Lots of people I volunteer with have shared similar stories about treating their carpal tunnel (surgery/magnets/braces/PT either helped enormously or made it worse). It's so true that everyone is different!

If I took care of the bunion and maybe even treated the neuroma, I still have the issue of overly long second toes. I guess I could live with that one if they others could be better managed.

DD's room mate had bunion surgery in college, and the recovery was quick but I'm assuming the reason was because she was young. My SIL had bunion surgery, and it was a nightmare probably because they hadn't taken into consideration that she'd taken prednisone as a child and it had no doubt affected the integrity of her toe bones. It wasn't healing, pins pulled out, and she needed a second surgery and refuses to have surgery on her other foot.

In short, everyone is different. YMMV.

My Aunt recently had the surgery, having put it off and putting up with painful feet - she is thrilled with the results and is back walking everywhere and travelling. She is in her late 70's and now wishes that she did not put off having the surgery. I have bunion bumps on my feet and if my feet are painful, will take the plunge to have the surgery, notwithstanding that the recovery period and rehab will take time.

April, I have no wisdom to share, and empathize with your foot issues. They are awful, and debilitating. Wishing you the best of luck and strength. xo

Thank you all for these updates!

There is a podiatrist right here in New Canaan. People seem to love her and it seems like my first step should be Irina's Talking with Docs channel, second step to make the podiatry appointment already and see what's what. I do have a painful neuroma on the same foot so perhaps that could be addressed simultaneously.

I didn’t know I had bunions until my mother made a comment about my feet when I was in my 30’s. My feet looked like my dad’s and my mom’s feet. My two brother’s had bunions as well. I thought that’s what feet looked like! So, the genetic argument makes sense.

After the comment from my mother, I asked my doctor about them at my next regular appointment. He was a runner and he knew I was a runner. He said the surgery could affect my big toe mobility and there was a chance I might not be able to run afterwards. He said if they didn’t bother me (ie hurt) there was no medical reason to have them ‘fixed’. I have zero discomfort and no toe crossing. I wasn’t self conscious about my feet until mom made an issue about them.

My mother had bunion surgery, and afterwards developed hammer toes, and had to have more surgery for that condition. I only knew one other woman who had the surgery. She said she didn’t/couldn’t run after the procedure, but was able to return to easy running up to 5 miles after two years. She had no regrets about having the procedure.

Though there are lots of improvements in the surgery and surgical outcomes, I don’t think there’s getting away from the fact that it is a painful procedure, and recovery is long.

Yes I too understand they are / can be genetic . My mother had the very same issue as I . And the aging comment is simply my own opinion, and of course a 20 year old doesn’t look older because of it .

I'm no expert, but I always thought bunions were genetic. My sister had bunion surgery at the end of high school despite never having worn ill-fitting or high heeled shoes. I've never had them, despite years of wearing shoes I shouldn't have.

Either way, I wish you well. Unfortunately, any second-hand experience I have with the issue is many years old, and I am sure things have changed since then.

I have to disagree that “nothing makes you look old like a bunion”- I had a 20-year old get them once. It’s mostly genetic though certain shoe styles don’t help.
Sadly April I do agree that I believe it is a painful surgery. Of course the pain relief straight after surgery these days is much better with the pumps (also known as patient controlled analgesia or PCA, here, not sure if you have the same name there). Irina has a good idea re You Tube. Surely there would be improvements since 2013?!
Can they operate on any other of your foot issues?

There are advances in the field of bunion surgeries. The operations now are less invasive and recovery time is shorter. I follow news in this area from time to time as this surgery is in my future for sure.

I follow YouTube channel Taking with Docs, they are surgeons from Ontario and they did an episode on bunions surgery. Highly recommend, also for other health and wellness related topics.

Following with interest. Everything I hear puts me off the idea as recovery sounds brutal and long. Mine probably doesn't qualify anyways but I obsess over how unsightly it is. Nothing makes you look old like a bunion (or yellow teeth).

Hey YLF - I went looking for this topic in the archives and could only find such posts from a long time ago.

I'm sure the surgery, the recovery, and the shoes you can wear afterward have all changed since the thread I read, which was from 2013.

So - any recent experiences you can share? Worth the recovery or not? I can already only wear very specific types of shoes so I'm not concerned at all about giving up dainty sandals, heels, etc.
