BJ -- I really love that Sam Edelman tote-- I did order a backpack, but if I hate it I will check it out next.

The suitcase is staying. I love it -- my one concern is the fact that my personal item is usually a small backpack on a plane, but the ergonomics are worth it on a regular basis.

I ordered the backpack suggested above for days that I have both laptop and camera. If everything fits well I think it will be great since it locks and will lighten the weight. I will get a wristlet to carry in it. It would make a great city camera bag/travel bag. In the summer I will switch to something smaller. Not glamorous, but it would let me carry my camera more often.

What do we think of this wristlet?

scratchy fabric in the tote will pill and unevenly wear tops/jackets, or anything it rubs against during daily wear. i would also think about the colors in your wardrobe especially as you are still expanding it and choose a tote color that would play well. iirc, this green may not be it. overall, i vote return.

i know you are price sensitive...how about these at zappos...all under $100

i like the pockets in the under armor , the camo pattern in the sam edelman, the vera bradley has oodles of room. the nine west is more formal but may give you that "i;m out of college" vibe. and that's just the first page!

Basically, I like the new suitcase but it seems big because it is flatter and wider rather than taller and longer like my duffle and because it honestly is a bit better organization of space. During the summer, spring and fall and maybe during plane travel I would appreciate the fact that the laptop and camera will fit really well.

I do have a small gym-sized bag that I I could use as an overnight bag (1-2 changes of clothes, no laptop).

What to carry as a daily bag especially in the winter is an ongoing dilemma for me because of the freezing issue (i.e. not being able to leave the laptop, camera, my moisturizer and makeup in the car on Saturdays and Tuesdays). If I wasn't going back and forth, I would probably go the wallet/wrislet or clutch or small x-body thrown into an open tote that could occasionally house shoes, lunch, camera bag, gloves etc. With the need to carry the extra stuff inside at least 2 days a week (and possibly toiletries that can't freeze everyday in case of snow) I'm not sure.

It sounds to me like maybe the backpack could work, especially if you can attach the shoulder strap from the other bag. The purple seems like a good color that will make it feel a little less utilitarian while still going with a lot, too.

In terms of having a place for lingerie/toiletries, could you use a packing cube or something similar? I have a few of these in different sizes and really like them when I'm packing to keep small stuff together.

According to my occupational therapist, only one bag is tolerable for the back:
http://www.backtpack.com/index.php
My response, "Nope."

So when I have comparatively little to carry (iPad, DSLR), I carry a fieldbag or tote on one shoulder, and support the weight with my hand. Laptop only, a vertical cross body made for it. Camera and laptop or extra lenses, I turn to my monster backpack.

Other than being sure all these bags are somber (black or grey) and coordinate with my luggage, I've entirely sacrificed appearance for function. I would love to know what you finally settle on.

So, as result of the packing thread 2 weeks ago I ordered this suitcase in the purple color. It came in Monday. I also ordered this tote in black as a possible solution to the work bag quandary.

1. the suitcase wasn't exactly what I was expecting. When it said convertible I thought it meant backpack to shoulder bag. Actually, it is a backpack that you can hide the straps on . . . which leaves you with the two small hand carry handles as options. The quality seems really good for the price (I paid between 20-30 dollars less than current website list price) the color is gorgeous, etc. My laptop fits in the front zip down pocket (although that limits what else you put in there) in the zipped mesh compartment inside the main bag, in the main bag, or in the backpack strap pocket on the back. While it doesn't have a shoulder strap, I think I could use one from an old bag and attach it to the webbing and backpack strap attachment points. It is similar size to my old duffel, but fits more items and fits domestic carryon regs on all airlines which the duffel did not. The bag itself is super comfortable as a backpack, even with only one strap over my shoulder. My only other concern is having dedicated pockets for underthings and toiletries if I have the laptop in the bag as well.

2. The tote. The tote quality was dissappointing after looking at the E.Bags nylon. It seems almost see-through, but strong. The material is also sort of scratchy, and the tote handles are fairly long, but probably not long enough to get over a shoulder with a coat comfortably. It is rather big width-wise, but not particularly deep width wise which means that likely the laptop/camera would fit or the laptop/lunch or laptop/shoes would fit but not a combo of the 3. Straps make computer feel very heavy on shoulder.

I'm wondering if I need to rethink my position on a backpack? I think would hate something that looked like a backpack instead of like a little daypack -- I have enough ppl mistake me for a college student as is. The plus of a backpack would mean I could probably start carrying my DSLR on a daily basis, which would be great for shooting more, but IDK about great for my back : )

Any insight?
