I'm pretty much a textbook rectangle, and I'm glad to see that everything mentioned has made its way into my closet without me even realizing it!
my general rule thumb has been:
higher hemlines (I got nice legs, might as well show them off right?)
tailored, fitted clothing
if its not fitted, it better have some definition around the waist (with a belt or naturally)
detail and volume on the top or on the bottom, just not on the middle (I don't even know what shape middle volume would make me... a squoval?)
anyway, those are my two cents.

I'm rectangle with pear tendency (behind profile is curvy, but my front view is quite straight). Tops and dresses are hard to fit for my broad ribcage. For example, my favorite dress is a size 12, just to fit my ribs, but I had to have inches taken off of the bodice, and the skirt is a loose fit (though not meant to fit that way, it does look nice).

pants --- slim fitting straight legs or trousers (not wide), clams and bermudas

skirts --- a-line, pencil, dropped waist with pleats, all hemmed to mid-knee. Skirts are my easiest item to fit.

tops --- knits seem to fit my ribcage better than button-downs. However, I love button-downs when they fit right. I love sleeveless styles for my broad shoulders, and details (like gathers, pleats, collars, v-neck, scoop) at the neckline to draw attention away from my waist. I like my new banded top purchased this summer. I like ruching on the waistline

dresses --- I only have a few but my favorite is an empire with a fitted sleeveless, high necked bodice and a looser fit, without gathers, knee-length skirt. My least favorite is a sleeveless shirtdress with belt. Just seems to add bulk to my middle. I just thrifted a merino knit wool sleeveless sheath and hope to figure out how to wear that.

My favorites right now are tunic tops with skinnies. I also like button-down shirts, vests, fitted jackets, belted trenches. I do wear v-necks, but only layered over something with a collar. I don't have any voluminous tops (yet!) and I don't wear skirts and dresses very much, but it's also something I need to explore when I get an opportunity. :)
I rarely belt (except for jackets and trenches), and I don't like empire waists - they usually don't do much good for my broad ribcage. I do have a few exceptions, of course.

Dresses: sheath and some straight shirtwaists worn belted
Pants: Jeans and clamdiggers that are skinny or straight, especially with flap rear pockets to give more shape there. I try to keep other slacks to a fitted narrow look. Leggings.
Tops: fitted buttondown shirts, often worn belted high (my very favorite is a BR consigned striped shirt on which the back flares out a bit peplum style); cropped jackets and cardies, long lean cardies belted, and banded voluminous tops. Waistcoats that are fitted but flare out a bit at the bust. Sweet Pea tops with mandarin or shawl collars and some waist area ruching.
Skirts: pencil skirts, some a-line, dropped waist with pleats or a little gathering that starts low.

I'm a curvy rectangle (use to be hourglass until kids and midlife hit!). My go-to look is volume on top, slim on bottom.

On the bottom I usually wear leggings, skinny, or bootcut jeans. I like the following types of tops: tunics, banded, knot , waterfall/cascading, empire, ruched waist: basically anything that doesn't cling to my midsection but not so billowy that I look pregnant.

I don't wear skirts, but love dresses of the following types: sack, princess-seamed, kimono-style, empire, sheath.

That's a great list!

I like:

Sheath Dresses
A-Line Dresses (no v-necks)
Banded & Voluminous tops with skinnies or leggings
Round-neck tops
Sleeveless tops
Cropped jackets
Trench & swing coats
Fitted sweet pea tops (no wrap-tops)

I dress my boyish frame in very feminine styles to girl it up a little. And a nice bra with a little 'extra' has made a big difference for me!

Looking forward to more responses!

Hi Ladies, I'm curious what styles and outfit combos others with a rectangle-shaped figure are finding to be most flattering?

I'll start:

- banded tops with skinny jeans or leggings
- empire waist tops with no gathers below the bust
- princess seamed button down shirts that flare out
- full skirts
- wide legged trousers with fitted tops
- pencil skirts and a-line skirts
