A timely post for me , as my fav bra was ruined last week! I was lamenting the cost of a replacement, but you are right, foundations are key.
I wonder if a puffer might come your way in the post Christmas sales?

It's so nice to have people who understand the value of the basics. I know $200 on a bra sounds utterly insane to some people, but once you make the switch to top quality breast support you'll never, ever go back. And the feeling of discovering a brand that feels like it used you as a fit model is really not one I can do justice to. You know how it is when you find perfect jeans? Multiply by at least 10 and you're close.
That said, I'm lusting after those Munro Linda boots more than ever. :p Especially after spending four hours on my feet at a show last night in nearly three-inch heels. :p
Your reply

In recent years, this year especially, I've put the most $ in my footwear. If my feet hurt, my entire body hurts. I've worked on buying key outerwear pieces this year as well, primarily because I don't want to freeze this winter. I can forego more tops, pants, etc. until I really and truly need to buy more. I see a lot of things I want, but sticking to a budget is more important.

Thank you for posting this, Michelle. Years ago I flipped through a book from a sales display about beauty in aging, and the author made the point that women look best when they're financially secure. Sometimes I think of all the buying I see going on and wonder how much joy it's really bringing, vs. future comfort it could have contributed to.

And I've been there, putting good money into a bra while making the choice to skimp on footwear and outerwear in a cold, wet climate. Technically I could have spent the money, but exchange rates at the time were prohibitive. Maybe if I'd spent less in my 20s on facial treatments, cosmetic injections and instead saved/invested that money, I wouldn't have felt the need to be so miserly about the exchange rates and bank wiring fees.

When money got easier, guess what my next purchase was: another bra, and three different styles of matching panties. Then footwear. Outerwear I'm still working on. Not because of budget, but other things.

I completely understand. I went through a big unintentional. Funny because I was unhappy with my tummy before & would have loved to lose it there. I did lose it there but much more everywhere else. I had to replace almost everything. Fortunately a lot of jackets & jeans are still wearable. They are now fluid & relaxed fit versions lol.

I did especially need new bras with the weight loss. I too need expensive bras. I wish they would last longer. The elastic stretches out after first few wears & I don't over wear them, do hand wash with lingerie soap & hang dry. It helps but not enough.

I don't have the coat & boot needs that you would have living where you do so I can't say what you should do but it seems like you know you could get away without those. I do have tall casual black boots that I would have loved to replace this Autumn, with a less chunky pair but held off. I would also love a more modern coat silhouette but skipped that too.

Really good analysis, Michelle. Put the most into things that you wear every day and that "elevate" ( ) your outfits.

In line with that, I'm really trying to remember to give due attention to all the "life areas", not only clothing capsules but hair care, skin, exercise, and relationships. It's very easy to let these go and build up a wardrobe area and then not look or feel as good as one might if all the "basics" were attended to. Sometimes they're not as fun and I'm interested in how to stay motivated.

I think you made a good decision. I know in my case, my small budget is the (unspoken) main component of my style. We all have to do the best we can with what we have. You will enjoy the lift those bras provide every single day, and it's not likely you would have received them for Christmas gifts, lol! Here's hoping there's a puffer or some boots under the tree for you.

Good plan Michelle! I tend to put all of my real spending money towards shoes because I have very fussy feet and walk a lot and basically had to rebuild my shoe wardrobe from scratch after getting diagnosed w rheumatoid arthritis in 2012. Add in a commitment to ethical companies, a desire for good quality so I don't contribute to landfills, and not wearing black, and shoes don't come cheap! Thank goodness I can get most of my closet secondhand. Luckily I think I've finally created a sustainable shoe capsule, so now I can put that money towards other things. I'm definitely eyeing my underwear drawer (about the only area of wardrobe that I always buy retail), so this was a good reminder to get back to those basics! Also, if I go by the cost per wear philosophy, I should spend more on my underwear than anything else!

Thanks for the validation, guys. And for those concerned that I'm going to freeze my way through our dominant season in the name of boob support, don't worry - I've already purchased a new wool coat, which I personally wear far more often than a puffer anyway. I run extremely warm, as I said. I.e. my cape or a leather jacket is perfect at 0 degrees Celsius for me. Last year's polar conditions reinforced why a puffer is so helpful to have in the closet, but I'm choosing to be optimistic and think that winter was an anomaly. As for footwear, I have my two pairs of Robyns and a more utilitarian pair of lug-soled ones for when the real snow comes. They're not ideal, but that's the ultimate first-world problem - I'll be just fine. :)
Your reply

I'm pretty much in the same boat. I've spent the bulk of my clothing budget on basics this year, and it's been expensive. However, I don't regret any buying decision I've made because I know those pieces will be repeatedly used and result in a low CPW. It's $ well spent. And yes, I spent a decent amount of $ on bras, as they are the foundation for everything that goes on top.

That said, I've had to come to terms with the fact that I have a limited budget and can't get many of the "fun" things I so desperately would love to have. Maybe next year after I have more discretionary income to spare...

I find it so, so helpful to read a post like this. It is such a reality check for me, as I can be easily swayed by all the shopping-related posts. Oh, I need that! Must try this! Must have that! The fact is, even though I have a clothing budget, I don't treat it as seriously as I should, and other things have happened that really should make me tighten my belt ... like my car very unexpectedly dying, or close to it.

Michelle, I so appreciate your candor (and your wit, and your writing ability!). Of course you are right, and especially in this case. Tim Gunn would agree that undergarments are THE foundation to good style. Spend there, the rest will come, as it will.

Michelle! I love Empriente too. Nothing else will do. I know it doesn't help now, but Bare Necessities has a twice yearly (I think) 25% off Friends and Family sale that includes Empriente. It's still not the deal if the century with the duty charges but there is some savings. I have never seen them on sale anywhere else. I think the next sale is in March.

Good thinking to do the foundation first. If the bra isn't right, then nothing you put on top of it is either. Financial stress undermines any pleasure in purchases and I agree that it is not worth the angst.

As long as you have a way to be warm and dry throughout the Canadian winter, your approach makes good sense to me. We all have aspects of our lives that allow for much skimping, skipping or compromise. A well-fitting bra isn't one of them.

Yes you are making the right call. Socks, panties, bras, thermals are the most important pieces we own. I assume you have a coat that you can wear of some sort...your time will come for replacement.

I think that you are being very wise not to over spend, Michelle. I looked at what I have for fall/winter and really should work at replacing much of it, but in reality, I can get by for at least another year. I hope to take my time and go slowly. Sarah's word "curate" is a great way to think about it. The money I can save will help us spend more time with a first grandson when he arrives probably later this month.
I agree that a well fitting bra should be a priority as long as you can stay well and warm enough in the cold.

Sometimes you have to go back to basics.
Do you have a pair of boots that will do for now? It is impossible to replace everything at once. A good bra is necessary in order to look our best in the clothes we purchase. You have made a sound decision.

You are completely correct in your thinking Michelle-- however, I will tell you the secret other ladies on the forum passed onto me when I was lamenting the expense of bras. If I've changed sizes or haven't gone for a fitting in a while I will go for one and buy one bra from the fitter--- then I will buy the exact style numbers and sizes I want from ebay for 1/3 of the price. My favorite bras are ones that come out season after season, so I have had lots of luck. This past year I bought 4 of my normal bras for the price of one. I wear Chantelle and Marie Jo bras, not empreinte, but not cheap either.

Michelle, this is a very tough decision to make, but you are wise. Angie's words are ringing in my head. Start with your foundation: Get a bra fitting, and refresh your hair and specs before upgrading anything else.

Bras are, indeed, crazy expensive. But worth it, for all the reasons you say.

I am hoping that perhaps some Christmas money may find its way to you so you can at least buy the new booties in addition to the bra.

When I joined YLF my budget was really limited, and I needed literally everything. So I did exactly what you are doing. I spent money on bras first (in the spring) and on winter coats (in the fall). And a new haircut. I bought most of my other clothing at discount or on consignment or thrift. It made for some less than fab outfits, but also allowed me to experiment and take more risks at a lower cost.

When my employment situation changed, I had more purchasing ability, and this has made things easier for the time being. But there are always times when something else is a more important priority than clothing. Like fixing the hole in our roof....or buying a new hot water tank...to take just two recent examples that quashed some closet dreams I had going on there....

100 percent agree! Firstly - can you BELIEVE how much bras are!?! It's highway robbery! Nobody even see's them (unless of course you're Mondona). I too am having to start all over with my closet. For some inexplicable reason, I just quit being interesting in clothing and fashion and getting dress (haha - ok, I did get dressed) but I didn't keep up with the times. All the sudden I need to replenish my worn out clothes and the store don't have them anymore - everything is oversized tops, skinny bottoms....basically complete opposite of what I was wearing. Long story... I had to start from scratch. I'm finding, it's A LOT of work. I'm trying to figure out my Capsule wardrobe (Capsule - this is a new term for me - who came up with THAT). I'm monitoring sales and returning like I've never returned before. I also have decided to just focus on the basics and wardrobe building. I like the term "curating". Whenever I purchase a new item - I think - is this "curating" my wardrobe. To me, it means that it will last more than one season. Hmmmm.....maybe that won't apply to bras.

I agree… and I desperately need to get into the same mindset… it's so hard with all the temptation, especially as the seasons change and we want new things…

You're being very wise here… I need to follow in your footsteps.
