My red J Crew Lady Day coat sold on eBay for $100! Considering the windfall, I am chancing one more order of a coat from Boden. Pickings ARE slim out there, so if this one doesn't work, I'll likely be waiting for NAS.

I will look for a pop back on the website and check the clearance rack when I return it in store. I don’t have much hope. It’s not on eBay right now, anyway. Ah well.

It might be worth stalking the pink coat on the Talbots website, or maybe even Ebay, since it sounds like you are pretty sure that the next size up would work.

Update - Talbots cost came. The fit is better than thebgeen coat but would be ideal in a bigger size. It pulls some around the hip. The next size is not available, of course. The coat is beautiful and it’s the exact same color as my old coat that I miss, so I’m sad about this. But I promised I wouldn’t keep anything unless it was perfect and it’s not.

I will try Talbots come Fall though.

I do see the fit issue in the pic you took. I have the same in my beloved vintage red coat. I don't do the buttons up but your climate is too cold.
My favourite coat is a perfect cropped swing shape. Small up top and bigger at bottom just like me. I have decided any coat I ever buy in future will have to be a swing shape. There aren't many.
I hope you get good money for selling it!

I agree, the fit is not right, and I feel the same way about that fit issue (which I frequently have) — once I see it I can’t stand to wear it again! The coat is cut too straight.

I agree that you should be picky and not settle even if you get rid of this coat right away. You have others that suit the need for something warm. I think it may be worth keeping an eye out for great sale coats in Nordstrom Rack or the like, because sometimes I have lucked on a great item after the prime buying season, (and maybe try that pink coat because I think that cut is more agreeable to less straight figures), but stay picky!

Gigi, I just saw someone on the street wearing the green coat, and it fit her like a dream. That solidifies my determination not to wear it again. The black J Crew Chateau Parka, while a little warmer (and very prone to having cat hear stick to it), will work in roughly the same temperatures.

The good news is I am selling a J Crew Lady Day coat on eBay that definitively no longer fits me. There's already bidding on it, so the money from that will help if I decide to keep the new pinky-purple coat. I don't usually sell my used items, but I know there is some demand for older J Crew coats in that style, and it was a gift that I'm loath to part with--it only ever barely fit me, though, and now not at all.

It can be so frustrating to find a coat that's exactly what you want, only to find that it is made for a different body shape.

No worries - I won’t settle. The color of the Talbots coat would make me extremely happy if it works. I got the last one, which is why I ordered so impulsively.

Jaileen - the Hawthorne rose color of that coat reminds me of a coat I used to love that died that was my favorite of all time. They had my size left (or what is hopefully my size) in that color and I ordered it.

I think if it doesn't work out, though, I'll wait and see. I promise you all I won't settle for anything. I settled for the green one (I think there was no size up available when I got it), and it was a mistake. The color of the Talbots coat would make me as happy as the green--and I'd be even happier if it fits well.

Suz, that's good advice, thank you. NAS might be good for this purpose.

Jenni, I think my time on YLF has made me pickier about this stuff, and I was fooling myself about how bad it looks. My only full length mirror at home is in my bathroom, so I don't see myself full length in this coat very much at all. My building's lobby has mirrors, but I wasn't looking at myself that closely. The bottom of the horizontal placket of the coat pulls to one side much more than I thought, and also pulls that whole part of the coat crooked. I'll try to take a picture later before I leave work. That said, I get a lot of compliments due to the coat's color, and it keeps me warm, so I can just suck it up and wear it when it's the right thing to wear for the temperature. But now I know for sure how bad it looks.

missvee - I'm quite sure it can't be altered. The coat is structured in such a way that the zipper can't be moved. Even if I took the zipper out, I still don't think there's enough fabric for the whole thing to lay straight. I don't think I want the expense of altering if I just intend to replace, anyway. Alterations are EXPENSIVE in NYC.

Do you like the coat other than the ill fitting zipper? Is it a good quality piece? If so I’m wondering if you can have it altered. Option 1) would be to replace the existing zipper with a two way zip that you can leave partially undone, or 2) remove the zip altogether and replace it with either snap fasteners, or buttons.
I agree with the others though - don’t buy anything new that isn’t what you really want.

I would suck it up! What's the psychology? Why is it suddenly worse now than it was all the months you've been wearing it?

nemosmom, I could well be wearing that coat on and off until May, if I keep it. It depends on the year.... I think the new topcoat will probably do when the temps are closer to 50, though. It DOES have room for layers underneath. I think I could even layer a blazer under it - certainly a vest. I have a Patagonia sweater zip up vest from work.

smittie, this is what I have. The two fur lined ones are for colder temps. The topcoat is good closer to 50 degrees 9with the possibility to layer, as I said). It also gives me a lot of the same happiness and dressiness factor as the green one. The remaining items are mostly good above 50 degrees (the puffer is very lightweight).

I would wait unless I saw the HEWI. I would either layer under lighter weight coats, as Nemosmom suggests, or simply wear one that is a bit heavier than desired. I would wait for the NAS, which sometimes has great coat options (not always, of course). And meanwhile I might try on a variety of styles to find those that are most likely to work, even if they aren't in the right colour.
