My black skinny jeans are entering their 5th year. Their blue counterparts has been upcycled in a pair of clams. I have bootcuts from 8 years ago ( high-school) . If a jean fits you fairly tailored ( neither super painted on skinny neither slouchy) it's timeless ( ofc if the quality is ok) .

I can so relate. I have had jeans for years and years that were worn to the point of being unrepairable.

In our highly consumeristic and disposable society, there is something beautiful and emotionally satisfying, at least to me, about finally throwing something out that has been totally used up and worn out; not selling, donating or disposing of some barely worn closet orphan or out of fashion trend.

I am reminded of this post I wrote way back: http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....this-today

When I was in grade school, about the only jeans a person could buy were brand new, 100% cotton, unwashed denim, so all the kids would come to school for the first month wearing cardboard-like pants. Then in junior high and high school it was all the rage to buy pre-distressed jeans, but they were never as comfortable as the kind you broke in yourself.

In high school I used to buy men's jeans in unwashed denim and break them in myself. I wore those pairs until they quite literally fell apart. And maybe I am really behind the trends, but a person can still do that if they want to. Well-fitting, straight-leg jeans are NEVER outdated.

I still have a couple of old David Khan bootcuts that I bought about 7 years ago. Now they're a size too big so I wear them on my junkyard and urban exploration forays, pegged with hiking or combat boots so the hems don't drag in dirt, oil, etc. They even do a passable job as boyfriend jeans.

It kinda stinks that styles change so much now that jeans only last a few years. I had jeans from the Gap and Levi's and Calvin Klein I wore through all 4 years of college. I really doubt I could do that again now. Not because of quality concerns, but because the cut would start to look dated.

I totally relate to this IK. I remember a pair of Levi's I got in Grade 8 - I brought them home crisp and brand new, filled the bathtub with a mix of water and bleach and soaked them in the tub for a while, partially dried them and them put them on and wore them for a few hours - they formed to my shape completely and I wore those jeans until I graduated high school. They were soft like a Kleenex and they were always the pair I grabbed when I wanted to be comfy. When the knees finally gave out, I hacked them off into cut offs. It was like losing a friend when they finally became unwearable.

I was just thinking the other day about how I used to wear my jeans until I blew a hole out in the wafer-thin knee. Then I'd try to patch it up and wear some more but by then the writing was already on the wall...

I feel more like jeans aern't as well made. Even if I did keep them that long, they wouldn't last unless only worn sparingly.

I have always tended to mid-tier jeans, but I know you like premium denim, so the lack of longevity makes that extra hard.

I miss it, too! I love old fashioned sturdy denim in a classic cut. Had to find my photo album and reminisce about a pair of Levi's that I wore to pieces in the 80's. today's fast fashion is really not a positive development at all. Classics that can be worn into the ground are winners in my book, every time.

As I graduated it was bootcut.. So got my jeans altered and now it's skinnies... So off it went under knife again and I am wearing them today :)

Oh yes, memories of those stiff super dark Levis and a year later or so, soft pale, super comfy and then the holes would start, all natural here and there. Now we buy that look. My always had holes right under the back pockets, so the plus to buying them is that I am no longer flashing people!

Nope, I haven't worn a pair of jeans to faded glory in many many years. On the other hand, I do have a pair of slouchy pleated grey trousers that have been faithful for 18 years now. i bought them the year I moved to Norway and because they are classic, have been able to wear them pretty much ever since. They look to my eye the same as the day I bought them. No fading, and actually little wear on the hems.

I've been helping costume a show - early Renaissance - and I was thinking about how a skirt or a neckline really would have been worn for years and years - even with the introduction of new styles. You would alter what you had to try and adapt to that new style, but otherwise, you would keep on wearing what you had.

But I never thought about this question in terms of our lifetime!

I feel like jeans styles go past so fast these days that by the time I broke in a pair of jeans the way I did my old Levi's the style would be beyond dead.
