ETA—this got really long. As the saying goes, I don’t have time to be brief. Sorry.

Lynn67, since you specifically included other forum members, I’ll bite. You are so correct about the wonderful qualities of silk!

I’ve had a black silk blouse since the early 90s. It is a short-sleeved button front shirt with a collar. My mom gave it to me with long cotton shorts, blue & raspberry plaid, probably some black in the pattern. I loved that outfit, and wore it until there were holes in the seat of the shorts. I’ve previously mentioned a blue paisley skirt that was a favorite with a black T-shirt and ankle boots. I sometimes swapped in the silk shirt. The shirt fell out of favor for a while, other than as a cover-up to get to the pool at hotels. Recently, I’ve worn it as a topper, for example with my black-and-white jumpsuit. I have never ironed it, and have no idea how it would look ironed. To me, the appeal is the surprise of this fabric in an otherwise casual workaday shirt.

I’m wearing a woven silk top right now—a golden tank top from Victoria’s Secret in the 90s. I’m wearing it as an undershirt, because it is soft and warm. I like to wear it with looser-weave tops, because (I think) the warmth glows through. I’ve never worn it as a shirt on its own, but have been thinking that I should do so—once it’s warm enough again. The knit Intimissimi tops I’ve been loving, as shirts and as undershirts, also have silk in them.

I have a couple sweaters from Winter Silks (now defunct). Silk is just part of the blend, but I love those sweaters, and feel they have held their shape well. I don’t remember the price, but my budget at that time was quite small, so I generally shopped sales. My Massimo Dutti burgundy/blackberry cardi is a wool silk blend; it is a real workhorse for me, because it is so warm without bulk.

I’ve recently cut the tags (literally) from navy and cream silk skirts bought in the 90s. They are a dream to wear, especially because the linings are also silk. (If I had to choose, I’d say get the part that’s closest to you in silk). I don’t get to wear my dressy silk dresses nearly often enough.

There are a couple articles—my patterned red pants for example, that I wish were silk every time I put them on. It just has such a lovely feel that can’t be reproduced, and hangs so nicely. You can probably guess my advice—go for it, but follow Jenn’s example and take your time to find the right item at the right price, because it can last a very long time.

Congrats on finding a great replacement for the older shirt!

Now, I do have an emberrassing question, if you mind answering a little more in detail: -why did you choose silk for a black shirt?

You should know that my poor self never ever had a 100% silk item :-(. I have had some knits in silk blends but never a woven. I simply didn't find it it my shops (and on my budget) BUT I should also add I have always considered woven silk it would be too delicate to pair with my other clothes, my life, my own person-and would wrickle(linen is OK, but that is completely other thing in my book). So, of course neither have I ever experienced first hand the advantages of wearing a silk item.

Normally I know SILK it is a quality natural fibre (that means dressy for me!:-)), keeps cool when warm and warm when it's cool-that's all...:-(.
I once tried a silk shift dress and found it too unstructured, too thin and so-- too revealing, ...too delicate...felt like naked:-)).

Please educate me, Jenn or other forum members, if so inclined, how can one include silk items within other lower quality fabrics- how does it feel wearing it in a normal daily life, where and how you use it, how to upkeep it....etc. (examples of individual items would be so great to read about). Thank you!:-)

Jenn, your new top looks great, I hope it goes the distance like the EF silk blouse. Your hair is stunning. When I moved to a new city (we lived in Sydney for 2 years in early 2000's), I saw a woman with similar hair to mine at my local supermarket and asked her if she could recommend a hairdresser. She was thrilled to be asked and the stylist she recommended was excellent.

rachylou, it is black.

Sal, I agree with you on this. If something similar comes back at EF, I'd be okay with duplicating.

MaryBeth, this is my first LilySilk piece, so I'll report back.

lozz_oz, there are probably things that could be done, but I don't have the bandwidth for a project like that. Eileen Fisher is circular, so I'll return it to them for recycling/renewing.

Sloper, the buttons are actually sort of a reflective, pearly black. They photograph as white because of the reflectivity but don't look that way in real life.

It only took two tries (and…um…6 months) to find the replacement for my beloved Eileen Fisher silk blouse. EF stopped making my original top, and the somewhat similar version they were selling sold out in my size before I got a chance to try it.

I found my replacement at LilySilk. It’s a bit shorter than the tunic length of the piece it’s replacing and it has a full collar instead of the stand collar, but the fit and material are both similar. Do I love it as much as the EF? No. But it’s good enough and won’t be neglected.

I normally wouldn’t wear this top with these particular pants unless I was planning to throw a long topper over the top, and that’s exactly what I plan to do if I go out. Like its predecessor, I plan to wear this piece both on its own with jeans for a FFBO, as well as to create a column of black to go under a topper on cooler days.

Photos 1 and 2 are the new LilySilk top. Photo 3 is the old EF one, which I wore until it got holes in the elbows. RIP at 73 wears.
