Yes, Ginger, they are nice and opaque, and are made well. Technically I don't fit in to either size range (above the height for the S/M but under the weight for the M/L) but I like the M/L.

Look for tights that are 80 denier or higher (denier is a measure of opacity). And if you're on the border between sizes, size up. I find tights are more likely to slide down because they are too small than because they are too large.

Hue Super Opaque are genuinely opaque over my thighs. (Do not get the regular Hue Opaque by mistake--despite the name, they aren't opaque at all).

ETA: The Hue Blackout tights you posted are 100 denier, which should definitely be fully opaque.

Sock Dreams has an "opaque" collection on their tights page.

Some of them are more or less opaque, depending on sizing, etc. but they have good info and lots of pictures of people with different size legs so you can see. & their customer service is excellent -- you can email them with questions & they will help you find what you need.

These black high rise Zella leggings from Nordstrom are amazing but not cheap (if you need 5 pairs). Adding in case anyone else is on the hunt. Super opaque in my experience (and some reviews specifically cite this quality on curvy thighs).

TWD, that is very helpful indeed! I think my favorite fleece-lined tights are Apt. 9, though they're bright blue. Probably an impulse clearance purchase. :p Sounds like I need to check them both out again this year. Good to know about the Commando ones, too. Thanks!

Banoffi, I'm really curious about the Commando waistband/yoke. I've had mixed experiences with that style in the past. Either they're brilliant and work perfectly for me, or they stretch out at the upper edge and/or the seam ridges through my clothing. I think I'll just have to try them and see if they'll work. Zappos won't take worn items, though, so I may need to go through Nordstrom.

Brooklyn, I think I saw some like that last year! They sound really marvelous. Sometimes I wear fleece-lined footless tights with Smartwool socks; it's very comfortable and the wool keeps my toes from getting cold and clammy.

Joy, I loved fleece-lined tights! They would be too warm for some weather (like now), but they're my favorites when it's cold. Do you have any recs? I don't have a favorite pair right now.

Karie, I've heard of those. Are they really opaque? My thighs are quite large and I assumed those tights were good for basic color, but not intended to be totally blackout/opaque. It looks like the sizing may run small, and I'm close to the upper end of the range.

I love the Commando Ultimate Opaque Matte Tights. At $36 they are slightly over your $30 cap, but I've found them to wear well and the waistband is very comfortable.

I was going to recommend the Kohls ones! Hopefully he 2016 batch are good. I had great luck with the Apt9 fleece lined tights a couple seasons ago. Last season I bought some tights off amazon-- no name I recognized, but loads of good reviews-- and was very happy with them. Of the ones you listed in finds, in my experience the commando ones won't be completely opaque above the knee.

I don't have any specific recommendations from this part of the world, but last winter I did try out the tights that have an inbuilt sock in them for wearing with boots. What a revelation! More comfortable than regular tights on the foot (the sock provides a slight cushion) and more durable in the toe area. I am never going back. Worth looking out for.

Joy, actually, they did it immediately. I never put tights in the dryer, and go several wears between washes. These stayed stretched out even after a wash and air dry, several times. I put the older pair in the dryer finally in desperation to see if anything would help, like how jeans do shrink back a bit. It did work somewhat, but it's not a long term solution. Hence my inquiry for recommendations.

Whatever you get, Don't dry them in the dryer. The heat will ruin the elastic. That may be the problem with the ones you own.

I'll be watching. I usually go with sized up thick black tights from Target. I find going up a size gets me more rise and more opaque, but they do sometimes bag at the knees or ankles.

The first cool front of the fall has truly arrived! It's inescapably time to find some better blackout tights. Along with leggings, blackout tights are a staple of my wardrobe because they allow me to wear shorter skirts and dresses/tunics with decency. "Blackout" is important because tights that are acceptably dark on my slender calves often become sheer above the knees.

I found the Apt. 9 Blackout tights at Kohl's last year. They are truly opaque, thick but not hot, very stretchy but fit my long legs without falling down, and nice high top. I really do love them, except that the moderate control top stretches out in a day. I've never had tights do that! It's really a bummer because when new (or straight out of the dryer!) they feel terrific. Smooth and snug without binding. But I have two pair and they're both like that.

Criteria:
* Solidly black, even over quite curvy legs
* Smooth line. That means a "high" waist (my rise is 16" in back). Snug enough to hug my waist without sliding down into a muffin top or pulling at the crotch.
* Not too expensive. Ideally under $30/pair, since I will need multiples. (I'd be willing to pay more if they turn out to be Magic and work perfectly.)

I found a couple of options at Nordstrom. Both have mostly good reviews, with a few reviews from people who despised them. So it's hard to tell. I know it's really subjective! But I figured I'd ask before I ordered 6 pair. (I will also try the Apt. 9 tights again, since they tend to tweak the design from year to year.)
