I think your existing dress is beautiful, Vivian. The problems you mention are super easy to fix. (As in, I could do them myself in 20 mins, so any tailor could do them in a snap.). For the top, just replace the snap with a permanent stitch. And just sew the skirt closed (or even just safety pin it if you want the option to wear it open sometimes).

Viva, I'm so sorry you have had health challenges lately. I hope you're on the mend and feel 100% very soon.
I adore the floral dress and I agree that wraps can be fussy but I think this one would be worth tweaking to wear for the rehearsal dinner. Would a black slip alleviate your worries of flashing too much leg while walking?
Of the other two, the Club Monaco is a winner. I don't care for the all black dress for a rehearsal dinner.

Thank you all for your encouragement to make the floral dress work. I'm definitely going to take it to a tailor and see what can be done. Carla, you are so wise - your comments hit home. If I don't fix this problem, I'm going to avoid that dress altogether, which I don't want to do. And Jules, I may just do some bike-short type thing just in case.

Oh I hate clothes that fail so badly when you wear them! But you could wear something under the dress, such as black bicycle style shorts. Shapewear brands like Thigh Society make them. I pretty much always wear them under skirts in summer for reasons of comfort both physical (chub rub for me) and psychological (removes any worry of wardrobe/wind malfunctions and just makes me feel totally confident and worry free about going about my day in a skirt).

Sorry it has been a tricky spring for you Viva.

To my eye any of these options would work for the rehearsal dinner- I agree you will be busy and need an easy outfit. Alterations might be just the ticket. I could see the black dress with bright shoes and earrings working well - do you have red or orange sandals with a chunky heel from memory?

I loved my rehearsal dinner - I also have attended a couple of others and they were happy positive fun nights.

I'm wondering, like the others, if you can make the dress you have work. It's wonderful and so festive!! I like the black and white dress; however, black and white can feel so every day and it's such a wonderful occasion. I vote no on the black dress. While it's a nice dress, again, it's simply not celebratory enough for your daughter's big occasion.

Viva, I agree with the folks advising finding a fix for the floral dress. If you get it fixed so that it doesn't open in unexpected ways, you will be able to wear it comfortably on other occaisions and it won't become a closet orphan. If you don't get it fixed, I bet you will pass on it when opportunities arise when it might be an option. I agree it is a perfect dress for a rehearsal dinner.

If you are determined to find another dress, go for colour. This is a time to celebrate!

Agreeing with Angie all the way, especially about the "no black dress". I just don't see you as a black dress person, especially coming out of that beautiful, lively floral, which just needs a little work.

The dress does seem problematic for the rehearsal, but, those things could be modified, maybe? If you have time to get a new snap installed, and maybe sew a few stitches into the skirt so it doesn't open so far. It's so important to be comfortable and confident for the rehearsal. It's certainly a lovely pattern.

Are you sure the existing dress couldn't be made to work with a better snap up top, and a strategic stitch or snap on the skirt? The floral dress is absolutely gorgeous and so perfect for a backyard rehearsal dinner. I think definitely worth considering what a good seamstress might be able to do before buying another dress that you don't sound excited about. (The two possibilities you posted seem fine but don't wow me in the same way as the floral -- admittedly I'm a big fan of floral prints so I might be biased.)

Hi all,

It's been ages since I posted but I am trying to sort out my style once again and could use some opinions. It's been a challenging spring healthwise and now I look at my closet and I am just not inspired at all, plus my energy is a little low. I feel like I need style first aid!!!

I purchased a dress for my daughter's rehearsal dinner, and I wore it out last night to dinner with my husband (anniversary). (It's the floral Yumi Kim dress below.) On the plus side, I loved getting dressed up for a date night. Portland is pretty casual but it felt great for both of us to wear something sort of special. We went to a beautiful restaurant but I realized I would wear a nice dress out frequently, based on how I felt in it, even to a more casual place.

Well, the dress itself was great for a date but will not work for the rehearsal dinner. It may have been a poor buy, frankly, but I'll try to get it out for date nights. The main problem is a wrap skirt that can open quite far when I walk (like, show much of my legs). Walking with my husband it was fine to hold the edge of the dress and just laugh when a breeze came. Also, the top is held closed with a snap and it came undone a couple of times. I know it just won't be good for the rehearsal dinner where I'll have a lot to do greeting people, passing food, and gathering plates, etc. (Backyard dinner.)

I found these two options but I really have no idea. I love them both but they are completely different ends of the spectrum.

Any thoughts? Other ideas?

Many thanks,
Vivian
