You might make an online to do list You probably know what motivates you best. Figure out a way to use that. You could set up an award system for each step you take to reach a goal or maybe competition is your motivator or being held reponsible. Work it.

BD, this thread is about me having difficulty functioning in some basic and very necessary parts of life. Not having the wherewithal to deal with them means that I certainly don't have energy left over to squabble with people online. Feel free to message Lisa to ask what she said. I'm not deleting my post defending the trainer because that leaves people wondering what was said, which isn't fair.

I plan to message people who made suggestions here, and start a new thread that I hope will remain positive. I don't expect to be back on this thread other than to look up the many suggestions and click the links to write to each person.

Fashintern, I found what you wrote about your December brave and honest.
I missed Lisa's original post but believe her apology. To me the tone of your response to her was a bit (or more) harsh and attacking-again I have no idea about Lisa's now deleted post, but perhaps your response could also be deleted?

Fash: I wonder if doing some voluntary work of some kind might help? I have done this in the past, and eventually it did lead to a paid position. Obviously it’s good to make sure it’s something you love doing though because you’ll be working for free. Maybe there’s some way you can use your English teaching skills for that? Perhaps helping new refugees?
Also, if you like animals I know there are agencies you can work for who pay you to have people’s pet at your home whilst they’re away on holiday.
Also you may be able to join a housecleaning agency and pick up some casual cleaning work to keep you going.
Best of luck, you have my empathy, I’ve been searching for permanent work for a couple of months with no luck. Thank gosh I have some casual work to tide me over.

Lisa, what's the purpose in writing that? Surely you understand the difference between having enough to get by for now and not needing to work. As for the rest....I don't see what benefit arguing with you would have, although I will absolutely defend Cori and her very thorough knowledge, which comes from many types of achievements. You must not have absorbed anything from her site at all, given your comment. As for defending myself, I won't bother, other than to point out the inappropriateness of an attack on a post like this. Bye Felecia.

Lots of good suggestions and advice here. I am due for setting some new intentions and goals for the new year, so I am following along. My exercise routines have totally fallen by the wayside the last couple of months — our trip to Africa and coming home to a sick doggie did not help. And here we are in the rainiest year on record in my area, which makes my preferred forms of exercise much more difficult.

I’m considering getting Peloton — my husband is interested too. I’m going to go for a test workout sometime in the next week to see if it resonates with me, but I know a few people who love it. I need really firm goals (training for an event) and/or accountability to motivate me to workout! So I’m signing up for some bike events in the spring to get me training, and I might ease back into running more by signing up for a couple of 5k’s. I’m also committing to continue going to yoga classes at least once or twice a week. But I also need some good weight bearing exercise. I’m thinking of seeing if there is a good female trainer in my area to work with. Again, accountability.

You’ve gotten some great suggestions for the job search too, but I recognize the pattern you describe — I get in the same rut relating to work, but for me, as a self-employed person, the hurdle is self-promotion. I think at some point we need to stop fussing over perfecting our resumes and websites, and just put ourselves out there. (For this avowed introvert, not the easiest task!) I would try setting some goals for small steps in that area — reach out to one or two contacts a week, just to have coffee and connect, perhaps. Not digging for anything with them, but mentioning that you are in the market. Every little step helps. I will be doing the same thing in the new year to connect more with the arts community and my preferred client base in my area.

Good luck and keep us posted on your plans and how it goes!

I'll come back and write more detailed comments later, when I've looked at the resources people have mentioned, but right now just want to say THANK YOU to everyone who has posted! This is clearly a big deal to me, and I really appreciate all of you taking time to comment on what is very clearly very off topic!

Breaking things into pieces is double-edged for me. Working out can obviously only be done piece by piece, but if I don't have a measurable overall goal (right now mine is "restore the bubble butt", but how do you measure that?), it's hard for me to keep at it. I'm starting this program--the webpage looks like total commercial trash, but I've worked with this trainer before, starting when I completely pulled the muscle that wraps from spine to thigh (the psoas) a few years ago. She was the only person who figured out what it was. Thousands of followers, but she remembers me, and apparently everyone else, by name and what's going on with me. So she's great, but somehow "do the thing daily" just doesn't work as a motivator for me. https://glutecamp.redefiningst.....dium=progr I need to do something for upper body too, but will figure that out once I'm in an exercise groove. Oh, and there is a weekly free yoga session I want to check out--wouldn't hurt me to meet some new people!

On the more important issue--employment--I think I've broken it down too much and spent too much time dilly-dallying with a resume and LinkedIn site, to the point that they are becoming hedges against getting myself out there (& they still aren't finished). I tried this fall to find mentors by writing to people and asking for information interviews. Those aren't really done here, and the responses assumed that I was asking for a job--even though the letter expressly said I was not asking them to hire me.

I think what I need to do is start going to events in the field I want to work in (which is not academia or specifically the academic discipline I have a PhD in and have taught at universities), asking intelligent questions when appropriate, chatting with people afterwards, etc. That might lead to getting coffee (ie an informal info interview) later, and perhaps mentorship. And I need to start applying to what's out there. Many years ago, when I graduated from college, I sent out 60 letters asking for basically information interviews (even though I didn't know that phrase). I got a few responses, and two of those contacts forwarded my info on to the person who eventually hired me. I need to have the guts now that I had back then! Also, it's getting so dire that I really should just cold-call language schools and ask if they want an English instructor.

Stores close for 3 days in just over an hour, for New Year's, and I need food for this child, so will write more later. But thank you all again.

I agree with Kkards, breaking things down into smaller components helps. For example, getting into shape, or working out would not promote my success as a resolution. Instead, stating that I will lift weights twice a week, using a specific weight lifting protocol that specifies the exercises and weights to be used each time, and how to advance would be good, and having a spreadsheet to track my progress even better. Even on days I can only walk for 5-10 minutes, I write it down, because in the end, it all adds up and makes me feel like I have accomplished something. Every little step counts!

Exercise routines are very individual. Some people do better when they take a class, others like to work out by themselves. I am one that exercises alone, mostly, because I do best when I stay in a routine of exercising very early in the morning, often before anyone else would even want to be awake! I am up daily at 5am to do whatever exercise is on my agenda, then I go about my day feeling energized and relaxed. Most people seem to like exercise at the end of the day. DH is like that. He stops at the gym on the way home from work. If I miss my exercise in the morning, I usually don’t go back to it later. So, sorting specifics, and the sort of exercise style you have will be important to help you stick with any plan.

I am not one to offer advice on a job hunt, but I assume the same skills apply.

Sounds like you have a good partner to help you in Suntiger. I really like kkards advice to break it down.

Is there someone locally in your field who can mentor you? What about your former colleagues, do that have contacts you can draw upon?

Develop a plan - frantic scurrying around may make you feel good because you are doing lots, but may be lots of effort with little reward. Develop your network and get to know the influential people who can help you and give you a job. There will be set backs and you have to bounce back and keep going, even when you feel like crawling back under the duvet.

Definitely get out of that duvet and moving. Getting fitter will help you feel more in control because you can do this!

not sure if your an apple or an android...
this apps got great reviews...Strides: Habit Tracker, but i think the app only supports apple, although they seem to have a website you could use...

i find the best way to hit a goal is to break it into pieces...so instead of a goal to get a job, i'd break it down to very small parts...for example....
coffee/lunch/phone call etc with old colleagues...update linkedin profile...set up X number of informational interviews
that way i feel like A)it's actually something i can do that day, B) i can move something to my done list, C) its harder to put off a an easy task and breaking it down makes it seem like an easy task....the smaller the goal the better i feel....yes, what an i say, i'm pretty shallow, i get easily discouraged so small goals make me feel good....

Suntiger, the biggest thing is the scariest and stupidest to not do--job hunting! At this point, you'd think I'd be scurrying all over night & day to find work, but instead I find myself procrastinating beyond belief. I also need to get back in the routine of working out, to get rid of the belly I've put on here and also to get some endorphins flowing. I basically spent December under a duvet. That isn't me, and has to stop now! What things are you looking to change? If you want to ping each other more directly than through YLF, send me a message here.

Maybe this? https://wayoflifeapp.com

I used it for a while in conjunction with more general igoals -- I do a major reflection on New Year's Day each year and set specific goals in various areas of my life. Not "resolutions," per se, but more intentions.

I also have an "accountability" dyad with a friend of mine for our creative goals. We do it on google docs and check in with each other each week.

I'm making new years resolutions, and am looking for someone/something to help me stay on track. Do you know any websites or other systems that help people meet daily goals? A simple reminder email/text won't do it--I get numb to them very fast.

Alternately, does anyone want to help me out by being my own personal human cattle prod for a few weeks or so?
