Ooh is the polished cotton waterproof?
Laughing at the faux fur confusion - so long as you don't wiggle it like it's alive, perhaps?

No worries on the coat not working out - hopefully someone else can enjoy it Here's hoping it gets returned in time though - the UK postal service is really struggling over the winter season & the related strikes!

Suz, I still have a trench like that. It may be London Fog. It is my dressy black coat and funeral coat, polished cotton. The lining makes it possible to stay warm for long services outside. . I am thinking of replacing it with something fuzzy and faux fur. Does anyone's pets think a faux fur is an animal and rip it to shreds

Zaeobi, that was a wonderful review. An orange coat brings brilliance to a dark day. I am sorry it did not work for you.

@suntiger
Maybe that's the key - blog but for free, lol! The inner of my 2-in-1 raincoat from Seasalt isn't quite as usable as a standalone coat in its own right, but it's enough for now.

@Dee
That's a good way to put it. It is indeed a 'whole lot of coat' - even in the petite length!

@Christina F
I think my puffer vest is *enough* for my climate too, so I hear you.
That's really something that NYC counts as subtropical now too - all I remember was the Rockefeller Center ice-skating rink & the cold metal on the subway trains!

@Angie
You're welcome :)
That's the frustrating part - it's the perfect colour (warm camel) & (collarless) cut too!

@jessikams
I totally understand - it's only been since 2015 for me (+ Brazil in 2013) but it's already a big thing for me too! I'm sure you'll be OK in the long run but do be prepared for some reverse culture shock when you return - I found myself chuckling at all the little ways I'd become 'less British' when I last visited.

We’re headed back to USA after 15 years of living all over Asia. I’m very excited but also sad to leave my adopted home, as I’m sure you understand. I’m sure it will be a very emotional transition.

Wow, great review. If I were in the market for a long puffer, I'd get one. But I have a bright red one, and one is enough for my subtropical climate in NYC (we do get very cold winters every few years, but our climate was reclassified as subtropical recently).

Excellent review, so thorough, but that’s whole lot of coat there, and sadly, too often the colours are never what we expect. Seems too fussy and bulky an option to me.

I prefer reality in my blogs personally! But they're paid to sell clothes, and aren't going to post the fails....
I like the idea of a double layer coat, but looks like this one is too fussy to be practical.

Thanks! You might just have a higher tolerance for the 'oversized puffy' look on me than I do, lol

@Star
Reason #99 why I could never be an 'influencer' - I'd want to record everything as close to reality as possible , which in turn would mean no one would read my blog lol (because we all like a *certain* amount of escapism in our media - aspirations sell!)

@Jessikams
Ooh where are you moving to? (Feel free to DM if you don't want to share it publicly - or don't, if you don't want to share at all, lol!)
I'm planning on moving back home in 2024 but am already dreading the logistics!

Crazy how different the oranges are in your pics compared to Nikki's. Hers are this deep vibrant orange which I fell in love with and yours show a light colour of a coat that I actually just donated for that reason! I look ghastly in that light colour. It is unfortunate if she is changing the colours with filters as one can get totally the wrong idea before ordering, although the Boden pic is a bit lighter. I do read Midlife Chic too and must say it did cross my mind that her pics are super bright and saturated.

@jussie
Yes it seems to be great quality! After trying it on & pulling it off multiple times, I then noticed one loose thread near the zip, but I don't think it would actually come undone. As fiddly as the buttons are, even those are sewn on well (the loops are elasticated).

@Suz
Haha thank you! I actually did blog my looks a little in the past, but I would draw my outfits (then add some closeup photos). I'm glad to see all my 'effective professional writing' teaching has paid off here too

I actually have a similar 2-in-1 raincoat from Seasalt Cornwall (of course, lol) but it's back home (in the UK) - it's waterproof & even has an interior pocket (for your phone etc)! Would highly recommend them if you're looking for thoughtfully designed but practical outerwear.

In the meanwhile though, I think I'm finally sorted for casual outerwear: I have a sleeveless long puffer, cropped bomber jacket & cropped leather jacket (all in dark brown). I'll look for a lighter sleeveless long belted topper (maybe linen) in the summer

OMG, Zaeobi -- what a FANTASTIC and detailed review. You really should be a blogger, light for photos notwithstanding!

What a gorgeous coat. It looks amazing on you! Though I get that it is not right for your current climate. Sigh. You are doing the right thing, sending it back.

Still. Honestly, I don't actually need a new puffer but if it were still available in navy I would be ordering it. This looks like Boden at their absolute best. Such care with the finishing and details and incredible worksmanship. Wow.

So, I can speak a bit to this two in one thing. It's possible that someone might choose one over the other -- I get that -- but back in the late 90s or early in the new century, I had a London Fog. two-fer. Admittedly, it wasn't a puffer coat - -it was a raincoat with quilted removable liner, both wearable on their own or together -- and I WORE THE HECK out of it. Yes, there was a bit of fiddling, but I sometimes did exactly what Zaeobi says and wore them together without doing up all the fastenings and there was never the slightest problem with it.

Thanks again for the review and pics. It's always great to see items in some detail like this.

Thanks for the great review, Zaeobi! I get that it isn't exactly the ideal item for your current climate, but my gosh it's cute!!

I didn't realize it was a two in one -- intriguing in terms of versatility but I have to wonder if most people would really just stick to one more or the other, given the complexities of the changeover.

As promised, here's my review of the Boden 'Longline Hooded Puffer Coat' in Orange - oops, I mean 'Fire Opal' ;)
https://www.boden.co.uk/en-gb/.....-u0093-ora (you may need to search the Boden USA/ other websites for your local stock)

BACKGROUND:
Spoiler: I will sadly be returning it (for the reasons listed at the very end). But it could look fab on the right person!

For anyone who missed it, this coat was featured on YLF by Nikki Garnett/ Midlifechic:
https://youlookfab.com/2022/11.....t-england/

---

REVIEW:
FIT
So I'm on the cusp of petite & regular height (5ft3.5, & yes that half inch counts!) & am pear shaped (I usually fit a UK12 on top/ UK14 below - though waist definition skews that). I ordered the UK14 petite.

COLOUR
First of all, I suspect Nikki was using a filter in her photo - it's a much lighter colour for me (apologies if my photos aren't great - we're finally getting 'winter' light here! The only full length mirror in my flat is the furthest from any windows - hence I'm not a blogger )

FEATURES
I feel Nikki did a better job of showing these off (with clearer photos!) in her blog post:
https://www.midlifechic.com/aw.....its-boden/

In addition, I want to highlight the:
~ 'double' pocket (slip on top/ flap top closure under);
~ double zippered *everything* (both the outer coat & inner coat's attachment to it);
~ the thumbholes - be aware it felt *slightly* tight on my hands when reaching for things, but I have average to slightly longer arms (for my height, that is) :P
~ soft lining of the outer pockets (feels silkier than fleece);
~ fully functional inner coat, with pockets (with a press stud closure!)
+ Care label at the end, if you need it

LOGISTICS
This is the part that gave me pause - as amazing as having two coats zippered together is, the inner coat is actually attached *inside out*, with tiny buttons in the outer coat's lining (I've highlighted it as best as I could, but essentially the inner coat attaches at 3 points of the outer coat's lining:
~ the nape (this was the easiest to detach, with the wide loop)
~ the hem (2 button loops on either side)
~ the sleeves (this was the trickiest - I've pulled it out for the photos but these button loops actually sit *inside* the sleeve tube. Closer to the cuff than the shoulder, but still! I had a hard time reattaching it, if I'm honest).

Technically you *could* get around this by wearing the inner coat without reattaching it to the outer one, but I suspect the lining would keep moving around if you did (so YMMV on how uncomfortable you'd find that - especially in deep winter!)

---
MAIN TAKEAWAY:
Hope this helps anyone else who's interested - I tried to be as thorough as possible!

I think this coat would be truly fabulous on someone who:
~ suits a lighter orange (or the navy blue, if it comes back in stock?);
~ doesn't need waist definition (i.e. you can rock the 'ambulatory blanket' look);
~ doesn't mind fiddly buttons (or plans to keep the two coats together/ separate for long periods of time, so it doesn't matter);
~ doesn't live in a subtropical climate (oops Think I let 'future' fantasy purchasing (for returning back home) get in the way of my *current* real life dressing needs this time!)

You get a cookie for reading this far
