Thanks everyone for the input, I'll have to do some shopping. My problem with duvet covers seem to be worse with higher thread counts. The higher, the smoother the surface and more slippery, and also cooler to the touch against skin, which not for winter. Nothing worked against my 400+ tc down comforter, not even a jersey knit cover. All my duvet covers have button or tie, so they don't fall out, but every few days I have to find corners of the comforter and the cover and realign. I have been using comforter without cover. I just need to find a winter grade comforter maybe with some texture on the fabric so it's not cool against the skin in colder weather.

I'm glad to see the question and everyone's input. I have been happy with Lands End, but I've always been lucky to find what I needed at one of their Inlet stores.

I need to replace now and can't bring myself to pay full price. If you *are* then I'm adding my vote for LE.

BJ - are these the Costco ones you're referring too?

I like what we've bought from Pottery Barn, Restoration Hardware, and Garnet Hill. Macy's Hotel line is also nice.

Don't bother with sheets from Select Comfort (the sleep number bed people) -- they pilled badly.

We have a nice soft set of bamboo sheets for our guest bed, but I'm darned if I can remember where they came from. It may have been Garnet Hill.

And in a related topic, I love our towels from Restoration Hardware -- I think once we redo our bathrooms, I'm replacing all our towels with RH ones!

I also like the quality of The Company Store's products. I currently have really pretty quilts on two of our beds from there. Both of them are thick, soft and colorful. They have more contemporary designs in quilts which are often more country looking from other sources.

When it gets colder, I add a 'down alternative' blanket under the quilt.

i really like the costco-sourced ones. great thread count egyptian cotton in different earth tones (we have them from a beige to a mocha shade). all washed superbly, getting softer with each wash. some have gotten so soft and slippery, i slide around too much during the night!

I can tell you not to bother with Trina Turk. We bought a duvet cover in that brand, and it did not wash well at all. Just one wash, and it looks horrible. So I am also in the market... yet again. Sigh.

I agree that white is the easiest color to find but I want something different than white. I want something with a pattern.

I can vouch for The Company Store -- their quality is *amazing.* That's what we have for the girls' rooms. I am just not thrilled with their color/pattern choices. But the quality is fabulous. Restoration Hardware is also good (that's what we have in the guest bedroom) -- but pricey. Pottery Barn is hit-or-miss. (That used to be my go-to brand).

My friend found a lovely duvet/matching sheet set at Target which launders just fine, so do give that a try as well.

As for how to get the duvet from sliding around, to be honest, I've found it is a matter of having a quality comforter. Ours has gotten a bit lumpy so I'm planning to replace that as well. Ties or snaps definitely do help; I wouldn't buy a duvet cover without them. If you are handy you can sew ties into your own duvet (my mom always does this.

As for materials, go with cotton, for sure, or at least make sure the side that is going next to your skin is cotton. Because you're not supposed to use a top sheet with a duvet.

I've used duvets for years and found that you need to check out different lines because the duvets can vary so much from year to year. That said, I do think that LL Bean has some dependable options as does Bed, Bath, and Beyond; Pottery Barn; and some department stores.

If you are looking for a synthetic fill, try looking for one that seems to have a bit of firmness in the padding. That usually means a thicker batting which equals more warmth. And don't be afraid to launder a duvet if it seems to be getting thin in spots. Depending on the size of your washing machine, you can do this at home or, if it's a king-size duvet, in a commercial machine. You can do this with both down or synthetic duvets but make sure to use just a small amount of low-sudsing detergent in the wash cycle and follow with an extra rinse cycle to make sure all the soap gets removed. Use a dryer (either home or commercial) on medium heat to dry the duvet and throw in a clean tennis ball (or 2) while drying to keep the batting or down from clumping. I usually finish by air-drying for a day or two before putting the duvet back on the bed. Washing can completely restore a duvet to its original condition.

My sister opted for using 2 single-sized duvets on her king-sized bed to make it easier for her to wash the duvets in her home machine. Works very well.

The key to keeping a duvet in place is to make sure the cover is the same size, or even a bit smaller, than the duvet so the duvet doesn't slide around inside. Some covers (and duvets) come with snaps or ties that you can use to keep the duvet in place, but I've never found that I needed them.

Duvet covers can be found almost everywhere these days, but I look for a silky smooth, washable cotton because we don't sleep with a top sheet--just the duvet. My duvet covers get washed every week when I change our bedding. I like white duvet covers and second Angie's recommendations. I've also found Pottery Barn and LL Bean a good source for covers. These two companies offer a range of fabrics (including flannel covers which are cosy in the winter) and patterns if that is more towards your taste.

I'd head off to Bed, Bath and Beyond for the duvet itself (comforter). They have excellent options for allergies.

If you love white sheets like we do - Restoration Hardware. Or Macys Hotel Line. Or Nordies Egyptian Cotton. I do not dabble in anything but pure white linen - so if that is not your thing, I hope that others chime in

Is there "the" goto brand for comforters? Seems like any designer has a Home line nowadays. Any particular material recommendation and anything to look out for?

I'm looking for a nice and warm one for winter. I have a down feather one but allergy is getting worse, and it's also gotten a lot thinner.. I also had a Wamutsa from Linen-n-Things back then, can't say I'm impressed except for the print. :D

Also, any tips and tricks for holding a duvet in place? I'm totally deficient in that area...
