Oh goodness, what a wait time. But I'm not really surprised. As much as I adore the city, I have very little patience for the stores because they DO get so packed. Well at least you still picked up something, so it wasn't a total bust.

@Karie -- the Philadelphia Zara is on the north side of Walnut Street between 17th and 18th. You won't wait in line for a fitting room, in my experience. Very easy to get to if you come across the Ben Franklin bridge from Jersey. Within a couple of blocks there is a lot of good shopping -- two H&Ms (yes, two, I don't know why), a big Urban Outfitters, a big Anthropologie, BCBG, Club Monaco, Cole Haan, etc.

Walk a block over to Chestnut Street and you can go to Joan Shepp and Knit Wit -- local boutiques, not chains.

(Philadelphia meetup, anyone?) :)

I have never had this experience at stores in San Francisco or Pasadena. The store at the Westfield mall in SF can get busy but the Post Street store, which is big (ladies dressing rooms on 2 floors) is never a problem. Then again I don't shop on weekends, only weekdays usually mid-week. I know this is not possible for many people's jobs though. One of the benefits of working weekends and having Tues-Wed be your weekend.

Yeah, I agree -- it's not teens only by any means -- it's just that teens and 20 somethings tend to crowd the place. Because it's affordable and high fashion.

I don't think Zara in general is a "teens only" place, but the teens were out in full force yesterday for sure. To be fair, many were accompanied by their moms, who were also shopping there. (Surely it's one of the few places where that's possible without being embarrassing to either of them. Something for everyone.)

I did almost give up in that long line, but was so impressed that they had brought me two sizes of something that wasn't even on display yet, I felt I should honor that kind of customer service.

Awwww. That sucks about the pants. How do they even make stuff look good on those models when the proportions and sizing is so strange?

However, you were indeed in Soho, which is a huge treat for moi. So I m jalouse!

You are a far more patient woman than I! I really dislike shopping in a crowded store and have never waited more than 5-10 minutes for a fitting room. If it's that bad I just leave. It makes me feel stressed and overwhelmed. I think that's why I didn't love my only shopping experience at Century 21 in NYC a couple of years ago and have not been back in there, even though I know Zap and others have found great stuff there.

I have ordered from Zara online (and been to their DC stores) and that's a much more pleasant experience! But their fits are problematic on me. Tops can work -- bottoms never have.

Too bad about the pants because they did look promising. At least you saved a return trip by trying them in store.
Zara and H&M just recently opened here. I went last week to Zara for the first time - weekday lunch hour - and it was busy but only a small fitting room wait line. I suspect evenings and weekends are a totally different story.
H&M was a nightmare both times I went. The store has its merchandise too densely packed and it looks very unappealing - not at all like the H&M I visited in Toronto. My DD stood in line forever to try some pants. She did get them, and a sweater but It was an overall painful experience for me.

Hahaha, April - you are hilarious!!

IK, Zara's mobbed with teens and young 20-somethings in TO and Montreal as well -- hardly anyone over 30 unless she is a mother of said younger woman. I'm usually the crone in the place. :)

Goes back to Torontogirl's thread about regional differences, I guess! Apparently in the Northeast, Zara is busy and thronged with younger women. In Texas, not so much.

But couldn't some of this have to do with the fabrications of the clothes? Honestly, I'd hate to wear polyester in Austin's heat!!

Good gravy, 40 minutes for a fitting room?! And only to come out empty handed?! How awful. And there's a Zara in Philly? My family/friends live a hop, skip, and a jump across the bridge in NJ - I'll have to plan on going over next time I get down there. Although with Zara's shipping being so fast, and returns being so easy, I kind of like the idea of the fitting room being in my home!

i used to drag my sisters into that Zara every time i came to nyc, but stopped because its always like that! there are others in the city that are way more manageable.
anyway, so sorry the pants didn't work out, they look so cool. i ordered pair of pants early this fall, on line they looked so cool, baggy plaids with a tapered leg. but when they arrived the fabric was so thin you could see thru them. once again, it just goes to show how unpredictable Zara could be.

Since it's the only Zara in the state of Pennsylvania, this always surprises me, although I realize that a large number of their shoppers would be, on a weekday morning, in homeroom.

Oh, April!!! That sounds like a total bust. I'm so sorry! I feel as if I owe you big time. The next time I come to NYC if you are there I am going to buy you tea and cake!! (This is YLF; we celebrate Angie style!!)

In terms of the overall shopping environment and the wait times -- this is pretty much my experience in the Toronto Zara locations (all of them) -- EXCEPT if I get there the minute they open, preferably on a weekday. Then, there is hope. Otherwise, forget it. Since I live several hours from Toronto, I typically order online and return to the store on my regular city visits -- but even then, I aim to get there super early!

The online ordering is a completely different experience -- at least for me. SUPER fast. Beautifully packaged. And easy returns should you choose to do it that way. No waiting in line. It's worth it. I send back far, far more than I keep, but I see no reason not to order. It keeps Canada Post in business.

I went to Zara in Soho today looking specifically for these trousers and it was an absolute madhouse. After I cruised the floor twice and hadn't seen them, I spotted a SA with a headset on and when I showed her on my phone what I was looking for, she radioed back to the stock room (the stock room! it really exists!) and asked her colleague to bring up two pairs, in two sizes, for me to try on. She then very helpfully suggested that I should get in line for a fitting room and said she would bring them to me.

That was very wise, since the line for a fitting room was at least 30 people long. I stood in it for 15 minutes before I took a single step forward. I was beginning to think I would have to buy both pairs, take them home to try on, and deal with returns later.

But -- in for a penny, in for a pound, and I waited it out. Forty minutes later, I had a fitting room.

Here's the report on those pants. Their shape is quite appealing, and the fabric is comfy. The "velour" they describe is not the poor-man's-velvet that we mean when we say velour in the US -- it's more like a french terry sweatshirt fabric.

But oh goodness, the fit. The waist is very large and the pants are very short. On me, the XS could be pulled right off while buttoned, yet the pants only came to my ankles before rolling. And my legs are short.

So, not a success pour moi. Too bad, because I thought they were so cool-looking on the website. :(

And it may be a while before I venture down to Soho again on a Saturday afternoon...
