What an emotional time you had. I would have found that difficult even without the larger loss of Dad, just seeing clothing again you thought you had emotionally let go of. I love the Raggedy Ann bag, it’s cute. Reminds me of Holly Hobbie which was similar, more my younger sister’s era.
Thanks for the extra pics too, cute dog.
I still have a few of Dad’s sleeveless vests which were a major part of his style. I want to wear them but they’re too masculine looking on me… can’t let them go yet although he died 15 years ago…

I’m late seeing this, but wow, what a trip down memory lane that must have been! It certainly kicks up all the feels, doesn’t it? I’m so glad your friend could be there with you, and that the experience included laughs as well as the harder stuff. It was like that when my sister and I cleaned out our parents’ house after my mom died — lots of tears but lots of laughter too.

An aside, but your hair looks super cute in that ice machine photo!

You brought up a memory from HS, funny now but not the best times for me! Strictly from a fashion perspective, I had no idea how to dress and even if I had I wouldn't have had the money to do it. I wore a great number of hand-me-downs and sewing projects of very dubious quality, and a few things I liked but weren't exactly in style. A big mishmash of clothing with no particular aim.

There was one dress, one of the hand-me-downs. A knit dress that I didn't like at all and wore only a few times. It was from a cousin way across the country and definitely not from a national chain. Well. About a year after I was given this dress, a girl showed up at school wearing the "identical" dress. I was amazed to see one just like the one I had! And said something along the lines of "I used to have a dress just like that". She was much closer to the popular girl crowd than I was so it was only the surprise of the thing that made me even say anything to her. At which point she blushed and a bit later mumbled where she got it...the local thrift shop. This was the 70's, long before thrifting was cool. I was still confused because I had no idea my mother had donated it. I thought mine was still hanging in my closet unworn.

And that's my story of the time a thrift store led me to embarrass one of the popular girls. HS was soooo much fun.

Thanks all, It wasn’t all horrible. There were a few very funny moments. Like in one of the hotels the air conditioner was just under the window. It was blazing hot, my friend went to go look out the window. The AC vent blew straight up her shirt. She said Woah that’s cold or something to that effect. I was like what did you expect standing there. I started snort laughing for quite a few minutes. She yelled at me to stop because she was laughing too and I was going to make her pee her pants. I was still laughing.
Something something menopause things
And I swear the ice machine pic will be future blackmail material.
Bonus shot of a “souvenir” I bought in a tiny town. And I lost my sole (don’t worry those hiking shoes are ancient). Failed attempt to buy fruit. But on the way back home we got from this guy and his dog, I think the dog’s name was Coco Chanel, or some variant there of. She was smart and hiding in the shade

That's emotional, Anna! WOW. A whole different level of goodwill re-buying, for sure. Uncanny. Hometowns are full of bittersweet memories, and it can be quite a journey. Glad you had your mate with you for excellent moral support. Glad you plan on seeing more of each other too. Old friends who go waaaaaaaay back can be extra soothing. xo

Hi all, long time no post.
Earlier this summer I went on a road trip of sorts to east of the Cascades (eastern Washington and North Idaho) to try and finish up some stuff with Dad’s estate. I went with an old high school friend who needed to do some similar things as she her mother just passed and her father isn’t doing well. Despite the emotional heaviness aspect of the trip she was a great partner on a roadtrip.
I was picking up somethings the estate auction guy had found and saved for me. At the end I stopped sorting and just had to walk away from all the stuff. I got a flat $ amount for him to clean out stuff and sell. If I couldn’t find it, or remember I had it, so be it. The estate guy ended up donating a huge amount to a local conservation group. That made me feel better.
When we were in our hometown, she wanted to walk around downtown as she hadn’t been there in far longer than me. We actually ran into another person we went to high school with.
One of the shops we stopped at was a “vintage” clothing and music store. She was looking for records. I was poking around. I recognized this Raggedy Ann laundry bag, that I was 95% sure came from my room. She said it can’t be. I’m thinking how many Raggedy Ann laundry bags are around. Then the red coat plaid, which I definitely recognized. The blue wool coat they tagged as from the 90’s, It was from the 80’s. I remember, and Hello, the shoulders. I then saw my giant fleece from REI from the 90’s. It was one of the items I seriously hemmed and hawed about keeping. A different friend earlier in house sorting, said I should get rid of it. I was tempted to rebuy it. At that point my friend made me get out of that section before I found more stuff, I think I spied some jackets from Dad.
At that point she ordered me to go to the front of the store where they had vintage and fake vintage band tees. I told her I was going to look for Siouxsie and the Banshees, she said good. I didn’t find any.
I’ve heard of people accidentally rebuying Goodwill donations. This was a whole different level.
I was very grateful to have my friend with me. We’re hoping to hang out more in the future, she lives not far from me now.
I’m still thinking of the REI fleece to be truthful. And telling the store to relabel the blue jacket.

ETA a pic of me loosing a battle with a hotel ice machine. I did put up the yellow slip warning sign, Safety First
