When I ran out of things to redecorate, paint and redo, I started in on "me". It seems so many principles of style and design are universal. All of it building blocks to the life we imagine for ourselves.

Mine is the other way around. I am very good at interior design, but fashion wise I had fallen into a decade-long slump/frump.

I am dressing more and more like my house every day: sleek, modern and uncluttered, using brown, gray & white as basic neutrals with bright pops of color in orange and turquoise and a mix of metals.

Not just decor, everything.

No more nonsense or time-wasters for me, no more too much stuff I don't know the purpose or practical or truly decorative value of. Minimalism and quality all the way. I've been decluttering like mad for the last few months - every time I open my wardrobe I think "this is what the rest of the house should and will look like".

After the style statement thread (http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....l-me-yours) with the 2 word style statement exercise, I read a little more about the topic. I then posted "Organic Elemental" /"Organic Essential", but since I have realized that "Essential Organic" is more likely to describe my overall style, clothes, home, care products, etc.
To quote a portion of the book:
"Essential -- Aesthetic based on natural materials, pure colors, uncomplicated and graceful design."
"Organic -- Aesthetic based on sensuality, quality and construction, shape is important; timeless and simplistic styles, handcrafted, socially responsible and eco-conscious."

I am an idealist and pay attention to ethical and environmental issues. I am a minimalist and fairly organized. I like a few distinct pieces that have a personal or symbolic meaning. I favor "pure"colors which to me means neutrals and basic colors like red and blue, though muted. I prefer natural materials and quality construction. Even my skin care and make-up products tend to be simple and score low by EWG standards (which is good). I am also somewhat nostalgic and like vintage and antique pieces, but that is not the dominant element of my style.

My home is far from what I want it to look like style-wise, but I am quite careful with purchases, slowly getting to the look I want. Like clothes, I have strong likes and dislikes and follow with that. The only difference with clothes and home is that my home colors tend to be slightly warmer while my clothing is cool colors -- like Suz.

I think my home style is quite different from my evolving fashion style, but I might be wrong about that.

First, colour. As I've mentioned before, I love gold and yellow but cannot, cannot, cannot wear them near my face. But lots of our rooms are painted various shades of gold or yellow and we have yellow accents throughout the house. Our predominant colour scheme favours primary colours, albeit softened versions of them. Our living room is a dark red and we have dark blue sofas as well as an off-white one; the carpet is a multi-coloured kilim. Our halls are rich gold, our hall carpet a greenish blue, some other rooms are a sort of olivey or sagey green, our floors are orangey oak, our wooden furniture is mostly antique, but antiques of the rougher variety in pine, basswood, and other light orangey woods...do you get the idea that I am not afraid of colour in home decor?

Along with our antiques, we also have some clean-lined modern pieces of furniture, and most of our art is modern. I'd actually like to have more modern stuff, and get rid of some things. For example, the dining room's tiffany lamp. I'm not a fan. But the woman who sold us the house made it, and it matches a very pretty window she made for the hallway. So we kept it out of respect to her and as a nod to the house's age. In fact, a lot of our decorating decisions were influenced by the age of the place. Not that we wanted to slavishly reproduce; we did not. It's just that some colours worked better, some furniture fit better, etc.

Does this translate to my fashion persona? I'm not sure. Maybe, in a broad sense - a traditionalist with an edge who isn't afraid of colour?

Like for Nancy it was way around for me. We were renovating our kitchen last year and I was above my ears in the design aspects - both practical and visual. I was going through multiple designer blogs at the time and YLF was featured in one of them. I clicked on the link an was immediately hooked.
I think my style was more evident in my house and garden design than in the way I dress - and now they are more in sync!

I have read that fashion trends follow home decor trends or perhaps it was the other way around. I do tend to decorate in a manner similar to my fashion choices. I use few accessories (knick knacks), and layer those that I do have. I like to have a neutral backdrop as well. I redid my BR and used some purple accents and did note that I also purchased a number of purple clothing pieces.

Interesting observation.

Yes, it happens to me at the moment! I was just thinking about redecorating and changing things up a bit last week. I'll probably do something about it in february/march when I have an university break. I'm feeling like I desperately want to declutter - others would probably say I was crazy, because I really don't own that many things.

While digging out the Christmas decorations this year, I purged a lot of items that I once enjoyed but no longer feel like displaying in our home. I've also found myself getting rid of things like old throw pillows that I was saving, candle holders that aren't quite our new style, etc.

It occurred to me that my personal style evolution is influencing the choices I make for our home. I'm choosing things that are simpler, higher quality, but still with an edge or a twist. I have some training in interior design, so this is particularly interesting to me.

Has your style journey taken you into examining your home decor as well?
