Anne, I agree that 10 inches is pretty restrictive. I like the description you posted much better. I was thinking "approximately" 10 inches, but "approximate" means one thing to one person and one thing to another. What you posted is much more helpful.

Your measurements suggest that you have a nicely-balanced figure which should be easy to dress. It's difficult to be sure without a picture, but I'd say you are somewhere between a rectangle and an hourglass.
I agree with Anne that the 10" waist to hip difference that defines an hourglass shape is, perhaps, a little high. Read the guidelines, but follow your instincts as to which seem to apply best to your shape.

I would say you are probably closer to an hourglass shape

Hi Ayma,

I'm going to quote something forum member April said recently in a similar query, as it is so helpful

"I will say the same thing I always say when I see threads about body type: your measurements are not how you decide your shape, because measurements don't hold constant the thickness of the body. A person can have wide hips and a flat bottom or narrow hips and bottom that protrudes a lot and their hip circumference could be exactly the same.

Here's what you're after. You want to stand in form-fitting items, such as a stretchy cami and tights or leggings. You don't have to photograph it for us if you'd prefer not to, unless you're utterly flummoxed and want some input. Don't choose items that change your shape, just items that hug it. No pleats, or draping, or tailoring.

Rest your arms comfortably at your sides, or hold them ever-so-slightly out from your hips so it's clear where your hips end and your arms begin. Now, look at the relative WIDTH of your shoulders, waist, and hips. Forget the front-to-back measurements and don't get distracted by self-defeating thoughts like, "I wish I had Michelle Obama's upper arms," or "I wish my belly area was flatter." Set all that aside for one moment and let yourself only focus on your two-dimensional shape.

If your shoulders are your widest point, you could be an inverted triangle, a rectangle, or an apple. How can you tell -- well, on the IT body, the shoulders are noticeably wider than everything else. On the apple, the whole upper body is kind of all overall wider than the lower body (in other words, it's not only the shoulders.) And on the rectangle, that's also true, just that rectangles tend to be more "straighter" and/or more angular than apples.

If your hips and/or thighs are obviously your widest point, you're a pear.

If your hips and shoulders are roughly the same and you can see a definite waist, you're an hourglass. If your waist is so tiny it's hard to fit, you're almost certainly an hourglass. (Not all hourglasses are voluptuous and curvaceous like Christina Hendricks on Mad Men.) You might be a pear too -- keep comparing your hip width to your shoulder width to make that determination.

The ITs, apples, and rectangles have hardly any visible waist definition. And we tend to hate that!

Also, keep repeating to yourself: There is no "right" body type. There is no "right" body type. There is no "right" body type..." "

Gigi - I think that "10 inches" guideline is a bit restrictive in YLF practice at least. There have certainly been lots of people deemed hourglasses who didn't have that.

Also, it is hard to use celebrities. Here are some non-celebrity examples (from another site, which has a slightly different system) of 2 types of rectangles

I think you should try measuring width, not circumference. Cuz it's really a visual thing. 35 and 34 are so close, I think you're more likely hourglass..,

What is the measurement difference between your waist and hips? I think that something around ten inches qualifies as an hourglass.

Trying to find my body shape because I've been trying to wear clothes that will look nice on me. My measurements are 34-27-35. Every site I go to either says I'm a pear or a rectangle. I know I'm not a pear, but a rectangle? All the celebrities I've seen with the body type are actual rectangles, have abs and stuff, also have a flat chest and bum. I'm a 34D-DD and have a bit of a bottom; also my waist does go in a bit. I feel like rectangle is too boyish for me but I could be wrong. Someone help
