What a fab realization! Footwear can really be a danger zone, can't it? It's so hard to be rational in the heat of the moment, but you did it!

This is where thrifting/consignment shopping is ideal. I love the look of towering platform pumps, but they just aren't practical to walk and stand in for very long. Then I found a pair in black suede platforms, looked like never been worn, on consignment for a song, and they earned a spot in my closet. Even if the reality is I will probably only wear them a few times a year -- to formal events that involve a lot of sitting.

Denise, I totally agree! I have several items that I've bought at different times that were a bit of an indulgence, but were right enough that they made themselves keepers. I have a lovely Ted Baker jacket that I bought on impulse with no rational need for, but which I wore into the ground, so I know that they are out there. Thank you for playing devil's advocate. Balance will be my mantra!

I think that at the end of the day what made these a no-go was that when I started making the calculation, I could list two reasons to keep them (Pretty! Make me feel cool!) and I could list many, many more reasons why they wouldn't work, the most important of which was that they were just too darned high and I really began to wonder if the back of them was so curved that they would give me blisters. I will keep what you said in mind, though. I definitely don't want to miss the occasional leap the brings me something fantastic. Sometimes you have to trust that you can make your imaginary lifestyle work for you, at least occasionally!

I can relate as I think everyone here can too! Good job parting with something that doesn't suit your lifestyle.

Now, I'm going to play devils advocate. Last year I purchased, then returned a beautiful pair of Italian-made burgundy leather booties from LD Tuttle. They had the perfect heel height and fit beautifully. The problem is they had a very fragile tie at the back that didn't fit my lifestyle at all. However, I still think about those booties because I want them. I regret returning them. If you really love something, you have to make it yours. Not very often, but every once in a while, I believe it's OK to indulge yourself this way.

It must feel great knowing the difference between your real and imaginary lives. I never thought about it in those terms. Months after buying something I'll just realize it didn't work out. And by then I usully can't return it.

So glad you were able to return them. I sometimes get almost obsessed over some item I think I *must* have. I think I forget to really rationalize the "who, what, when, where" thing: Who am I really?, What will I wear it for?, When will I wear it? and Where will I wear it? I've gotten much better over the past year and also thank YLF for this.

They are very attractive shoes but the heel is too high. I use to think I should learn to walk in high heels but after YLF I think my shoes should work for me. Shoes should be a slave to me rather than the other way around. I think you made a good decision. I've also learned to appreciate some things on other people when they don't work for me.

I feel like I took a real step forward today. I'd bought these shoes about a month ago. I was in love with the style. I'd tried them on earlier, at nearly full price, and almost bought them. Then I'd gone back and they were gone. I kept thinking about them. Then I found them when I was visiting a friend out of state and they were 70% off. I grabbed them without a thought. Everyone on the forum loved them. All around hooray!

But then as the elation faded, I started really thinking about what to wear them with. Several things came to mind, but I never broke them out. Yesterday I realized it was because I was buying for an imaginary lifestyle.

I love how caged heels look on others here on the forum. I long for how they make every simple outfit look super cool. I love their edginess. But... They are a weekend shoe, not a work shoe for me. I have two little kids to chase around. The heel is too high. I could wear them for a date night, but they aren't really my core style, so I doubt I'll get the wear over time that I need for them. They'd never be my go-to. And I live in Portland, Oregon, so I could only wear them in the summer. All this came crashing home and I realized that they had to go back.

So I'm celebrating! I'm really glad that I realized what I was doing while I could still return them. Yeah forum and Angie for this perspective!
