Thanks for you thoughts, ladies. Diana, those visuals are GREAT. I think this is something that I really need to start paying more attention to.

I definitely have sloping shoulders. Even professionally fitted bras fall off my shoulders. Swimsuits I only do racerback or halter necks. I actually like boat necks on me.

I have sloping shoulders, although it is less pronounced now that I have been trying to do some exercises to strengthen my shoulder muscles. I also have a short neck and bad posture which both exacerbate the sloping shoulder thing.

I prefer jackets and tops with strong shoulder lines - I LOVE high cap sleeves, puffy shoulders, and slight shoulder pads even though they don't generally get much love here. Not like huge 80's shoulder pads, just a slight lift works wonders for my shoulder line. The trick with cap or puff sleeves is that the extra volume has to be on top of your shoulder rather than on the side of your arm if that makes sense. You want to add vertical height to your shoulder, not width. A wider neckline helps a lot too - for example a tank with wider set straps is better than a halter or racerback style. Boat necks don't work for me because of my short neck but they do work to straighten the shoulder line because of the strong horizontal line.

Things that are not as flattering to sloping shoulders are raglan sleeves, close-set skinny straps, halters, racerbacks, dolmans, although there are exceptions to all of these. It's just a lot more work to make them work.

Photos 1-3 are various things with shoulder-strengthening properties on me. Photo 4 is more what my shoulders actually look like. You can see they appear more sloping in that photo than in the first 3. You can also see that I am wider across the upper arm/chest than across the shoulder.

Hi, Sarah -

Well, you may have sloping shoulders, but you look great!!

Seriously, in that top, at least, they do appear to be sloping. Mine are quite square so I have the opposite situation going on, and not much advice to offer. But I would think that structured tops (when you can find them to fit) would give you a squarer line, if that is the look you are after. Fortunately, in your case, your hips are not especially wide, so there is less worry about imbalance due to the slope.

I have a good friend whose shoulders slope. Her bust is much larger than my (almost nonexistent) bust. But even so, I need my tops larger than hers to accommodate my squarer shoulders. She sometimes sends me things of hers that she is no longer wearing; I find I often have to donate the tops.

I have them, or rather, large trapezius muscles, which makes for the same visual anyway. I believe it was Meredith (?) who mentioned blazer collars being either pointy or round echoing the shoulder line. So we sloped shoulders should not wear rounded collared blazers, but rather pointier ones to offset the sloping. Beyond that, all I can think of is racerback tops sometimes fit me oddly on the neck, but that's more to do with my bigger neck muscles than the shoulders themselves, I think.

I think you might be right, Sarah - they do look sloping down from the neck.
I am not sure if my shoulders are sloping or not - I always thought them being broad and square but now I am not sure either...no advice here, sorry

After failing to fit into some non-petite NAS jackets and reading Angie's blog post about dropped shoulder seams, I'm wondering if I have "sloping" shoulders, which would explain why my bra straps are always falling down, why I can't buy jackets in regular sizing, and why I sometimes feel strange-looking in boat necks. But I'm wondering what other style implications having sloping shoulders might have.

Do any of you have sloping shoulders? How do you adjust your style because of them?
