These just look SO Great on you, Suz. Especially those pants! I am so jealous. My butt would look like a huge round Christmas ornament in those lol!

I agree with your take on the velvet shirt - nice, but not particularly luxe looking to me, which I think is important in velvet. Sweater looks lovely.

This post has been up for a few days. I just realized that it is phrased as a k/r question. Hard to believe, because these all seem to be your groove and to fit you just right. J Crew can be tricky for some, but when it’s right for you, it’s perfect. These all seem to fall on the good side of that line. It can be so hard to decide on HEWIs, at least for me. My mind keeps spinning and asking “is it really the one?” Going with a brand you know is a good way to resolve that.

As to J Crew sizing, I don't have any problem with shoulders. Mind are slight, relatively, and I need to size up in fitted shirts anyway since I'm short-waisted and curvy. As mentioned above, it does tend to be narrow in the torso.

Most of my J Crew items are tops anyway. I have some pants, but those are very hit or miss on me, and a few jeans, skirts, sweaters and dresses. I have to rely on reviews etc to get it right.

These recent items have been winners.I do have some pants but from past season (not so focused on needing pants during the pandemic and in my current verge of moving situation--mostly wearing jeans and I have plenty).

These are great pieces! I love the pants on you, really perfect. I also love that velvet shirt. Interesting about the fit, I have always found them to fit small but I can't remember if I have tried pants and now from your description they may be good for my body type. Good to know.

I'm late to the party, but you are very well dressed for it! I really like all of these items -- to me the standout is the lace shirt. Wow!

Re: J Crew sizing, I do find them to run narrow through the shoulders and torso. I have relatively straight hips and a thick waist, and have been able to wear their pants in the past (I haven't really tried recently, because rises). I actually have a LOT of J Crew in my wardrobe, but it's all stuff that is designed to have a less tailored fit -- popover shirts, cardigans (which I wear open, so the narrow torso doesn't matter), a skirt with elastic at the back waist, a couple pullover sweaters with an oversized cut.

Anchie, I hear you. We have the same issue of no free returns here from J. Crew also. I used to be able to return to a store -- in person -- but now because of Covid and no doubt their financial issues, they have closed all our stores. Temporarily, they say, but I wonder. Anyway, returns cost and delivery usually costs, too, but this time I got it free.

I think online ordering only works if you have tried on enough of a maker's clothing and/or reviews and measurements given are accurate enough. It can be so risky and fraught otherwise. Ideally, makers would give accurate measurements and people would measure themselves just to be sure.

Oh everything looks so great. You know how to select things that suits you.
Just when I decided that J.Crew is not working for me, and now I am tempted again. We don’t have a J.Crew store here and ordering from US site is expensive and risky. There is currently good promotion going on, but returns are complicated and not free. Zalando here is selling small set of J.Crew items and I ordered recently few pants just to try to estimate sizing and fit to have more confidence ordering from US, but it didn’t help much, because nothing was good fit and I still don’t know which size I need.

So fun to see that different people are in love with different items. I guess that means they are all wins. Yay for me!

Now, to wear one or two tonight for supper alone with Mr. Suz....

On J. Crew fit -- it's so interesting...when I look at photos of you, LaPed, I'd guess you are a slimmer, slightly wider-shouldered version of my shape...and Carla -- you are a taller, slightly wider shouldered and slimmer-legged version, i.e. we are all slim hourglasses, with some curves. And yes, there are variations in where our curves are, for sure....but we all have athletic thighs, a strong shoulder line, some curve to the waist but not a huge curve.

Fit is sooooo strange, though -- I guess it is the variables that make the difference. My calf measurement is actually the same as yours, Carla, and I'm a lot shorter, and my thighs/ hips are only slightly different -- enough to be proportionate with my shorter height. And I, too, have a longish bum (as how could I not, with my long rise?)

Meanwhile, Christina, who is curvier, often has great luck at J. Crew! In fact, it's often in checking out her outfits that I decide to make purchases for myself. So....scratches head....it must not be curves, exactly, but some other proportional issue at work....although even there, I have to wonder -- Christina is a bit short waisted, as am I, but I don't think she is long in the rise like I am, and her legs are relatively long while mine are just barely relatively short ..and on and on.

I do pay very close attention to the reviews when I order from them online. I look for reviewers who give good information about the fits. But by and large, I do pretty well with them. Even with the stuff I send back, it's rarely a fit issue -- much more often it's because I decide the item just isn't going to work for me.

I will say that I have tried some J. Crew jeans that worked great and others that were terrible on me. (Same problem you describe, Carla). Some of their earlier skinny styles were just not ever going to work on me, no how. But when I examine my closet, a huge proportion of what's in there comes from that store. I try to avoid it and always end up going back because it works better for me than most of the alternatives. The items below are just those in my current rotation...I've retired a ton, too!!

But in future, I will order shirts/ blouses a size larger, I think, based on these two. These ones work, but I wouldn't want to go any smaller in that shoulder area.

It’s all stunning in you. Those pants!

I too go a bit nutty when it’s tartan season at J Crew. Even this year when my transitional space is limited....

I've had the exact same J Crew fit issues as Carla describes: legs way too tight no matter how many sizes up I go; sleeves/shoulders constricting even when there's a lot of extra space in the torso. I *loved* J Crew 15 - 20 years ago. Most of my "special" pieces in high school/college were from J Crew: knitwear, outerwear, even some cords and khakis. It was one of the only brands I'd buy new and even pay full-price for sometimes. I gave up on them a couple years ago (probably around 2018, like Carla) after some subpar customer service experiences at the local store.

And somehow your J Crew items manage to look so consistently smashing on you, Suz! I think you must have a very good eye for which pieces will work for you, and those pieces align really well with your style.

Wow Suz, what a great haul. I love the plaid pants especially. I immediately went and looked to see if they had a darker version (more like Bijou’s jacket) for me. I lust after plaid pants. I love the velvet and lace shirts too. Go luxe for Christmas!

@Suz - although size-wise I would be included I’m less a ‘tube’ and more an ‘oval’ - if that makes any sense! Although 37 inches around the fullest part of my hips, I’m 14inches from hip bone to hip bone, and I have a long, flat butt! Thighs are 21in and calves 13.5. I photograph slim from the side, but broader from the front! Admittedly I last gave Crew a go in 2018, but at the time I found the patterns cut for what I call ‘narrower’ physique and I couldn’t get my calves past the knees and down the legs of the pants! So disappointing to pass by all the cute coloured jeans and chinos!

I tried their classic jackets, and some shirts but the shoulders were tight and arms ridiculously short. Same with T-shirts and sweaters.

I enjoy the shop windows, but rarely go into the stores these days. Well, I don’t go into any stores these days....

Carla isn’t the only one with J Crew fit issues . It’s the main reason I decided not to pull the trigger on my fat little shopping cart last week . Pants and jeans are NOT cut for those us with curvier figures . I truly believe their fit model is an ultra slim and straight hipped ,ellipse of some kind . Same goes for the shirts : if you have anything more than a very very small chest and/or rib cage - they don’t work . The only thing I have ever found that I can wear are knits - and that’s regardless of what size I’m wearing at any given time .
