Thanks for the wisdom, ladies. They are from Benetton. Couldn't find reviews. And styling was noncommittal (white tee). They were called 'trousers'... so took a chance and ordered them. They were nice and as expected (not super luxe but not gear), but going back as the size was wrong (the site had inches instead of cms in error) and it was the last piece.

Fit is key. Fabric drape is important. And purchasing upsacle track pants from a fashion house helps quite a bit too.

Reviews might be helpful, too, Mandipa, since people often comment about fit and fabric.

I'd look also at fabrication. The gear pants should be made primarily for function. The fashion version will be made so that it drapes in a particular way. There is some crossover, I think, and you might be able to "get away" with a particular pair in either direction.

You can also tell by how they are styled in the photos. And by how they are categorized in the online store.

It's hard to tell nowadays just from the photo - some gear pants from Lulu and Karma, I would not feel bad about crossing over into daily life. Are the brand names available? You might be able to Google and see if the brand is gear vs. fashion. If not, it's probably safer to pass and stick with trusted brands and sellers, as PMC said above.

I think it a bit difficult online. I would tend to look at brands you've trusted/had success with in the past.

When you have just a flat photo with minimal styling and fabric composition... how do you tell upscale tracks apart from a stylish versio of those parachutish gear pants? Are there details you would look for?
