Diane, I agree with your thoughts on the hair style. I prefer the waves for being a little mussy, or carefree looking. I think I'm managing to keep my wardrobe within the limits of what I'll wear, too. Maybe I have a fantasy life, for which I'd need other clothes. But the clothes I have seem to suit the life I have--and that was not always the case. YLF has helped me a lot with that achievement.

Thanks, DEB!

Summer, good point! As long as my style isn't fighting against my features, I can be content with my leanings. Or maybe I'll straighten my hair once in a while, if I want a change. It's fun to examine through the Kibbe lens.

kkards, I think the main thing that's more dramatic about #1 is the darker color scheme and/or slightly higher contrast in the colors. I was trying to go for a sharper look, too, with the straight lines of the print in the tee and the pointy shoes. But these elements may not equal "drama." I'm not sure myself. I can see how the look is more formal, for sure.

Beth Ann, thanks for your kind thoughts. It seems to me I'm most comfortable in a balance of classic and arty elements. If I go overboard in one or the other, I feel a bit off. Too arty and I feel a little costumed. Too classic and I feel dull.

Dixie, thanks. I would wear outfit 1 with wavy hair. It surprised me that I really like the straight lines of the tee with straight hair, though. Food for thought!

approprio, thanks! I agree, hair and eyewear can change so much about our appearance. My new glasses (which I'm wearing 99.9 pernet of the time) are probably more dramatic classic than my previous rounded frames in a muted brown.

E, thank you!

Firecracker, this is a lovely post! Isn't it amazing how something that seems like a detail can radically change your overall appearance in ways you didn't anticipate, particularly hair and eyewear. Then you have to figure out what's happened and work around it. I've found Kibbe's a nice template for this.

Anyway. You look as lovely as ever in both pictures, although the second does seem more you.

Like Angie said, both outfits are really similar so good for you! I don't think you look "too formal" in the first oufit. I think that style looks natural on you. I love black and somewhat "monochrome" outfits. Maybe it would look more natural with your curly hair.

Love both looks, Sharan! I understand the need to play with "style types," Kibbe or otherwise, periodically. I think the look in #1 would look fabulous with your usually wavy hair, too!

I've always felt the "artistic eclectic" elements in your look are stronger than the classic. This certainly suits your lifestyle, but I also think it works well on your frame. You have mastered lots of texture and drape without overwhelming your shape ---- quite an accomplishment!

i love both versions! its interesting that you've called #1 more dramatic, because that's not a vibe i would have attributed to this outfit….to me it reads more formal than the reality outfit. but i probably don't understand the difference, i know that i totally don't get Kibbe. i tried one of the online quizzes, and i was completely lost!

I found your thought process very interesting, and I love both of these outfits. What struck me when reading this post was that resources such Kibbe , while useful, are just a small part of the whole story. You have a clear preference for artier clothes, and your curly hair is part of your signature style - though it looks equally good straight. No need to change as far as I can see.

Interesting. Both outfits are great. I do see a little softness in #2 perhaps. Your hair is nice like that, but I kind of think I prefer a few more natural curls, as they stop your hair from looking too 'done'. Love those jeans BTW!

ETA it's interesting that you say you're dressing just as you wish every day. I wish I felt a little more like that. I've done quite a few of the challenge posts and as you've gathered, I'm obviously a frustrated everyday dresser!

Both outfits are knock-stop-out-stop... while being almost identical in silhouette. Go figure. But it *is* interesting: the deep darks of #1 is high drama. Ya gotta be careful or you'll cut yourself! Ok ok. Just teasing!

The straight hair also changes things a lot. Your DC hair makes me think of, well, D.C. That is, D.C. done nice. D.C. hair is battle-ax hair, man... But I digress.

Shevia, thanks for the curly hair vote! It's definitely easier, and I've grown to like it, too. It has become part of my signature look, in my mind. I see myself as more angular than curvy, too, but also pretty balanced in a lot of ways. Hmm. . .SD: "bold and sensual" versus DC: "striking." Who knows? I could go either way, or both.

Chiara, I appreciate your grasp of the concepts. Thanks for your comment! I do have a couple of pairs of on-the-ear earrings. One of them I might actually wear again sometime--ha ha! It's so funny--I chose those dangly earrings because I thought they were "long-lined" and they have a square swirl for the "geometric" theme. Turns out they're just a little bolder, more polished version of what I usually wear. (I typically go for matte rather than shiny metal jewelry.)

I also really like the pumps with jeans, great DC look (the only non DC element is the hanging earrings, I think Kibbe always goes for earrings on the ear or spraying up for DC- maybe try the look and see what you think?).
It seems to me you favor quite a classic style, very elegant.

Interesting! I, of course, prefer your hair curly, but love both outfits and don't think they are very far apart. In Kibbe terms, you strike me as more yang (angular) than curvy. Could you be a SD? I find Kibbe interesting exactly because it is so superficial. I am always interested and surprised how people see me as opposed to how I see myself - Kibbe seems a way to access that information or at least give a vocabulary with which to start the discussion.

Karie, that's a great solution. If I had a place at work to stash stuff, I'd use the idea! On occasion, I do bring a change of shoes, just in case my feet need a break. So I could do that with pumps.

Angie and Daria, thank you. That's a great idea. I could switch to pumps, for fun, when we go out to dinner. We tend to go casual, like to pubs, but I would certainly wear outfit 1 to a pub.

Oh, and Angie, it seems Kibbe missed the boat by not including Elegant Eclectic! (Well, not really, as it doesn't seem to go with a specific body type--thank goodness!)

Aubergine, I think we are in good company with our thoughts on the Kibbe styles. Yet they offer an intriguing perspective. And I really like your hair wavy. I think it suits you so well.

This was interesting!

I really like both outfits. The first one does seem a little sleeker and more "uptown" than your usual looks, but the cool print of the top and the fact that the outfit still has lots of interesting subtle textures and details makes it still seem like you. Can see why you couldn't wait to break out the new jeans and want excuses to wear those pumps more, too!

I also relate to what you said about realizing your hair's natural waviness could be a style on its own, not just "something to tame into submission" -- that sounds very familiar to me! You look great with it both ways, though

For me too, dressing according to (what I think is) my Kibbe type would feel wrong for my personality and lifestyle. I'm guessing I'd be a Romantic, but dressing like that seems like it would be taking a bunch of stuff I like in moderation to an extreme, and I'd end up feeling like I'm in costume.

You look killer in those jeans, Sharan. WOW. I'm thrilled you aren't covering them up. They look AMAZING with the pumps. Please wear them - next time you go out to supper. Killer look.

And so is your reality outfit. Apart from the footwear and hair - not much difference between the two. You are living your fantasy style. Lucky you.

I love your hair like this - it's just as fab as the curls. Still quite wavy, and not stick straight.

You are an Elegant Eclectic.

I like both versions! I haven't read Kibbe's book, but I see you as a very artful dresser. Your outfits always have that arty flair to them which I love.

I love wearing my pumps too. In fact, I have three pairs of flats (black, brown, and nude) stashed away at work so I can wear my pumps but take them off for a bit when my feet get tired.

This post by Keturah got me thinking again about the Kibbe formulas for style types. I took the quiz again--and yet again, came up with Dramatic Classic. By which measure my body type and facial features are most harmonious with styles that are trim, tailored, sleek, angular, with long lines and geometric shapes. In fact, the only items on the quiz that deviate from A (angular/yang influenced) and C (classic, symmetric) answers are my blunt nose and my wavy hair.

The light bulb went on: what if I wore my hair straight (as I did for so many years, before I realized that my natural waves could actual be a "style," rather than something to tame into submission)? (Note: I did not consider changing my nose!) I gave straight hair a try this afternoon, and then tried to come up with an outfit that is a kind of Dramatic Classic (DC) fantasy style. I could have come up with something even more representative, I'm sure, but I wanted to stick with the skinny jeans, and I didn't want to cover them with a long layer, because they are new and I'm enamored with them!

Here are the fantasy and reality outfits (sorry, I didn't get a photo of the reality outfit with the reality hair--I got carried away and went straight for the blow dryer.)

1 (fantasy Dramatic Classic outfit): dark skinnies (Mother, The Looker); gray, ivory, and black hatchy-print tee (made by me); black boiled wool bomber jacket with pleather sleeves (Halogen); gray/pewter leather skinny belt; long, dangly earrings with a geometric swirl; black d'Orsay pumps (Vince); espresso and black satchel (Gryson, Natalie).

2 (reality outfit--imagine with my usual wavy hair): dark skinnies as above; gray, blue, and sage scroll print burnout knit tee (made by me); navy and gray birdseye knit sweater (Eddie Bauer); sage belt (Fossil); looped design marcasite earrings; taupe cutout booties (Kork-Ease, Stina); taupe shoulder bag (Aunts & Uncles).

I am not really a DC dresser. I don't like too much structure in my clothes; it just feels too formal for my lifestyle and personality. I am not sure what style I wear, in Kibbe terminology; maybe something like Soft Classic or Soft Natural. I think with my hair straight, many of my clothes look rather incongruous with my head. But I do kind of like the way the straight hair looks on my face. So maybe something of a style shift is in order.

In thinking about Angie's reality versus fantasy challenge this week, so far I've just come up with the fact that I wish I had more occasion to wear my fabulous pumps. I have three pairs. They are not very practical for my everyday life, but I love to wear them when the occasion arises! Otherwise, I pretty much dress as I wish each day.

Thanks for looking (and for reading if you've made it this far)! I welcome any of your thoughts and suggestions!
