Anne, I suspect that they don't think smaller sizes will sell because most of their clients are larger. (Realize that I live in the Midwest where the average sized person is heftier than on the coasts...all that beef and pork and fried food. Ugh!) I hope to change their minds. They sent me to a consignment shop that caters to young people. That one does have a big selection of small sizes, especially junior sizes. Brands are also mostly Juicy stuff and styles not appropriate for older women. I could have a wardrobe of hoodies and distressed jeans for a song!

Hmmm. I wear sizes 0, 2, or 4 (depending on brand, fit, etc.), and I shop resale a fair amount. It's true that the selection isn't as good as for the more "average" sizes, but the shops I frequent do carry these sizes, and I do have occasional luck finding items that work for me. So this may vary from region to region?

I personally love resale/thrift/consignment. I go in spurts with it & completely agree you have to dig. Oh the joy when you find your treasures though!!

I used to shop at thrift/consignment stores when I was in college. Somehow, I felt that there was better selection in college towns. Nowadays, there is just the local goodwill and it just seems to involve too much effort to find anything decent. Perhaps if I lived in a bigger city, I would find stores with better selection...

If you wear anything below a size 6, resale shops may not be worth your time. As my sizes went down most consignment shops told me they don't take items under size 6. Charity resale shops, especially those that benefit cancer programs, seem to have a few more small sizes.
If you are looking for basic black pants, jacket, or even skirt, resale may be a good place to look. Knits and jeans in great shape are more rare.

I have been seeing better brands and items in local consignment shop lately. Maybe people are going that route rather than donating to Goodwill, SA, etc.?

I'm fortunate that my fave shop gets amazing shoes with very little wear (have bought two pairs of Sigerson Morrison from them) and good quality handbags.

Still have to be choosy and also in right mind frame to "hunt" and a budget.

I don't do it now, as the country town I live in doesn't have any such shops, and I don't even use charity shops much, as the standard of donations is pretty low. People with more time on their hands do find bargains though.
When first entering the workforce I got some good deals from a consignment shop, including one dress I literally wore til it ripped in half!

But I agree with what the others said about needing time and being good for extras. And since I have little shopping time unencumbered by kids, and am very much the "I really need to buy a blue cardigan today" sort of shopper, I like normal retail shops, when I can see in a couple of minutes what the shop has.

This is another thread that includes some info and opinions on thrifting.
http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....replies=10

I personally love it and have found some of my favorite items at consignment stores. It's great for finding "extra" things for your closet, rather than basics (and I definitely can't go thrifting thinking "I really need to buy a blue cardigan today" as that never works.) I don't rely on it exclusively, also because I like to get a couple trendy things every season, and resale stores are by nature a bit behind the trend curve. So a mix of shopping retail and resale works great for me.

Here's a recent thread on this topic: http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....replies=12

Greenglove is one of our resident expert resalers, as are Sarbear, Antje, and Brianna.

The general wisdom is that you have to go often, look hard, and know what you're after. I have found many wonderful items in thrift and consignment shops over the years. For me, they present a more interesting hunt.

Years ago, long before Gap and other popular retailers carried maternity, when the only choices were horrible, cheap polyesters or incredibly pricey maternity boutiques, I outfitted my entire nine months of pregnancy from specialty resale shops.

Years before that, I spent many hours during college in a vast thrift store run by a religious mission, with gospel music blasting from every speaker. In those days, I was more into vintage items, and I found some incredible treasures: raw silk ladies' suits straight out of Madmen, cashmere coats, heavily beaded cardigans from the 50s. I don't think I ever paid more than $8 for anything.

Nowadays, I'm more likely to spend time in a local consignment shop that is quite picky about what they take, because my time is more limited and my budget slightly more forgiving than when I was in college. But I still love the thrill of the secondhand hunt...

My feelings are the same as Tanya's. I would love to do it more, but I never find anything. Maybe I just don't have the imagination to see the potential of these items. I also tend to be a very specific shopper. When I shop, I have something in mind. I do not just go shopping for the heck of it, or for fun. When I did shop this way (years ago), I did more vintage/thift shopping, but at that time I didn't really understand anything about style so I can't say I "found" anything in the sense of being flattering.

I personally like the idea of it, but whenever I go I do not find anything. I do not have the time to go once a week or more often. And there are very few things in my size. On the other hand, I have been consigning my own unwanted clothes with great success for the past two years, getting rid of many mistakes or boring items that were either new or almost new.

Hey Everyone,

I just thought that I would start a conversation to see what everyone else thinks about shopping resale/vintage stores. For me, I love it! I love the prices, the fashion etc.

A resale boutique in my area was having a store wide sale on Thursday night, so I took my mom and off we went!

Here is what I bought (all for $28.00):

Gold 3/4 Shrug
Pink Cluster Drop Earrings
Black/White Pinstripped Button Down

So, what does everyone think of shopping resale?
