Thanks minamimu. This camel coat is too lightweight for my winters, which is why I returned it. I already own two overcoats that are only warm enough to work into late fall, are not warm enough for my winters, and I don't want to add another one. I AM able to extend their seasons by wearing them over a light puffer vest or the new jacket shown here. What I really want is a coat that is warmer than this one.

Joy, thanks. I've never tried this sort of layering before but it seems like such a no-brainer now that I see how it can work. Yes it would be GREAT for travelling! I've done a fair amount of traveling to cities in winter and my go-to coat is a waterproof knee length coat with a hood and a removable quilted lining. It handles rain, cold, etc super well, although not the most stylish choice. I had one of those beaver coats too! My college roommate and I bought them for ourselves at a second hand store. They were 1940's vintage and incredibly warm but HUGE, and looked almost comical on two very petite girls. Great for two cash-poor college girls walking around on a campus in western Mass that was brutally cold in winter and often very windy. Sounds like your experience was similar. My grandmother had a more refined one - they were called the "poor women's fur coat".

Thanks Runcarla! Yeah that copper puffer is a great color for me. I've been looking for a sweater in this color too.

Thanks Shevia, Lynne, RobinF, Suz!

Rachylou that Fleurette one I posted is 100% wool. And $1000 US when not on sale.

Liesbeth - the nutmeg coat is just not warm enough for my winters. It's the weight of a boiled wool jacket. The knit sleeves are sweater-weight, and the wind blows right through them. However with the addition of this new puffer jacket I can definitely see wearing it more....except that I go almost nowhere these days!

Hi Viva! I'm actually from Mass, although we owned a summer place in Maine for 11 years. I do NOT mind being thought of as a Mainer :-) And yes, that's the issue, if a wool coat is warm enough it's very heavy. I had a more classic coat from LLBean a while back that was made from thick wool blend fabric AND had an added thinsulate lining, so it was warm but a bit heavy. I bought it at a thrift store, and ended up re-donating it because something about the red color just didn't appeal to me. They still make this style but without the thinsulate lining. .

OMG, the puffer is perfect on you!! Brava!! Really love that. Thanks for alerting us to this. I find a lightweight puffer is a real gift in my not as cold climate as well -- it's excellent for layering under raingear and lighter coats.

The MK looks really good on you, I think, but if the warmth factor is not there, it's a no go for sure.

It is hard to find a wool coat warm enough for deep winter. I stick with down for that. Love the copper colored puffy. It looks great with that coat and would be a nice warm combo.

Fellow Mainer here, and I've been trying to get a handle on my coat game recently. It's hard for me to find a wool coat that is really warm without being also incredibly heavy.

I also LOVE the copper puffer on you - what a gorgeous color! And it looks amazing under your nutmeg coat. Like Liesbeth, I think the arms are fab (and look warm!).

Good call on returning the MK coat. You look AMAZING in the copper puffer. The nutmeg coat is beautiful, and you should get it into regular rotation. Warm autumn colours really suit you. I think the light beige (MK coat) isn’t a good enough colour for you.

I love the way you can layer the puffer under other coats. I do this most often under trench coats when traveling. Often I pull the puffer’s hood to the outside so that it looks like a hoodie. Wool coats seem so heavy unless cashmere. Someday I might find the right one at the right price. When not traveling to cold places, I mostly wear the small puffer or a slightly lighter weight coat. I hate to have to carry a heavy coat when shopping.
The warmest (and heaviest) coat I ever had was a vintage beaver fur coat borrowed from the college drama department. It was perfect for walking a cold windy campus in winter.

Thankfully Mr Minu made me realise that it woulnd't have worked! Would the light weighted came coat worked for the winter in your location?

thank suntiger! I do have a black long coat and another in deep blue, that are warmer/heavier than this camel one.

Nemosmom, great idea about Aritzia. I was in their Boston store once last winter and really liked what I saw. As you said, great selection of warm winter coats. Lots of non-classic puffers too. I'm staying out of the city these days for mostly Covid reasons, but I should keep an eye on their web site for ideas and sales, and to check out the temp ratings.

lisa p yup, exactly!

jaileen, there are a few brands that make petite wool coats that would probably be warm enough for me. Fleurette is one of them. See find below. I've seen one in person once, and they are fairly heavy. 100% wool. just over $1000 full price. I guess that's what it costs to get a warm wool coat! I agree about puffers, and have a few. If I feel the need to buy another coat this year it will be a puffer.

Love the puffer! It looks GREAT with the nutmeg coat!!! And although I really love the color of the MK coat on you, the "cons" you listed just seem like too many strikes against it... If you don't think you would wear a camel coat this year, you have time to find a more suitable one that ticks more of your boxes.

Have you looked at Aritzia? I don't know if they have petites, but they do have shorter wool and wool blend coats, in many varieties of collar/lapel styles. And, they have temperature ratings for them in the description. I bought one at huge discount at the end of season sale last year. If you can identify a style of one there that works for you, you could always return it and keep an eye on the price...

I wish they would make just wool coats, not wool with all those fillers. Real wool coats are very hard to find, and probably not warm enough for you, anyway. My mother always had a wool coat, and wore it nearly year round in San Francisco.

Puffer coats of varying warmths are probably the way to go. Layering one under your other coat is smart. I bought that same Kenneth Cole coat, in grey, but returned it. Now I don’t remember why. That’s a great color on you.

Good coat review!
I agree that wool coats are tricky for getting the temp range right, and that wool blends and cheaper fabrications can cause the cost to lose the main luxurious qualities a wool coat could give.
I have same issue with big coat collars- I’m taller than you but have narrow shoulders and not very big head, so big collars overwhelm. I’ve culled such in years past and finally learned to stay away.
The puffer looks really good on you!

I thought I’d do a quick review of a couple of winter outerwear pieces. I need outerwear petite sizes probably 95% of the time to get the right proportions, so that means ordering online. I’m having a naturalista day WRT hair and makeup.

Michael Kors Overcoat.
I’ve been looking been looking for a classic wool winter-weight overcoat in camel or light brown for a few years.

Angie grabbed finds for the other colors, so I’m showing them too. It also comes in regular and plus sizes.. I'm wearing a PL.

The Pros: It fits well, is a style I love, and I love the dark camel color. It was on sale for $180 from a list price of $400. The length is just right for 5’1” me, and the sleeves are a tiny bit long which is what I prefer in winter coats.

The maybes: I've had coats before with this sized collar and am one the fence about whether the collar is way too big to be flattering on someone as short and short waisted as I am. I generally prefer a smaller collar but I still try ones like this.

The Cons: it’s too lightweight to work for my New England winters. I don’t expect wool coats to be as warm as puffers, but this coat would only work for me for the 8-12 weeks of transition seasons. I can’t justify adding other coat of this weight, especially not this year. It’s also got some minor quality issues. The fabric is wool/polyester/rayon/nylon/acrylic, and is a bit prone to wrinkles, although a good steaming might fix it. The belt has no interfacing (stiffener) and in my experience that can lead to permanent wrinkling. The buttons are that brilliant gold the MK brand is fond of, and feel very cheap, but would be very easy to replace. The collar looks like it can be buttoned up high, but it does not lie right when I do that, it’s a scrunchy mess. Back it goes, but it might work for someone else with milder winters.

This experience reminds me of why I don’t often shop for “wool” coats. It’s almost impossible to tell how thick the fabric is when looking online.

(LLBean is the only vendor I know of who sells petite wool coats and give temp ratings for them.). The selection in stores of petite sized overcoats is almost non-existent in my area so I can’t expect to find ones to try on in person. Also, I think a camel wool overcoat may have “expired” as an HEWI for me, in line with this posting by Angie from 2017: https://youlookfab.com/2017/09.....of-a-hewi/. Wool coats are not usually warm enough for the middle of my winters (unless they are very pricey), and are mostly a bit dressy for my casual lifestyle. For the upcoming Covid winter I probably won’t wear any of the ones I have, not even once. I have a few, they are classic styles and dark colors, and I don’t need to add one. Maybe someday.

Eddie Bauer Puffer Jacket

EB is one of the outdoor gear companies that carries petite sizes. I’m wearing PL. I wanted a lightweight puffer that would work on it’s own or as a layer under something else and this is perfect! It’s not marketed as “packable” but it certainly could be if you provided your own small pouch. The fabrication is called cirruslite down and it comes in other colors (including a plaid), a hooded version, and some other styles. It weighs almost nothing, is water repellant, and rated at -10F (light activity)/-23F (moderate activity). I got the color “copper”, which works with literally every other fall and winter coat I own. It's selling at $49 which is half the original price. I have scarves and hats that work well with it, and it adds another piece to my growing warm brown/earth tones collection. The find collector is not working so here is a link to the EB site:
http://www.eddiebauer.com/p/20612407/women's-cirruslite-down-jacket?sp=1&color=Copper ( this URL is not formatting properly when displayed, if you are interested in this jacket go to eddiebauer.com and search for "cirruslite down jacket". )

1 - MK Coat
2 - MK coat with top button closed
3+4 - EB puffer (this is close to the real color)
5+6 …same (color looks too dark due to lighting) worn under my nutmeg coat that I have not worn at all this year. The colors work and this could extend the wearing season quite a bit for the nutmeg coat, as long as I didn’t mind my arms looking a little like the Staypuft Marshmallow Man from Ghostbusters. (I love to use that reference because the guy who designed the character/costume and played him in the original movie is a high school friend of mine. )

Comments, suggestions, advice welcome as always! :-)
