Angie, will do.

Lisa, thank you and the best of luck to you, too.

Joy, sometimes there's too much to choose from and at other times I think I'm too picky. Balance can be a tricky thing. Thank you for your wisdom. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a few wild cards.

Grandfashionista, thank you for your suggestions, I'll check them out (and keep the warmest pair of gloves I can find).

Nice review! So hard to know what works well with shoes, we really can't know until we've walked around in them outside.

For gloves, I have a pair of Coach black leather gloves (purchased on eBay) lined in cashmere, with which I've been very happy. J. Crew also makes leather gloves lined in cashmere, but they're thinner.

Angie, you're right - why not, indeed. I'll try to assemble one capsule around a pair of shoes and see how it goes.

This is an excellent recap. I am not surprised those boots became instant workhorses, either. Gorgeous. As for the footwear mistakes -- ugh, shoes can be so difficult to get right! I, too, make my biggest errors with footwear, despite care and attention. Sometimes it's just impossible to know in advance.

Angie, thank you.
I'll try to keep my eyes and my mind open. Although I've narrowed down what I need, I haven't made any decisions about colours, styles and silhouettes yet, so the final look is still a mystery to me.
I hope to build two or three new capsules, which will be a big challenge. Luckily your ensemble posts are a really great help and inspiration for that.
Footwear is always a challenge, too. Sometimes I think I should buy shoes first and build a look around them afterwards, instead of trying to find the right pair of shoes for an outfit.

Joyce B, thank you. I hope I'm done with such basic mistakes.

Footwear can be hard to get right - I soooo get it. But you did well nonetheless Tisa, so well done. Sounds like 2017 is all worked out. Keep an open mind though. Wild cards can be the best thing to happen to your style.

It sounds like last year you did very well with your wardrobe.
I very much agree with what you said about both pairs of shoes as I have made exactly the same mistakes and have come to the same conclusions.

Thank you, ladies!
I wasn't sure if a post like this would even be interesting to anybody else. I really appreciate your comments and kind words.

Deb and Rachylou, I think writing this post really helped me better understand what's still missing from my wardrobe and what doesn't work.

Sterling, you're right. Even though I wasn't aware of it when making the list, the items are actually listed by priority.

Style Fan, I like my wish list, too, and hope some of it becomes reality .

Fabulous assessment. Having only two mis-steps in 2016 is great success and you learned a lesson that you will not repeat in the future. Win!

I like the list of items for 2017. Does the list imply prioritization?

I especially love the idea of a "wish list." Why didn't I think of that?

Some of you have written about your style journeys in 2016 and layed out plans for the future. With this post I'm trying to do the same.

All in all 2016 was a good year for my wardrobe and style growth. I have made 32 purchases, without counting underwear. They include a trench coat, 2 jackets, 2 skirts, 3 dresses, 3 pairs of trousers, 3 handbags, 5 pairs of shoes, 9 tops and some accessories.

I made two big mistakes, both when buying ballet flats.
A black pair turned out to be insanely uncomfortable. I bought them on holiday abroad when buying gifts for family, because I thought I had to buy something for myself, too. Lesson 1: If I want mementos, I'll take pictures. Easy, cheap, satisfying. No need to buy stuff just for the sake of it. Especially when I'm pressed for time.
My other mistake was relying on past experience with a certain brand and their flats. A few years back I owned a pair of white flats that were great. Last summer I've seen identical shoes in a store and bought them immediately. Big mistake. It turns out I should have tried them on a bit more carefully. Lesson 2: Just because two things look exactly the same on the outside (including the brand), doesn't mean they are exactly the same. Especially if they were made in different years.

I'm very happy with all other pieces. Some of them quickly became my favourites and major workhorses. Even better - I bought a lot of them during sales.
The absolute winners are: black knee-high boots, blue suede pumps and a tan trench coat. I suspect silvery-grey plaid trousers and ski trousers will end among the top picks as well, but I haven't had a chance to wear them yet. Pictures are below.

In 2017 I would like to fill my remaining wardrobe voids and develop a more cohesive and defined style.

First priority list for 2017:
- bottoms: jeans and trousers (including some in white and in black)
- tops: elegant and casual ones, in colours and in neutrals
- accessories: I have almost none
- shoes: elegant black leather booties, white or cream sneakers, leather summer sandals
- black leather gloves with warm underlining
- sports gear: ski gloves and ski jacket, swimwear, a wrap skirt
- some underwear, including white camisoles

I also have a wish list, which includes: a jacket in light or bright colour, an elegant summer dres, a summer hat, a small or medium sized white or cream handbag, nude pumps, elegant black leather high-heel boots (knee high), running shoes, a hoodie and maybe a pair of comfortable ballet flats. I'm always happy with a new skirt or a dress, a new backpack would be nice, too. But all those are just wishes that come second to the first priority list.

Thank you for reading and I hope every one of you has a satisfying and stylish year 2017!

*Edit: spelling.
