Wow, some of the answers are deep. Not mine, sorry :)
I use Pinterest for my personal use, I do not repost, publish pictures anywhere and do not follow links.
For the last 3 years I’ve been creating a yearly board where I save pictures of my purchases. I also have boards with my wardrobe sections by a season.
I’m a visual person, having access to grouped images helps me analyze my needs, wants, successes and failures. And it is easier than to keep pictures in photo albums on my iPad.
I do have some inspirational boards. Sometimes I would search by a brand name to see styling ideas. I found their search function kind of dumb. Mostly, I find an item similar to what I’m looking for and click on More like it. I do not like to read the content or follow links, waste of time for me, not very informative.

Synne, Boolean expression! Why didn’t I think of that? (Slapping my forehead)

RL, yes, that’s exactly it. When I look at the screen of images Pinterest brings up, there are usually just a couple that appeal to me, so I want more of that. When I click on one I like, I get the same—a bunch of stuff that doesn’t work, maybe 1 or 2 that does. And I want to read the content, because my eye doesn’t pick up on everything.

Diana, I hear you that the way people use all of these platforms can be problematic. I’m looking for ways that I can use them, without contributing to the problem. Thus far you’ve suggested I should know content creators who are likely to put up an outfit using the stuff I’m thinking of. Unfortunately, I have nowhere near that amount of knowledge about creators. What other suggestions do you have for me?

ETA Diana, I think this article addresses your concerns. https://www.thelingerieaddict......mages.html It makes sense to me, when talking about people who somehow present themselves as fashion insiders. That’s not me, and even if it was, I tend to (annoy people by) ask(ing) the site of cartoons, memes, and other images I want to share. So I get that point. But I still don’t see the intersection of that issue with me trying to figure out what shoes to put on. Please help.

I don't use Pinterest. Agree that it has completely taken over every google image search. I usually type "search item -pinterest" (minus pinterest) to avoid it.

I think you’re wanting the images on Pinterest to be portals to further information? I guess I’m saying: just think of the images themselves as the information. A lot of times I don’t even look at the description/caption (which, in many ways, reflects the problem that Diana is calling out, I must admit.).

And yes, you can definitely delete pins from your saves pretty easily. I don’t usually bother, but some people (Runcarla maybe?) keep pretty strictly curated boards.

I mean, are you going to get in trouble? Almost certainly not.

Personally, I just don’t feel comfortable using the site these days, except to look at “official” stuff (like the boards of the brands themselves, or the creators). You get theft/misattribution on every site, obviously, and when you put your photos, art, writing, etc, out on the internet, you know there’s a chance that it’ll get stolen and misattributed. I just think that the degree to which that happens on Pinterest is too high for my personal comfort.

And while I am sure that your motives are good, not everyone’s are. I’ve seen “anonymous” Pinterest photos get used in things like mocking “worst outfits” slideshows and things like that. And yes I’m aware that people do that with blogs, Instagram, etc too but because of the anonymity aspect of Pinterest all the cowards and trolls come out of the woodwork.

Again, though, that’s just my personal reasons.

Ja, I wouldn’t bother following links, just scroll down the Pinterest page. I *do* look at the Shop pins, because sometimes they seem more accessible to me, more current and representative of what might be out there Now, not because I’m buying. The one thing about Pinterest is I feel you get some
different things than what you’d get from a Google search...

Diana, in this search I noticed a couple of images that came up on multiple people’s sites, whether Pinterest or regular websites. I’m not buying artwork or clothing or subscriptions. I’m just trying to figure out if any of the shoes in my closet will work with these pants. Does it harm the creators of outfits for me to see them on someone else’s site? I realize they don’t get the traffic to their page but don’t see how I can prevent it since, like I said, I was seeing images repeated on web sites as much as on Pinterest. What would you suggest I do about that?

So you guys ignore the “50 ways” kinds of things and just look at top photos?
Sarah, if I pin them all, can I dump them later easily? Cause when I started ylf, I got in the habit of saving things I like but don’t have. They’re useful for recognizing themes, but a pain to wade through when I need to find a specific item. So I don’t think I want a lot of pins of women wearing ankle pants.
RL, you know I want to shop my closet. Just can’t figure out footwear for my windowpane pants. I do see that the link I happened to choose is dodgy, but I have the same frustration with other ones too—when I like one, my assumption is there will be more good ones where it came from. You’re saying to ignore that and just go on down the page?

Ok, first off I will say that Pinterest can be nice as a mood board, as others have said.

HOWEVER, although I have an account, I rarely use it any more because I find the ethics of it hugely problematic. It is easier than easy to strip the attribution/copyright/ownership of images on Pinterest, in such a way that it’s impossible sometimes to find the original source. This is obviously a huge deal for things such as artwork or other copyrighted creative work. For example, you can find knitting patterns on Pinterest that are stolen and reposted as unattributed images, and then the original designer gets no profit or even credit.

Same thing goes for things like outfit photos or even things like Instagram posts. For ex, you can find images from Angie’s blog that don’t link back to ylf. Some don’t link back to anything.

And yes, you do find plenty of legit posts as well, but the problem is that it’s often not at all clear.

Sorry to rain on your parade, but I think it’s important for people to know this.

Same result here... Pinterest has tagged that pin as dodgy. The pics below are things the Pinterest algorithm thinks are similar.

I think of Pinterest as more of an electric mood board, doing like Sarah describes. I don’t usually dig down, unless it’s a recipe or gardening tip. The links provided by the Shop suggestions may give you more of what you want... a solid link to something real and buyable.

So, it looks to me like the picture that intrigued you is unfortunately connected to a sketchy link. When I click on the "29 ways" link it says "we blocked this link because it might be spam." That might be why you are getting a blank tab when you click.

It sucks, but not all pins are like that! Here's a pin that was among the "related pins" to the one you linked to:
https://www.pinterest.de/pin/531213718542968921/

And, if you click on that photo it will indeed take you to a blog post giving more info.

That said, I find it most useful to use Pinterest as a purely visual source of information -- by gathering multiple iterations of a certain thing and then analyzing the similarities/differences.

So here's what I do when I want to use Pinterest for outfit inspiration:
1. Go directly to Pinterest (not Google)
2. In the search bar at the top of the page, type what you're interested in, e.g., "windowpane pants outfit"
3. Ok, so you get something like this:
https://www.pinterest.de/searc.....%5B%5D=win
4. Scroll through the results. Every time I see something that makes me go, "I'd wear that," I hover over the picture so that the "Save" option comes up, and click "Save". (You have to have a Pinterest account to do this, though.)
5. After a while (IDK, when I get bored scrolling, or feel like I've saved a good handful of pins), I go to my pins (button with my avatar photo in upper right hand corner). Now I can see all of the images I've just saved all together in one place, and I can start thinking about what they have in common. Like: "Oh, I like plaid pants paired with ankle boots, but only when the ankle boots are the same color as the pants." Then you can use those clues as a starting point to build outfits.

Does that make any sense?

Pinterest photos and its feed are self-perpetuating. You'll see the same photos pop up over and over and over again , and there are usually no dates attached unless you go back to the website the picture was taken from. There are hair inspo photos there from 5 years ago - for example. I use and love Pinterest, because I'm a magazine picture ripper from way back and this is fun for me. But it's complicated to explain, and I'd just tinker around with it until you find a way to make it work for you. The search bar at the top is most useful for " Christmas party appetizers", or "short blonde pixies 2020" , "how to wear cropped pants" etc. The results don't link to websites : that's not the function of Pinterest. There IS a button to "view" the source if you like the picture enough to research the details on the original source.

I was encouraged to use Pinterest when I first joined the YLF forum. I still don't get it. Can you help?

I want to wear my theory windowpane ankle pants, but need to figure out footwear, as well as the rest of the outfit. So I googled and came up with this pin (SO MANY results are in Pinterest----grrrrrrr. Wish it would just show me normal websites, but this is what I've got) https://www.pinterest.de/pin/766174955342696589/

It says "29 pictures" but only shows me one. The things below it seem to be separate pins--if I click on them, I get further promises of other bunches of things, but only one shown. I see that Yasmin somebody saved it--is this her site? When I click on the phrase "29 pictures" it takes me to a blank screen (on a pinterest tab). The same thing happens when I click on the website at the top and just to the right of the picture.

Would someone please help me use this thing? Way too many results pop up in it to ignore.

Thanks!

PS one more question--the date! How do I see when the thing was posted? I'd rather look at ideas from the last couple years than 1999, but don't see how I can tell.
