Trust me, that way only leads to misery. An amazing deal is ONLY a deal if you can actually use it, if you can't then it's actually a waste of money.

Repeat after me...

Dress the body you have now!

Is it a great deal if you can't really wear it? How realistic is a weight loss of about 10 pounds in the foreseeable future? Are you sure you will lose weight in the right places? I have a fancy cardigan in my favourite colour red. It fits me beautifully in the waist now, but my bosom is still too ample...

Ah yes. I used to do this too.
I highly discourage it, though, Marianna because that jacket will be a constant reminder and pressure to you to lose weight.
Also, something I didn't consider before is that for that jacket to fit, the rest of your clothes won't.
So if you WANT to lose weight to be healthy that's great, but I wouldn't lose weight so one jacket would fit.
Also, like Khris said, once I finally lost weight (and could fit in the "little" clothes I'd bought and saved) I realized they didn't work well on my body and my tastes had changed.
Food for thought.

Thinking of Angie's recent post about wear it now or save it for later....I say return it. If you do loose the weight you are thinking of, wouldn't you want to purchase something new to celebrate the weight loss? I get tired of items in my closet, even when they go unworn, because I still see them. They loose the "new" feeling. I think it's better to pick up something you can feel fab in right now, instead of having something that has to sit.

Marianna, I would say that as a policy, it's not a good idea to buy something that doesn't fit right now. But this particular item was an incredible deal, and you already bought it, so it might be an exception. If what it cost and the closet space it will take up are not hardships, I would give myself a time limit on how long I could keep it without wearing: "If I haven't been able to wear this jacket by the time the hot weather comes back to Arizona next April, it will go on eBay."

As long as you don't end up with a closet full of exceptions, I think it's okay for rules to be flexible.

Post a photo and let us see it on you:). Otherwise if it's really too small either return it or gift it to someone (or sell it). If it were me it would bring huge disappointment every time I saw it hanging in my wardrobe knowing I couldn't wear it

Return it. Right now, it's your jacket, but only as a decoration to your wardrobe. Are you actively loosing weight now? are you enrolled or in the middle of a diet/lifestyle change/WW/etc? If not, that jacket is not the motivation you need. Most people feel they "need " to lose some pounds, but are generally ok with them so don't make and generally don't need to make the effort right now. You should buy something that you love on yourself, that makes you love you RIGHT NOW. I say it's ok to keep some things you actually wore , in the hopes you might wear them again, but don't waste money and emotions on things that you can't wear now. It's not good for your wallet/self-esteem. You are perfect right now, do you want to start dieting because of a bargain sale?
That being said, that jacket can make an awesome gift. I remember i received a leather jacket that exact colour when i was 16, from a neighbor. I couldn't have afforded such thing, and it was a very kind gesture.

I understand your dilemma, Marianna.
I'm not good judging jacket fits, and other ladies already made very good points.

Something else to consider, and this is something which sometimes helps me decide: where you tend to gain or lose weight. For example, my bust size size and shoulder size doesn't seem to change as I lose or gain weight (although I've never changed more than 10lbs as an adult). For me the variable areas are legs and waist. I think it's related to one's overall build and body type.

If you can wear it unzipped, I'd consider it a keeper.

If not, take the 30 days to decide. Maybe the thrill of owning it will wear off and returning it will be easier to let go of.

If you DO keep and never use, you can probably at least get your $$ back via ebay or craigslist or something, but you will have spent time and energy on it also. . .

M, I think I have this jacket in black. And it is fab. But so are you, just as you are. This is a slippery slope and is not a good reason to lose weight, in my opinion. I would separate the jacket issue from the weight loss issue. It's a great deal, with not a lot of money spent, so why not just keep it?. If you decide you want to lose weight for other reasons, then lose the weight and enjoy the jacket. If you don't lose weight, there are still lots of options for selling or gifting the jacket.

Marianna, I can understand your delima, that is a gorgeous red leather jacket if I ever saw one. I've been in this situation before myself. I think that we have to learn from Angie to admire some things on other people. Your perfect jacket will come along. You don't need to lose weight to make this one work. I think you are gorgeous just as you are and heaven forbid you lost weight to fit this jacket and then your wardrobe doesn't fit.
Maybe you could give it as a gift to someone else. It would look spectacular on you, I do admit.

I've done this, and generally it's a bad idea but I do think it can work if you are actively in the process of losing weight and the delta between where you are and the garment isn't that far, or the money is so negligible that you won't care if you end up giving it to the thrift store in a few months either way.

I echo the idea of ebay-ing, if you are into that - surely you could get significantly more than what you paid for a nice leather jacket like that.

I used to do this: Buy things that are too small. But I'd never wear them. By the time I'm "that size" i don't really like the item anymore. I say return

Is that Steven Madden? If so, I have that same jacket in purple. I also bought the red but it was too "bricky' for me so returned it.
I LOVE this jacket... the leather is so buttery soft.

I guess there is no harm to keep for 30 days. By then I think I'd return rather than keep to try to sell on e-bay... e-bay is a pain in the butt.

I did this with about six or seven items of clothing a few years ago. It was the winter of 2009, and Saks had a HUGE sale--they were selling stuff at 75% off (and more). I purchased a Burberry satin trench, a Marc Jacobs cashmere sweater dress, a Roberto Cavalli top...you get the idea. I had gained some weight and none of it fit. Now it all does, and I am so happy I held onto them all. I know most people will say return, but I'll say keep. If you lose the weight, you'll be thrilled. If you don't, you can probably ebay it for what you spent anyway.

At the *very* least, hold onto it for through the return window and see how the weight loss is going.

Hmmmm. I must say I have also done this with minimal success.

Hmm, I did just this with a DKNY polka dot sundress this summer that was $11 instead of $78. It zipped up, but didn't really 'fit'. I ended up returning it, quite reluctantly. In the end, I'm glad I did. I already have 2 dresses and one pair of suede pants that barely fit me, and so I never wear them. I always go for something more comfortable, and honestly more flattering, because it actually fits! Unless you really really get serious with weight loss efforts in the 30 day timeframe and see results, I'd return.
