Emily, I'm trying to think what it was even about! Something about "Do you wear unflattering colors( maybe!) around the house?" and I can't remember who started the conversation. In the comments, Steph's main point was to set the dye afterwards with a special fixative, which apparently a good dry cleaner will do. I have used Rit in the past and only set it with table salt, which did not work very well. The dye faded onto other items that were washed with the newly dyed clothes.

I am a fan of home-dying faded jeans. I use the washing machine and Rit liquid dye, I will have to check out the iDye mentioned by Laura.

Splurge. I delayed duplicating my favourite jeans and tried cheap substitutes that did not work at all. Then they stopped making the favourites! Luckily I eventually found some (old stock I guess) online. Ordered two pairs

Claire, dyeing is a great idea, if the fabric is still in good shape, Emily. I've actually dyed jeans at home - there are dyes that go in the washer but the best dark dyes are the ones you 'cook' on the stove. It's a little time consuming but not as intimidating as most people think. I like the iDye brand - Rit tends to fade quickly. Dharma Trading is a great resource for all things fabric dyeing.

I voted nay, just because that's a big difference in cost that you could use for something else, and you seem pretty convinced that your skinnies aren't going to get that much wear anymore. Also, you sound pretty satisfied with the AE pair - obviously if you were only putting up with them you should ignore my opinion.

Thanks all for chiming in! I do rather love skinnies with boots, booties and flats, so maybe it does make sense to get the tried and true pair... On the other hand, I didn't know that it was possible for the dry cleaner to overdye denim.

@Claire, do you happen to have the post handy? I went looking but didn't find it...

Ok, I'll be an outlier. I think you should have your dry cleaners over-dye them dark again and skip buying a new pair. Steph (MsEccentric) was talking in a post recently about how the DC can dye and set the dye really well so that it doesn't run.

I have a pair of perfectly fitting dark wash AG skinnies that I bought on clearance at the Rack. They were like the Holy Grail when I found them. The sky parted. The angels sang. You get the picture. So I decided I'd be really smart and duplicate them in a medium wash when I found them in L.A. at the meetup last fall. I tried on every pair in my size and bought the best fitting ones. But now after some wear, I notice that they are just a little more slim in the knees and lower in the rise than my dark pair (enough to make them less comfortable) and I don't reach for them as often. Even though the fiber content is exactly the same, they seem to stretch less, too. Compounded with that is the fact that my eye is adjusting and I'd much rather have a looser fit skinny in that color. I'm really kicking myself for buying them because in my case, duplication backfired.

If you can afford perfect and it is likely to be a workhorse, why settle for less?

For something you don't wear much, or to try something new, I understand the urge to go cheaper...but not for this!

I recently sprung for a new pair of my favorite Paige skinnies because my old ones have been workhorses for at least 8 month out of the year. Even though looser fits are trending, I think I'll still be wearing these with roomy sweaters in the months (hopefully years) to come (I'm a fan of some structure in an outfit, so I prefer to wear roomy tops with slimmer fit bottoms). They play well with all kinds of boots and booties, which makes them a big player in my wardrobe.

So I would go with the jeans you know and love.

Always go for best fit - you will wear them. In my experience, trying to save some money by buying the "good enough" ones means you will always think of the other "best" ones and wish you'd spent the extra.

I think that skinnies have now become a classic, so why not invest in ones you will love to wear? The Aikos look great. Although I tend to wear my boyfriend jeans most often, I still give my skinnies, straights and boot cuts plenty of love. As Catnip said, you can (and should) enjoy multiple looks.

Get the ones you really love. Skinnies will still be around for awhile. But also try some looser fitting jeans to get the feeling of the new trend. You can have both!

I'm facing a bit of a dilemma re: skinny jeans. I am not ready to give up on skinny jeans entirely, but I am torn because I worry that with trends shifting to looser fits the skinnies will not get as much wear as in the pat few years.

My favourite dark rinse skinnies, Silver Aikos, are not looking as crisp and dark as they once did. I bought them in 2011 and have worn them a ton, 150+ times, conservatively. I've had a new pair on my wishlist for a while. New Aikos (#1) would cost $100, so splurge is sort of relative, I guess.

When I was in AE last week I tried on a pair of their skinnies for about half the price. The fit was not the clouds-parting-angels-singing perfect fit of my Aikos, but it was darn good. I like the very dark wash.

What would you do?
Yay: Splurge
Nay: Save
