*nodding*, longer length dresses are still quite hard to find. COS is always worth a look too, as they often have interesting (sweater) dresses in various lengths.
http://www.cosstores.com/us/Women/Dresses

I bought the Calvin Klein dress Angie has in her post and love it. Might be worth a go?

I love sweater dresses and own several. I think stores like JJill and Talbots tend to have longer ones because of their target age range. When I buy from stores like Old Navy and Gap, I buy on-line and purchase tall sizes for the added length.

I'm not sure how tall you are? I purchased this dress to have a non-body con option. Equipment may or may not work well for you, but I found it to work without having being overly loose or tight. It's on sale which is nice because Equipment is expensive!

ETA: It looks like Nordstrom is sold out. I didn't check the Equipment website.

I am not sure about the difference between a knit dress and a sweater dress. In Australia we don't use the term sweater dress (or "sweater" for that matter). But I do love knit dresses and also like them to be at least 38 inches long (40 is ideal), so I thought I would respond.

I recently bought a dark green knit dress from ASOS (first find). The brand is called Selected. It is summer here so I wont be wearing it for a while but it ticks a lot of boxes for me - loose, dark green, knee length, fine and short sleeved (fine and short sleeved will make it much more wearable in my mild climate). It is like a cool weather T shirt dress. I love it! They have it in grey also (second find).

I have also had success in the past with UK brand Whistles. I love the asymmetrical navy knit dress shown in the third find. (But I really mustn't buy it because I wont get enough wear out of it!)

ETA I don't think my green dress is a sweater dress within the meaning of Angie's post. It has a hem and could be hemmed up further. It is more a stretchy fine knit dress. But still nice

Here are a couple of finds from J.Jill. They are knit dresses, though not sweater dresses per se. But they could be worn similarly. A forum member has a knit dress by J.Jill that I really liked on her, and it may have been the ponte one below, or one like it. (It was a post by the "tub-balancer" --can't remember her actual screen name!)

Unfrumped, I really liked this dress and posted about it today: http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....-for-pears

I don't know whether it's the style you're looking for, but it's fitted but not too body con because of the way it's cut and the substantial thickness of the knit. The length was knee-length on 5 ft 3 me, not too short at all--perfectly decent without tights.

Loved Firecracker's new dress post and I found this prior blog post by Angie that summed up the HEWI-hunt.
Unfortunately it's still true! I think there has been some shift in lengths to a bit longer, but still hard to come by.
I measured once, but I think I need at least 38" length and maybe a smidge more--and that's even with tights. Whatever it is, there is a specific sweet spot that is "elegantly energetic", whereas too short and I feel I look juvenile (even if not indecent, with tights anyway), yet too long or midi-length either look droopy or demand more from footwear and proportions.
I was re-reminded and inspired to keep looking at the boxier shapes. These can be tricky if too shapeless, but many typical sweater dresses are way too body-con. Have had some luck with empire or styles that have tucking on top and flare out, but again, so often are still short.

Has anyone found a particular brand or style this year that ticks all the boxes for you?
