I said:

"Mine is to distill the essence.

That probably sounds a bit vague. But Sharon's post the other day gave me a window into how to do it -- along with Angie's invitation to post the year's best outfits.

I'm going to examine what my top happiness quotient outfits have in common. Then I'm going to focus my culling and buying so that I get more of that."

I went on to talk about buying more quietly distinctive higher quality items, with detailing like colour blocking.

Well, I've bought a few more high quality items (a couple of cashmere sweaters and a pair of COH jeans from ebay) and also a new colour blocked mice media item. But other than that, I haven't done much buying at all, and I'm not sure I've identified the common elements that make for "highest happiness factor" in my outfits. Other than COZINESS. Which until this winter, never mattered a whole lot to me.

Oh well. I still have 3/4 of a year to get this figured out, right? Right.

Thanks for the link, Joy, that's where I found mine:

My style goals are rather fuzzy. What I know for now:

1. figure out how I want to dress for my new job.

Haven't figured this out yet. I'm just wearing what I used to wear at my old job, and I'm not sure it's optimal.

2. get more control of quality vs quantity in my purchases.

I'm definitely buying fewer, better quality items.

3. figure out how to do WIWs now that I’m in an apartment with not a ray of direct sunlight and precious little indirect.

Well--not really!

I'm content. Progress on one goal is progress!

Mine covered the whole year--- some are started, some must wait, and a few others I am slacking on . . .

1) Purge my closet-- working FT, I have no excuse to hoard things that don't work "just in case". It is time. (not yet-- soon!)
2)Purchase a couple warm underlayers (merino baselayer type) and new
toppers so I don't have to wear fleece to work all winter to stay warm
in our frigid building (the building is slowly warming up, but AC isn't on yet, but I didn't complete this)
3) Ditto with a pair of fashion boots -- got a pair for Christmas-- I love them! goal 3 accomplished on 12/29
4) Dive back into the world of makeup after a multi-year hiatus (did this back in January-- still want to get to sephora for some advice on a new foundation and maybe blush)
5) Purchase a few new summer pieces (new knit skirt, new dress, shorts, BF jeans, sandals) plus work tops/toppers (working on this now)
7) Participate in NAS and shop Fall/Winter early in the season
8) Post outfit photos -- I have the camera, shutter release and tripod to make it easy! (haven't been regular, but I did post photos for the challenge)
9) Replace a few loungewear pieces
10) start analyzing how things work together as a "style", investigate accesories
11) Buy an item or two that makes me feel sexy, 1 more gear piece

Prepping for spring, buying loungewear, and the closet cleanout are top priorities right now!

I posted mine on Angie's blog post.
http://youlookfab.com/2014/01/.....-for-2014/

"* Work on making capsules for every season and occasion out of what I own and like, finding and filling wardrobe holes and items needing updating and editing." I've not had time to do this yet but really need to!
"* I enjoy playing with a new-to-me color and want to try some pastels." I have pulled out pastels while shopping my closet but so far have not bought anything in a pastel color.
"* Along with that goal is stocking up on light neutrals as high contrast using color is hard for me." I added light neutral shoes and booties so far.
"* In purchasing, being aware of any difficulties that an aging body will bring, especially arthritic fingers vs fastenings." For this reason I'm going to try to resist buying any new open sandals, although our summers are super hot and I may have to give in. I do intend to wear the ones that I already own at least for this coming summer.
"* Be realistic about my casual lifestyle and invest more there." I have been resisting more Halogen pencil skirts and plan to add cropped boyfriends to wear as shorts when I can find time to really figure out what I need.

"1. Stick to a one in, one out protocol."
I've been doing this in a more loosey goosey method, not keeping track of numbers but using my drawer space and my number of hangers to track this. Whenever I bring something new home I try to think 'is there anything in this category that I don't need anymore' and see if there's anything I can cull. I don't have something 100% of the time but its becoming a habit, which makes me happy.

"2. Track my spending and adhere to a monthly budget."
I've been tracking it, which I wasn't doing before. So far, I've been over budget each month, though. Doh! It's useful information, though - means I was underestimating what my budget needed to be. Fortunately, I've got a bit of flexibility with it right now.

"3. Further develop my specialty capsules."
This I've done - I now have a business travel / conference capsule although I haven't had a chance to try it out yet, and most of a dressy occasions capsule.

"4. Focus my acquisitions on the high wear items."
I *think* I've gotten better about this - but I don't have any specific data, just intuition.

"5. Shift toward a more rock and roll, Americana vibe and away from modern classic."
I've bought a few things in this vein and have tried to keep it in mind when looking for new items. Could do more, but it conflicts with the whole budget thing!

My main one was to not buy so many shoes -no getting every cute pair on sale in my size, even though I may have thought I needed them. so far I am doing very well. Only one purchase that was finding a pair of navy pointy toe pumps-a real; bargain too. but before I bought them I walked around the store for a long time, then sat down and analyzed how much wear they would get. Now they are going to be my best pumps-go with things I have and will get worn all year round. I am going with more navy and grey to replace black.

Have to admit for a shoe collector this has not been easy, but now I am really analyzing my shoe mistakes, why some work and why some do not,, not just how comfy they are, but as per my other post, style, frumpiness, etc. play a role too. And every shoe trend is not necessarily my style-also discovered that pointy toes can work well for me too. So from now on my shoe wardrobe will be functional and fashionable, at least to a larger extent.

Mo - this was why I didn't make any resolutions, except to try and evolve and make better choices. Too much pressure. But I admire everyone who did articulate their goals, whether they reached them or not. It's still worthwhile to take stock and try and make better choices!! Life is process, not perfection!!

Oh geez. I listed six, and I'm making progress on a couple of them.
#1. I'm narrowing down my colors for new purchases, but I haven't made the purchases I planned.
#2. Yep. I did well adding texture during the end of Winter sales.
#3. Find interesting tops. I've found one so far. More work to do here.
#4. Figure out my shoe mess. Thank heavens I didn't jump right on this one, because a couple weeks after I wrote it the doctor gave me new requirements. I have done a very good job filling in the massive holes left by the new guidelines.
#5. Soft white tops...only 1 so far. I went looking for more yesterday and found nothing. Still hunting.
#6. Purge. Yes! See pic below of what I put out for the charity pick up this morning.

So, 3 are going well. The other 3 need more attention.

ETA: took several pair of pants to tailor this morning to be hemmed for the new lower heel heights.

it is about a week from spring (yes, I know it seems winter will never end) and I thought it might be time to look at how we're coming along with our fashion resolutions for the year. http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....esolutions
Me? I'm failing miserably. I think I repeated one outfit, and it was just BF jeans with a drapey white tee. And now that I think about it, I changed the footwear, so it wasn't a true repeat. Gotta work on this, so I can be more content with what I have and not always looking to the new.
You? How are you doing? Better than you'd expected or room to improve?
