bj11111, I know, right? SOOOO AWESOME! :)

I suspect that the Levi's one will be better than the COS one for you. I've seen both. Levi's is a better length.

My client sized up, and I stayed TTS. It's boxy in front, and round and billiowing at the back. I sized up two sizes and liked that too! However, I JUST bought a very bespoke acid wash Yorkie denim jacket that is oversized, so didn't want another.

Maybe size up ONE size so that the sleeves don't drown you.

So much good advice here already. As others mentioned you already did all the hard word, you've sorted through your closet, removed what no longer works, AND you've identified where you want your wardrobe to go moving forward. Huge accomplishment, bravo! I wish you luck with your wardrobe update.

For the outfits here, I like 5 with different shoes instead of a sandal and 6 for a work setting. And you look lovely in black! The taupe and cobalt suggested sound like they would be superb additions too if you want a dose of color.

That is a cool jacket for you! I’m reminded of a great gender-neutral reversible jacket that was offered as a Levi’s-Sacai collab. It was soooooo cool, and I saw it in a boutique in Philadelphia when another customer was trying it on. She ended up buying it, and no more were available, so that ship sailed. Nordstrom had a couple that were similar but not the same — I tried them both and the fit was all off for me. But so clever.

@Angie, that is COOL. I had been eyeing the cos men’s jacket that is v reminiscent of Loewe and missed out on the xs—

Woooohooooo to earth tones and cobalt with your black!

Also, forgot to mention, I have a client who has a very similar look and style to you, and I just took her shopping at Levi's, where she went moggy over the "Blue Tab Japanese collection". I think you'd like it too - it's very unisex so try items across the genders. I just got a Japanese denim jacket from that collection that is cut BEAUTIFULLY. Think you'll like it too. VERY versatile:

@LJP, you hit it on the nose. Being in the fashion capital where anything goes, I still have to show up clad without feeling like I gave up. Honestly, wfh days aren’t any better—when I see no reason to change out of pjs. I’m just going back to bed in a few hours!

Oh, and LOL at Teresa. I say try the Miramars. I find the side stripe version especially forgiving. My issue is more evenly distributed around my waist these days than just in the tummy, but I get it. I mourn my old waistline. I can’t decide if it’s crueler or not that my bra band size stays the same while my waist circumference goes up, like everything is sliding down my body, LOL.

I haven't read all of the other replies yet - and I feel a bit weird commenting on the fashion direction of someone living in the fashion capital of the US, lol but here's my 2 cents:

I love all of your looks and don't think the side striped pants in #4 are too long at all (as long as they aren't actually touching the floor). The only "issue" I have is with open toe shoes . They immediately casualize a look (plus I'm surprised that anyone in NYC goes open toed!) even thought the sandals themselves are dressy. My eye goes straight to them in each outfit, and I'm not sure it's right for the office? Although I wear sandals all summer at work too - but my workplace (non profit medical fitness) is more casual simply because we are in a suburb of a small city. Anyways, I'd vote for even a mule or more covered sandal if you hate shoes in the summer ;).

@Debbie, transitions are hard! I think a simple stick pin or tie pin may be the ticket

@Angie, YES to taupe. Felt left out of the the fun with caramel and warmer browns until I found a cool taupe. I think a Tiana in taupe would be just the right cold office topper. And yes to cobalt. The color hasn’t been too available.

Lots of ideas to action

I think I need a garanimal system for retirement.

You have an incredible sense of style. I definitely think you are on the something here.

I like Janet’s idea of the tie top. I love the pearl brooch but I can see where you don’t for work. They’re a ton of interesting brooches right now and I am sure you can find something if you don’t have one already.

You wear black well. I love black but sometimes think it’s wearing me instead of the other way around.

The outfit with the scarf is my favorite. It’s dressy casual on trend and avant gard.

I can’t wait to see what else you come up with.

bj1111, glad that loafers are in full swing! Probably fine to expose toes now and then, although a GREAT capsule of closed shoes is in your favour.

I KNOW Theresa can stomach anything you throw at her - with panache!

Some more thoughts:

Athleta Skyline Barrels are an idea in black. They come in petite. Size up. (#1)

Keep a DRAMATIC patterned ruana at work for the cold. That will always work over voluminous tops and sleeves!

Hear you on navy! It's more Preppy, which you are not. That said, I can see dark navy work well WITH all the black. Like this navy drawstring top over black pants. (#2)

Also think that taupe can be good for you, and works beautifully with black. (#3)

You used to wear cobalt blue, which pairs beautifully with black!

Things to thing about ;)

@JenniNZ, as if I could keep any new items from you all. I love those loafers. They have a bit of pilgrims vs punks reference

Ooh, this is exciting! Your style is so cool that it’s hard to imagine you needing help, but I think we all like a little feedback from time to time.

I am going against the prevailing advice re: #4. I actually really like the slight pooling of the trouser with those shoes, and I might try a different jacket instead. I like that jacket a lot, but I’m wondering if a different silhouette and less detailing on it might make the look gel a bit more. A bomber or chore jacket type silhouette?

I do like pic 2 as is! For a closed toe option, how about something with a black and white color block effect? Echoing the white dots without being too referential? Or something with silver which could have the same effect (I’m showing my boot finds below as an idea but I’m sure there are loafers or flats out there too if you want a more summery ankle-baring option).

For pic 5, I wonder if there’s a good tee with a tie detail that could give you the same sort of vibe. I have one from A Piece Apart that has a bit of drape and interest and could support a simpler brooch for interest. Ooh, and pair it all with some metallic closed-toe flats to pick up the shine in the brooch.

My style is pretty conventional (as evident in my current post ) but I'm absolutely loving your sleek, urban, edgy style.

I'm thinking yes to refined loafers, maybe even a pair of two-tone black and white ones since that's your current colour palette. Adds interest to any monotone colour scheme and looks a bit dressed up but can also read casual too depending on which boss you're with.

@Jaime, thanks for the permission to (over)post more!

@Angie, sticking to black, grey and white for now. I do want to incorporate more navy but navy sucks the edge from items and corporatizes the look.
Which is what I’m going for

@Suz, you hit it on the head, I need a lighter sweater or substantial jersey tee that drapes like the sweater in pic5. And your comment about bookending polka dots is reassuring—it felt a little unbalanced without the studded sandal

@RobinF, pointed toe loafers are my grail. I have two coming that I have high hopes for.

@Cooky, the brooch reads night time / gala/ brunch to me. A small piece may work. I have a ladybug and a blue bejeweled cricket that I will try

Ladies! Always coming through in the clutch

@LJP, I work in healthcare nonprofit

@kkards, I do wear open toed shoes in the city but the yuck factor is getting to me and am looking for slightly dressy platform sandals. I am v curious about the miramar—rag and bone tho does not design for curves and I worry that Teresa (my belly pooch) will be too exposed in her glory with the drapery fabric. Just have to go try. I did pick up a pair of athleta trackies that need a good lopping. We’ll see if I /teresa can stomach that level of youthful dressing. I think I have to commit to shortening the pants or commit to a more oversized denim jacket or more appropriate bomber that is not black

@Angie, open toe is coloring slightly outside HR lines and I’m ok with it. I do have several loafers in various stages of comfort and I’ve ordered a couple more with properly pointed but not witchy toes. Will do a separate shoe + work outfit updates to see if I’m on the right track. Yes to casualizing with accessories. And who knows what “retirement” will look like. Will rework pic2-5 to see if I can “workify” them even more, including potential surgery on pant #4pic

i'm back with some add't thoughts and suggestions

i know you don't want to buy a lot, but based on what you described, I'd recommend the R&B Miramar pants. they are truly a dress up or dress down pant, and are beyond comfy. i'd wear them with a tee and a blazer or again a bomber style jacket or even knit 3rd piece. i'd also recommend a pair of adidas track pants, again these dress up or down easily and work with everything and everyone (IMO)

OK, I love, L-O-V-E, the brooch-pinned sweater. Why is it too much? What about with a darker or less shiny brooch? Of course it’s true it’s not going to be weather appropriate at the moment.

Wow, you have awesome style! I quite like all of these, including #4 but would love to see them with something besides sandals - love Kkards idea of some funky sneakers! #6 is gorgeous although would feel very wintery to me but different shoes could change that. What about the pointy shoes in #4? Fab skirt in #7 and top in #3.

Gosh so much goodness.
Do you wear open toe shoes in NYC? I admit that I don’t live in the city, but having sisters who live there, I have to ask.

Anyway, I’d get some funky sneakers to mix and match with these outfit. And as Angie suggested a pair of loafers -and/or a woven leather flat.

I love #4, but I’d change out the denim jacket, I’d go with an either a more oversized denim jacket or a more cropped one. But I’d probably go with a bomber style jacket or blazer instead

I'm with Jaime. You are killing it! These are great outfits. I echo everything Angie said, including her questions about footwear, jackets, etc.

Re #2 -- I'm not sure you need to bookend the dots in the blouse with your footwear. Maybe some jewellery if you wear it -- i.e. a ring, earrings, a cuff -- you wouldn't need dots. Just maybe something that repeats the circular shape somehow.

Pic 3 -- love!

Pc 4 -- really like that jacket. I suspect Angie is right about the pants.

Pic 5 -- love this! It should be possible to find a top or a tee in this shape, no? And if you take away the brooch, maybe try a scarf tied asymmetrically the way they are doing these days, or just carry a cool bag and/ or wear and interesting cuff or earrings (if you wear those at all).

Pic 6 -- yes, for sure, swap the boots for Mary Janes in the heat.

Pic 7 -- could be work appropriate, yes.... I am thinking you might want to try some more structured (vs. knit ) tops like in pic 3, both because wovens can be cooler in the heat, and also because they can provide a bit of crispness which can work well in the business setting when you don't want to wear a blazer or a full on suit.

Love your style, all of these are either excellent OR have high potential to be.

Some pointy flats of some description or loafers with a twist could be excellent. I like the studded sandals and these might work on some days for you too (they would work here but NZ'ers love sandals)

I like the denim jacket, side stripe pants. I always struggle to feel good in a denim jacket despite liking them on others. No more for me!!

I love your style and look forward to seeing more of it. I agree with all your observations except for pic 4 which I really like. I think it has a good mix of casual and polished that you want. The pointy shoes being the polished part. If you were wearing sneakers that would obviously make it too casual. Maybe pin the length and show us before if you decide to hack them. I like them as is for now. Different vibe to hacked.

WELL DONE, bj11111! Editing your wardrobe is the first BIG STEP!! Getting rid of the noise to find peace is sooooo important. Can't think with noise.

*APPLAUSE*

Have some questions:

Do you need to wear closed shoes for work?

Do you need to wear jackets to work to combat the cold?

Are you sticking to a black-white-grey-denim palette? You LOVE black, and wear it well! Works extremely well with your hair and skin tone!

For #4 - it's the pants, to my eye. Not wide enough to slouch. If you like them - may I suggest a hack to showcase the shoe and your cute ankles.

And you used to LOVE loafers. Where are they!

Rest assured, met you in person, and you always look sartorially KILLER ;)

My 2 cents:

Based on what your bosses wear, Smart Casual and Business Casual YOUR way - (with a whole lot of architectural fashion forwardness thrown into the mix) - sounds like the sweet spot! #5 and #6 are THERE (unless you can't wear sandals to work)! These are items you can CASUALIZE later with support acts like casual shoes, bags, hats, belts, and jewellery. For when you don't work, or head into retirement.

First I read your post and thought that is a pretty tall order - bespoke suits to jeans, Harlem to the upper AND lower East sides. But then your outfits blew me away. I love every single one. I think #5 might be the most versatile, and #6 the most UES but mostly I am inspired and the opposite of fatigued .
