Agree that the principle is excellent and a slightly smaller size might be better but can be tailored if that is not possible.

Preppy Pear, my hair is brown, so all footwear here is lighter, and I do wear some deeper gray in summer also, but with bare legs I tend to wear shoes with lower contrast to my legs, though I like black if ther is a lot of open area.
Rachylou, hmmm... maybe is sizing?
Liesbeth, thanks, I think I am on to something, if I could find the right version.
Thanks, Angie. I wish it would be easier!
The dress is sold out again but may come back.. again! Or this may be something they do a version of each year.

I'm liking the direction! Why not :)

I vote try a size down when it's available. Like the way you styled it in #1 and #2.

I do think this is the kind of dress you can wear both supercasual and out to a patio dinner. I like it and can imagine it looking even better in motion.

I like the idea of this dress and the ways you’ve styled it, but there’s something about the arm hole that bothers me... the slope of the angle in...

Really great dresses! I think I like the sandals better with the dresses on their own, because it’s lower contrast with all the solid black. That’s my personal preference, though I’m big on sneakers and dresses. For that reason, the dress with the top looks good with the sneakers to me. Do the sandals/sneakers bookend your hair?

Thank you for answering my question I have been avoiding anything that is racer back, so it is good to know that certain bras would be covered. I don’t own a sports bra and have had some bad experiences of trying to find one and be able to get it on. Hence my question.

Thanks, Suz. I think I will hold off on “ cutting tags” and check to see if XXS comes back.
I did have a kind of dress epiphany, in that dresses I used to think I would like- just seem “ too pretty “ for right now ( not never) , plus too hot outside ( whereas I was always dealing with a/c before) plus I am perhaps too picky about what sneaker- dress looks, or other very casual footwear, are comfortable and I feel are “ me”.
Because of that, I realize I haven’t really searched exhaustively for similar options, though I have looked a bit at other web retailers. Too short, too long, too straight, V- neck, wrong fabric...maybe this will be a HEWI.

Hi Joy. I am wearing a regular racerback sports bra, pretty minimalist, that I already had, and it is completely concealed under the shape of the dress. I haven’t tried layering another tank or T under but expect I could do something. I first wanted to see if it worked as- is to be in- fussy in hot weather.
This is XS- I would have liked to try XXS ( still would) but it was not available then nor now.

The SB dress looks breezy and easy to style. What are you doing to be able to wear the racer back? A special bra? No bra? A tank under it like the model? A regular bra and let the straps show?

Janet- thanks. This size and smaller are sold out( but could come back).. I agree it would be fun to try, to see if overall is “ less dress” but not so tight as to feel constricted.

lisa p, I agree it would be more flattering and breezy if a bit shorter. The bi- level helps ( hence comment about better with movement IRL), and it’s not a true maxi- dress. Here’s where petite sizing would have helped! Black isn’t what I think of so much for summer but has a place for avoiding see- through, water damp spots ( if wearing as a kind of coverup) .
I don’t see getting it hemmed as realistic, so I will have to decide about the existing length.

I love the SB dress, and it seems to fit you well, but strikes me as a tad too long. I think the front should be up nearer your knees (or just under) as per the store photo.

The first dress reminds me of my COS dress! Seems very breezy which is appealing.

I am also intrigued with the Sweaty Betty dress. My shoulders and back are not fantastic but maybe if it looked good otherwise I could suck it up and ignore that.

In part prompted by Angie's T-shirt dress post and other dress discussions...
So, first disclaimer is, I am not a big dress-wearer. At all. Except for special occasions, or sometimes at church. And with sheer hose or opaque tights depending on the season and occasion. Not for summer barbecues.
But I like the IDEA of wearing dresses. And I have a few friends who rock the summer sheath or shift dress look (though they all wear sandals or slides--a problem for me. But the current trend to wearing sneakers helps, though I think sandals almost always LOOK better.
So I went through my dress and skirts and did find a few items "real dresses' that I think I could wear with some of my sneakers or fisherman sandals.
But, now that my only encounters will be outside-distanced, in very casual setting (think rustic decks and yards, not elegantly appointed patios), even those look almost "too much" or, the fit and sleeves I collected are too hot for 90+ degrees.

So I looked at some items from Nordstrom. Find 1 was sold out but I thought it looked very interesting. Fiind 2 I got in smallest size and it still overwhelmed me, though it IS a very interesting cut, and the fabric is quite heavy, so back it went. Also, trying it kind of jolted me back to reality that if I were to add a dress at all, it needs to be practically a swim-cover/sport-type dress for me to feel at ease with the footwear and the likely setting and the heat.
Find 3 with pics is the Sweaty Betty racerback tank dress. Not something I ever would have thought of pre-pandemic or pre-retirement. But I had a black racerback bra already so gave it a whirl.
Sorry these pics were not cropped prior to starting this post but may go back and do some.
Further usual disclaimer--I think it looks better IRL due to the movement, which is good. Didn't realize from stock photo that it has a little flounce. At first I thought was too big in the bodice, and I should size down, but now I think if were smaller, I would lose the breeziness, plus being able to layer OVER something like a swimsuit. In this size it completely covers bra.
Pic 1 with sneaker, pic 2 fisherman, pic 3 pool sandal and short cardi, pic 4 with cropped T, for skirt-look.
I have avoided sleeveless for indoor dressing or for dressy occasions but have been getting more exercise and perhaps just wiser and am not so worried about my arms at this point, but especially not for outdoor deck-lounging in hot summer shade.

So, I think I would wear this this summer, but of course not every day, so the further consideration is, does it seem to have longevity as a travel/resort/pool/beach restaurant dress, if we are ever able to resume those activities? That is one thing that seemed possible.

Comments and suggestions welcome.
