Apparently they send two sizes just in case one doesn't work out. I think it is the beginning of a great idea, though it does have flaws right now. Like Marianna, the idea of getting an expensive dress that gets hardly any wear is not appealing to me, so I could see myself using this if the need arose.

But, I am guessing that if you had an occasion that was formal enough to warrant a couture dress, it would be that much more important for it to fit and flatter exquisitely. Sometimes you can try on a thousand dresses and none of them will work out, and it would be a disaster to have to wait until the day before the occasion to try your dress on and find out it doesn't look good. They should allow you to select a maximum of maybe five dresses to try for free, send the ones you don't like back within a certain amount of days, and charge you only for the one you keep. And if you don't send the ones you don't want back, you will be charged for them for each day you keep them beyond the allotted time.

There are many services like this, even one for designer handbags. I think it's a great concept and could be very helpful for special occasions. I personally hate spending a lot of money on a fancy dress that I'm only going to wear once or twice (and then it sits in my closet) -- and this type of service solves that problem. There is a boutique in Chicago that buys your old formal gowns and then rents them out for a minimal fee. That's a great idea too.

I don't know, I'm in two minds about this one. The opportunity to wear haute couture for an evening is very appealing, however it would not be fitted to my body and badly fitted couture may look terrible.

Also, even with the insurance I would be terrified of damaging the dress.

The other hitch is still the price point, I could buy beautiful non designer items for the price of the rental.

I guess it's just not for me but for somebody else it may be the perfect solution.

For someone who goes to lots of fancy dress events it sounds like a great idea to save money and wear fab dresses. I might also be a savings for someone like my friend who has 5 teen/college daughters for those homecoming/prom/military ball events.

I just saw this intriguing article on the New York Times website:
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11.....wanted=all

It's about a new business called Rent the Runway, which is like a netflix service for fancy dresses. You get the dress in the mail and return it postage paid. A 4-night rental of a dress costs $50-$200, which they say is about 1/10 of the cost to buy the same dress retail.

What do you think of this? Is it something you could see using?
