Robin--interesting, I also usually don't wear the correct colors that day. But I would! Even an ugly holiday sweatshirt for each holiday. Burgundy is nice, especially for winter season and holidays.

Angie--I did not notice that about our complexions. I figured I was "cool," but never got it analyzed, so that is good to know.

Sal--black as a national color--I have never heard that--interesting. Yes, 1 and 4 are good. And though 4 pops for the holiday...those are separates you could turn into something else!

Elena--I do know. My ex-husband was a socialist, and he would NOT have been okay with me dressing up for the 4th. Even the term "America" is problematic, and U.S. is preferred, I know that. I asked him about flags, sparklers, etc. and he said it had been a debate in his circles for a while. And they decided not to do U.S. pride symbolism for the reasons you say.

There are other celebrations of America which speak to something else, but something important. Have you heard the song "America" by Simon and Garfunkel? Makes me cry every time. It is a tribute to the entrepreneurialism of anyone who ever made it to New York.

Carla--love that...my one pair of Christmas earrings are something I can wear year-round, too. Having a well-rounded closet helps holiday dressing.

Ginger--so interesting about the idea of these primary colors, and how the right combination is important. I certainly have made the mistake of putting the wrong blues with reds, etc. Cool you dress up for Memorial Day--I don't know many people who do that. I guess red and blue would be apropos.

Sal--navy, white and red is a winning combo.

Tam--those outfits sound cute. I'm glad you approve of my "Sweet Home" looks, because I certainly am not from there.

Donna--I see what you are saying now. It is a big flag wrap, but with tears. Interesting piece, and a great statement.

Jaime--nostalgia is right. I remember one or two Christmas dresses from my youth.

Jenni--I can attempt an explanation, though Tam probably knows more. I think of a country rock look, like how Skynrd looked, or the Black Crowes. I also think of a festival/Coachella/tire swing by the pond look, which would be easy dresses, halter tops and the like.

Tam--cool designers--I checked them out. Also hinting into Texas/Western-wear territory, which is clothing I like.

JAileen--all black for the fourth. With a cute black brooch!!

Lisa--love the tee, it has a very motorcycle feel to me.

Suz--thanks for that link--I will try to check it out when I can. Yes, it is always nice to have some red, white, and/or blue pieces we can put together for holidays.

Janet--a patterned shirt with a denim bottom is a sensible idea. Especially if you don't want to rack up too many clothes. I usually end up doing stuff like that.

lyn67--very subtle. Maybe more of a European approach--things are super casual for holidays here, with people walking around in red and green pajama pants in public around Christmas.

Carol, I'm not a fan of cobalt for my style anymore. I used to wear it - and enjoy it! Especially in the '80s. These days I much prefer turquoise as my bright blue! (My complexion is warmer than yours. You wear cooler reds, pinks, greens and purples better than I do!)

OF COURSE, I love cobalt on others! TWO clients last week called cobalt their favourite colour :)

Star--thank you. It is a great combination that also looks good as preppy, graphic, beachy, whatever. I like it, too.

Angie--I love that you "know your blues." And I see cobalt isn't in there. I have a similar coloring to you, and look good in some of the same blues. Sometimes I like cobalt items--sometimes they work, and sometimes they are hideous.

Jenni--that is a great song, and great outfits, true. The jacket...you know, I know a man from high school who moved to London, and he is very extroverted and very politically aware. On July 4 he pulls out a jacket like that, with matching pants, and saunters around London!

kkards--I love those shirts--very low-key and classic. I do not know that brand, but it looks like a good quality.

I do not wear holiday color combos - no red, white & blue, no red and green, no black and orange. Not sure why, I just never have. I don't mind tweaks on the colors - like say burgundy with denim and white - but avoid anything that might look too much like that specific holiday.

I agree Ginger that tweaking the colours can make red white and blue easier to wear. Coral for red is one swap, or the light denim blue instead. Or just an accessory in the red can be fun. I would totally wear a navy and white outfit with a red pair of shoes.

I've always thought red, white, and blue is a great color combination. Red and blue are complementary, being almost opposites on the color wheel. And I've always liked white as a neutral. I don't always wear all three together; it depends on the day or occasion. Memorial Day Sunday, I wore a red dress that I often wear regardless of the occasion. Usually I pair it with a matching red cardigan, but that day I wore a dark navy shrug. Partly because of the day, partly because it showed my (red) poppy pin that was otherwise invisible.

Many (not all) of my local sports teams have red, white, and/or blue in their logos, so this is an easy way to show team spirit without having any logoed gear at all!

I also really like playing with the formula by tweaking the color. An easy one is a red tee with light blue jeans. Red and green is especially important to change up this way! Once I had a lime green dress that looked great with red accents, not at all Christmasy. "Light red" is a bit tricky, since usually that's just a form of pink. To my taste, though, it's still important to get the right balance of light vs. medium or medium vs. dark shades if I don't want to look costumey.

(I will not make political remarks; it's not something I come to this forum to read.)

Well, I look for inspiration everywhere, and enjoy the challenge of dressing for a commemorative day or holiday - with garments I already own!.

Since red features prominently in my wardrobe, Canada Day (July 1st), Valentines Day, and Christmas are covered. I’ll dig out green (and brown) for St. Patrick’s Day and Earth Day, and also around Christmas. Black, sometimes orange for Holloween. DS #1 had a cool t-shirt that was the skeleton of a torso. I’d wear that, or skulls (like the famous scarf some Fabbers own). Pastels for Easter. Earth tones for fall and Thanksgiving. Greys and blues and possibly some sparkle for New Years. Purple for IWD.

I don’t have any team wear, but DH and the DS’s have Seattle Seahawks merch.

If there’s a special event, like an eclipse or some other natural phenomenon, I might wear something with stars, etc - if I have it.

I don’t want to say too much, but I hate that “patriotic” symbolism has been co-opted by a sector that doesn’t understand what America is supposed to be about. I would love to see the rest of us take it back someday, but I feel like wearing it now makes a political statement I don’t want to be associated with. Know what I mean? Having said that, I also don’t wear high contrast color combos very well, so I wouldn’t put bright red, white, and blue together regardless of the statement/symbolism.

Red white and blue is a lovely combination. I think of it as American,
British and French. And our flag is these colours too but our national colour is black which is mostly what our sports teams wear.

I might wear red white and blue but it’s not easy to get it right. I do like 1 and 4 the most.

This is the scarf I bring out for Independence Day (July 4) and similar holidays: A sheer stylized flag sullied by tears because I am heartbroken by what has happened to this country. It’s big enough for me to wrap myself in this very sad flag.

If so inclined we use to wear a small red, white, and green (colors of hungarian flag) ribbon or even a rosette on our chests/lapels on an otherwise predominantly black and white, possibly dressier outfit for Revolution Day on March 15 (commemorates the outbreak of the 1848 Revolution and War of Independence against Habsburg rule). It cannot be more subtle than that and is in early Spring, so kind of in tune with the season.

I’m not a big theme-y dresser, so I’ve never been hugely into wearing classic holiday color combinations. I prefer a subtler approach, so I’ve usually done something like wear a red and white patterned shirt with blue denim on Independence Day. But I’ve never bought anything specifically with that color combination in mind, and I barely own anything red these days, even though I like it as a color and it looks nice on me.

Jill Lepore is doing a series of interesting shows on the New Yorker Radio Hour podcast, some of which are interviews about how people feel about the 4th of July and the 250th. Lots of talk of fireworks and hot dogs and a little bit about sartorial matters, too. https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/.....0768540607

I don't theme dress for holidays, exactly, but I definitely wear red at Christmas, and sometimes I'll wear red and white on Canada Day. They happen to be colours I enjoy and enjoy wearing together, so it's pretty easy to do it in what feels like a natural way, as in, this is an outfit I might wear on another summer day, LOL.

I really like red, white, and blue together, too! It's a great combination. The Brits can wear that combo, too, if they are into national pride dressing! :)

I like dressing in seasonal colors and holiday prints. Especially when it's a graphic tee. The tee I plan to sport for all blue, red, white themed holiday's this season (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day) is in the finds.

Well the only holiday I really dress for is Christmas. Our national day in New Zealand is more political if you like (February 6, the day the Treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840) so it isn’t really dressed up for. Ours is a summer Christmas of course so I really enjoy wearing red, sometimes green, lots of earrings etc.
I love your examples, they’re great. The male outfit in pic 3 is a bit much for me! I like the “Sweet Home Alabama” looks as you’ve described them- love that song, it was the favoured song of our final year class at high school in 1978!

Similar to what Star said. I am neither American nor a patriotic dresser of holidays. AND I wear a lot of blue, white and red outfits!! I love the palette. I'm wearing it now.

My blues are: ink blue, navy, French blue, aqua, turquoise, sky blue and light blue - and BRIGHT tomato red, or occasionally fire engine red. I wear all sorts of whites.

ETA: I'm Dutch - from The Netherlands - and wear a lot of Dutch orange too. Although it's more about wearing the colour I love, than being dutch!

Not from the US or one who does holiday themed dressing but a big fan of red/white/blue together. I don't wear it often but I love looking at it (if that makes sense) and your examples are brilliant.

LJP--oh, for sure. That's why I put "or other holidays." And honestly, a big reason I don't own any July 4 stuff is that most of my family and friends are firmly left/liberal and don't really want to be wearing it the last few years...but I do enjoy the fireworks and hot dogs.

I don't personally wear themed clothing, but I am building up a Canada Day shop for the pro shop at work. I've created (with the help of Canva/AI of course ) a great red/white t-shirt with a custom logo and am actually headed out to find some Canada Day (July 1st) decor stuff today . Red/white and blue isn't a good look in Canada .....with all due respect.
