(Really we man the grills and bring desserts while the kitchen people do the real work, but they humour us.) We usually pick a theme, and this year it was red and white for Canada's 150th birthday coming up soon.</p> <p>I planned on a red top with summery white bottoms to show off red laced ballet flats. We've scarcely had warm weather and the forecast was for rain, so I chose long sleeves and full length cotton/linen pants that I cuffed a bit to show the laces.</p> <p>It turned out I was standing in a downpour, with rain cascading from the eaves, bouncing off the umbrella and the barbecue lid, and splattering my legs with muddy water. So my afternoon patients got a full view of the shoes, with soggy bottoms rolled out of the way. (I actually prefer this proportion, but they wouldn't stay rolled when they were clean and dry.)</p> <p>As for the flats -- I've had them for a couple of years. They're a wee bit long so tend to slip off when I walk. Last summer I had a bright idea and bought ribbon to attach laces, but went no further. Till this spring, prepping for my New York trip with no time to spare, and realizing that laced flats weren't going anywhere for a while. I couldn't even find the ribbon! This is ribbon-like knitting yarn from the Dollar Store, passed through a single loop of thread on the back of the shoe. It's fooled everyone so far. </p>
