Hangs head in shame. Pets 50/50 black leather, black suede, gray suede and blue suede. But then they are forever boots….I’m sure SW will eventually do white if only for the bridal collection. Hope springs eternal but he usually comes through.

Angie - yeah I’m right with you in the gap. I donated my sw hammer boots one of your top NAS picks because too loose. The SW 50/50 and reserve in suede are my holy grail but I’m too precious with them. Of course they still look new but they don’t get heavy wear. Because the lining is black the gap is more evident to me than visually distracting and wow they are comfortable. Only time will tell if it’s love or not but for the price im going to give them a go.
Zaeobi - they really need more diverse fit models!! I do love stretch panels on boots. SW is good for that. These do have stretch leather but you would have to try them. So difficult!!

Ahh I have the opposite issue (calves are right on the cusp of straight and plus sizes at 16") but still cannot find boots for my calf lol! Glad you found the right fit in Aquatalia - I'm sure they look great on you

@April Thanks for sharing Adelante - have you found the boots to be comfortable too? Or is it just a hard leather all around (where you would add your own orthotics/ insoles)?

Glad these worked out, and thanks for the review, Gryffin! I can imagine they look smashing over jeans :)

I have 13 inch calves and wear a US6.5 shoe and empathize! I have zero tolerance for calf-gaping on sleek boots (but slouchy boots gaping is fine). The only tall boots that fit sleekly over my calves without jeans is some type of stretch-leather boot - like my my navy Peter Kaisers. They cost a lot when I bought them in London, but seven years later and still going strong.

April, I've had tall boots custom-made by Poppy Barley to fit my narrow calves. They fit my calves, but were not comfortable. They hurt before I even started walking! I could not return them. I gave them away. Not a good experience unfortunately. Glad yours was better!

Irina - Thank you. I’ve over bought in years past. So boots were planned. The trench was my wild card not that I have not been looking but more for a more practical material. So I’m done now except waiting for the xs on sizing. But all practical.
Aquamarine - yes great brand and last for years. Spendy. But quality often is and sales are a gift.
Bijou - yes lovely and practical and most importantly comfy. I will report in when fall is under way, but I’m thinking because they are a little looser in the calf, ie not absolutely the perfect nothing could be better I must ration them, I’m hoping they will be happy work horses because they are great but just slightly imperfect. Anyway we will see if this is rationalization or a new approach to hard rotation footwear.
April - wow. No idea about this. I only knew about Ariat. Thanks so very much for the suggestion. I will check them out. So great you were able to order the perfect pair!!!

For anyone who loves boots but finds fitting them tricky, check out https://adelanteshoes.com/

Adelante lets you customize the fit and the design and then makes the footwear in accordance with your choices. I was able to get a pair of boots where the right is a half size bigger than the left, etc.

You'd think such customization would be hideously expensive but it was actually not.

Cocolion - SW would fit your calves well. Also if you want riding style boots Ariat you can order semi custom. Calf height width narrow or wide. Just a thought.

Thank you for providing so much detail in your review. You are helping me avoid wasted time ordering these. I have wide feet, high insteps, narrow heels and narrow calves and this combination does not seem to exist in tall boots. I keep looking and hoping, this is definitely my HEWI.

Janet - thanks so much from one boot girl to another!!!
Suz - those are gorgeous! I have the aquatalia below which got hard wear. But they are 7’s and a little snug with my orthotics. I’m probably going to stretch them. I was all about knee boots for years but have been off them since the pandemic. But now I’m feeling them again. Yes with enough wear they lose the integrity and you can’t blame the zippers but in general really awesome and hard working!!

They sound great for you. They fit in with your equestrian style and (occasional) western touches (i.e. belts). I still have a pair of Aquatalias I bought at the sale some years ago. I have not worn them much in the past three years but got a lot of wear from them the first two years and know I will revive them at some point. Like you, I go up about a half size in Aquatalias (I'm a 37 or 6.5/7 and always go for the 7 in the Aquatalias). Mine are almond toed, so very simple and classic. Mine do have an elastic panel on the back which has been surprisingly durable. I found mine extremely true to waterproofness as long as you don't get water in the zipper -- but no boot can be waterproof at that point. In any event, they took me through rain, slush, and snow (though not on the coldest days) and have proved their paces.

I have been looking for a waterproof leather knee boot for the last year. I have many SW OTK 50/50 boots black leather, suede and SW knee boots in black suede but they are not waterproof and being practically worshiped I don’t wear them at the nearest hint of wet weather. I have low volume size 7/37 feet with 12.5 calves and need to have room for a 3/4 orthotic. I do well with SW, Blondo, Ariat, EF boots in a 7. Aquatalia and Frye I often need 1/2 size up. Because of cost this is often a sale only item. $595 for well almost anything would be off the table. Although it took several days to shop boots launched last night and just arrived and are not even marked delivered. This is a full leather boot it listed something about a stretch panel but it’s more stretch leather no elastic. The foot is very comfortable. Aquatalia usually runs small for me across the forefoot so the 7.5 has a little room in length and width but with no slippage at all. Heel is marked 1.75” which was a small concern because I can’t wear heels any more. It felt like less. Very comfortable and secure. The shaft is wider than expected. I can slip my fingers in with ease although it looks neat on the leg. I’m not sure that’s going to be a deal breaker because all my other boots are very fitted because of the cut and although I’ve wanted to try boots over skinny jeans I haven’t done it for fear of permanently stretching out the calf. As these boots have a full zipper that would make them perfect to play with this look. Also the toe is squared off Spanish riding boots style. I thought I might not like that but it’s a graceful toe box and it doesn’t bother me. The quality is your typical gorgeous aquatalia. Heel is sturdy but hard, not a soft rubber. Decent traction rubber sole up front. I tried them with leggings. Im going to put them in over jeans. See how the calf fits but my first impression is no way going back into the box. If you have wider calves these could be your dream boot, or if you are looking to tuck or if a little gap won’t bother you with a legging or tights. I do find mort people wear their shafts and they are shown with some ease. Because I wear typically leggings and tights I like narrow very fitted shafts (hence the sw 50/50 ilk). But I’m crushing on these. Very simple, very elegant, waterproof and comfortable. Classic and timeless.
ETA : just tried them over madewell 9” skinnies. There’s plenty of room so I’m not stretching the shaft but you don’t notice any gap and easy peasy with the zipper. I might just get thicker black boot socks for the leggings. Also I think it will make me less precious about them because a 14” shaft is findable a fitted 12.5” is a hewi. So love ‘em, box getting dumped and boot shapers in. Hum maybe it will cool down to 80 and I can pretend it’s fall…

Update - I decided to try the 7M. That’s my usual size except most aquatalia I take 7.5. I have low volume flat feet but need a 3/4 orthotic which takes up significant room. The 7 arrived and the length is fine. There is some slight snugness mid foot left. No discomfort but the shaft is significantly smaller. Some room at the top but the leg is a much better fit. Still room for a skinny Jean looked good with leggings. I was surprised that there was that much change. So I’m keeping the 7. I do have a boot stretch and spray if I want a little more ease across the mid foot. But they will probably also ease with mild wear. We are taking maybe 2 mm stretch. So definitely don’t size up and if in between you might need your smaller size.
