Wow, great job! I totally understand the feeling of reuniting with an old favorite. I am extreme in my archiving behavior but I do think there is a value in putting aside and revisiting favorites that you get tired from.

Sorting all your clothes, etc. is a big job! Well done, and with a perk. Summer clothes can be hard, so rediscovering a complement of items to add back is a bonus for sure.

Though all my stuff is out all the time (with the exception of out of season outerwear) I find having everything documented in Finds (or some other type of app) is useful for remembering inventory.

Exciting to see these again - and well done on a project (it really can be out of sight, out of mind!)

I use a holding zone for three reasons:

1) Out of season - our wardrobe and storage don't work for all my clothes to be out all the time and putting them away works for me. This is 80% of the zone.
2) Pieces I like but don't feel like wearing - either just sick of, or mostly a but off my current style preferences. About six things I think.
3) Fit issues - I think it can be wise to keep things that you genuinely like but don't currently fit. I do think putting them out of the current wardrobe is a good idea. I don't think I have anything in this category at the moment (outside my nostalgia zone of teenage, and twenties pieces and bridesmaid dresses.....which I am slowly tackling).

Sarah - I was in the same boat. Some things I said goodbye to will never fit again for perfectly good reasons: because I have a lot more muscle mass in my upper body and shoulders than I did ten years ago, or because a pair of shoes were never ever very comfortable. Some of the things fit *differently* than I've come to prefer: the slim and shrunken looks of the 2000s and early 2010s. But it's also true that my weight fluctuated some over the pandemic and that it's stabilized back to normal, so some of the things that were out of circulation came back in. It's good to see them again, and a lesson to be patient!

WOW, well done!
I have been going through a similar process. In fact I am wearing a resurrected item (cropped jeans) today.

I love your set of questions and I think I'll adopt them going forward (I still have some sorting to do).

I agree with what you say about how the holding zone can revive our relationships with clothing, and about not being overly quick to purge. This is a little bit dicey/sensitive but I'll put it out there. I have lost some weight over the past year so I have resurrected some items that were in the holding zone because they were too small. In fact I slightly overshot my weight loss goal so I am resurrecting a few items that I REALLY didn't think I would ever be able to wear again (I had intended to sell them but never got around to it). People often give the advice to get rid of too-small clothes because if you ever do lose weight you will want something new. But honestly, I'm really glad to have these things! I still like them and I'm really happy not to have to source them again. Others' MMV but my style is not particularly trendy and my preferences evolve only slowly over time, so the failure to purge is working for me. I think those two principles in the sentence above would apply to holding zones broadly, not just to clothing set aside because of size issues. Apologies if this doesn't sit well, I will delete it if so.

That sounds very satisfying! I am feeling the need to do the same, too many items in my closet that I don't wear and need to re-evaluate. We have had a very busy spring and summer so far but maybe things will slow down a little bit and I'll get to it.

Since we moved into our new house (with an unfinished basement) in 2020, I've kept a large number of clothes there in "backstock": they were things I didn't love, didn't fit, had grown tired of, had worn out, or wasn't sure about giving up.

I am good about keeping my own mid-sized closet up-to-date, but bad about sorting things that end up in the basement. Store it and forget it! Leave that for four years and you end up with a big pile.

We need to have our foundation repointed at some point this year, which means clearing out the clutter. A good kick in the (unworn) pants to dig through the mess!

Yesterday, I hauled any number of boxes, shopping bags, and totes up to the main floor and sorted through EVERY SINGLE PIECE. Given that I just did a seasonal review of my upstairs closet, this means that I've had hands on every single item of clothing in my possession in the last month. I don't think that's something I have been able to say in YEARS. Though I'm not a minimalist, they are certainly onto something: knowing exactly what you have and why you have it feels amazing.

As I sorted, I wasn't trying to purge. I was just trying to evaluate:

- Does it fit?
- Is it in good shape?
- Is it in my palette?
- Could someone else use it?
- Is it valuable?

I did end up setting aside the majority of pieces for donation (mostly for fit issues), as well as a bag for recycling and a dozen or so pieces for consignment. The rest — I would say about 1/5? — are already back in my closet (or in the laundry on the way there). Many of them are summer pieces, which is exciting. And some of them feel like long-lost friends that I'm SO HAPPY to be reunited with. I nearly cried with joy when I pulled on the super comfy and still chic Saint and Sophia lounge pants that were an Angie recommendation years ago and that I needed a break from after wearing them constantly during lockdown... A lesson there about using the holding zone to revive our relationships with our clothing and about not being too quick to purge.

After this big cull, there are only a handful of pieces left in my entire wardrobe that pre-date my time of YLF. It's amazing how this project feels tied up with the support of this community and Angie most of all.

So, THANKS for being a wonderful place on the internet, and if you've gotten this far, thanks for reading!
