Hadn't heard of this before, thought it was another pinup thread.

But yes:
heated steering wheel
chemical hamdwarmers in boots
layered scarves
layers of gloves (e.g. latex + fingertip'less wool + wristies with chemical handwarmers)
When driving. And not even at temps many here would consider "cold."

Ha, wristies now mentions Raynaud! http://www.wristies.com/mobile.....ctCode=20A

Hi Kat - I'm one of the people with Raynauds. The Uggs classic long gloves are my absolute favorites. I bought two more pairs this year. If it requires more than that I need to add handwarmers. But I have dexterity for driving and nothing has ever approached them for style and comfort. http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/ug.....8;cm_ite=u I could only find shorty. They seemed to be discontinuing them this fall (tears shedding) so I bought the last two pairs from uggs. I'm hoping they bring the style back in long but otherwise these seem close. Good luck on the hunt and never skimp - does not pay in the long run, you only end up with painful hands and a bag full of stuff for goodwill!!

Mittens! I use ski mittens and glove liners inside them. For driving, I crank the heat, which fortunately starts working quickly in my car, and I also use the little hand warmer packets when I do outdoor activities like running, walking the dog, or snow shoe/cross country skiing, etc. otherwise, my fingers hurt. Raynauds is painful!

Great advice from everyone! Interesting about keeping one's neck warm, I am already doing that (intuitively?) as it seems to help. Will check out these options. I also have used fingerless gloves for driving ... and layers, layers, layers! And sometimes just throwing fashion chic to the (cold) winds and wearing bulky ski mittens on coldest days.

I know, this is not a health site, but I have Raynaud's like symptoms (never been diagnosed) and it seems in my case to be directly related to low iron. Low ferritin to be exact. When my iron is up (eating enough iron rich foods) I can stand the cold, when I'm not (which is often because I prefer vegetarian) I get white fingers and toes in even mildly cold weather.

I don't have Reynauds per se but I do run very cold. I have a pair of ski mittens with a pocket for those little hand warmer things you can get at sporting good stores. I put them in my boots too when skiing, skating or snowshoeing. I would probably die of misery if my hands were always cold. I try never to let them get to the point of needing to be thawed out because it's so much worse than just staying warm. Mittens are so much warmer. I also clench my fingers regularly when doing outdoor activities to keep blood flow

These look useful:

I, too, get my worst Reynaud's when driving. (I always wear cashmere lined leather gloves to drive in winter...but get it anyway.) Maybe this partially explains why I feel it is so important to cover up my neck in winter! Interesting indeed.

I don't really have a great solution. Mittens if I am outdoors for any length of time; glove liners (these do help somewhat on days when I want to look okay but have to be out for a while -- I tend to keep them in my bag); lined gloves vs. unlined.

I tried a bunch of insulated down gloves and the like. None of them are anywhere near as good as mittens, so I don't really wear them much.

! am most bothered when driving the car. The cold steering wheel hurts my fingers, but if I wear mittens I can't grip the steering wheel properly, and get cramps in my hands from using the muscles wrong.

My default solution has been leather gloves, which I think of as my driving gloves, starting in late September. On a really cold morning, I will use a less-well-insulated travel mug for my tea, and switch hands with it as I drive.

Recently I was gifted a bulky knit pair of fingerless mitts that were too big for anyone else. They are pale pink--which is nowhere in my schema of black and white everything-- but I have worn them over my default red leather gloves (red is best, people will chase you if you drop one; I've lost more black ones than I can count) and also over the Radiant Orchid ones my daughter rejected as the wrong shade of purple. They seem to add some extra warmth without lessening my driving-grip, but we haven't had enough serious cold to be sure.

Other things to keep in mind: Raynaud's is centrally mediated, so what warms--or--chills your toes will affect your fingers, and vice versa. So, make sure your toes are toasty warm. And I have found running my hands under very hot water can make my toes stop hurting on a chilly morning. Also, neck warmth. There's some suggestion that a scarf or turtleneck--ie sealing in a warmer core temperature--will also signal that it is safe to send warm blood to your extremities. (For me, on the coldest driving mornings, it is long hair down and loose to insulate, or a fur scarf.)

When I don't have to drive... definitely mittens are warmer than gloves, because the fingers get to share the heat. One of the best is the kind of very warm fingerless gloves (warm wool, with only fingertips bare) with a foldover mitten to put on top. These work for occasional texting too. I got my son a pair at Eddie Bauer.

I have Raynauds, as does my Dad who lives in Pittsburgh. We use those disposable handwarmers to ward off the chill. Sometimes I just open one and switch it back and forth as I go along.
For running and walking, I find that gloves are impossible - fingers need to be together to stay warm. I have tried everything you can imagine! When I was still a runner (:( moment of self-pity...thanks), I would wear a pair of mittens that are essentially nylon windbreaker fabric on top of a lightweight fleece mitten. Warding off the wind is the key. Look on sites for running gear, I haven't bought any for a year or so.
Hope this helps.

I, too, suffer from cold hands and feet (in fact, I often had to wear gloves in the office as my hands would get so cold that I had to run warm water over them). Sometimes, you just have to toss fashion/style overboard for health, comfort and function. Yes, if you're going to a fancy party, you cannot or should not wear ski-mobile gloves. But usually you're not wearing stylish leather gloves for your fancy party for very long. But risking the possibility of permanently damaging one's hands, or being unspeakably cold and uncomfortable, I am going to sacrifice style for comfort/function every time. One option is to wear nice gloves under warm mittens, and pull the mittens off at the last minute.

I believe mittens are much warmer than gloves and toasty hand warmers are an excellent idea. Also, you can buy glove inners for extra insulation. Good luck.

KatK, I sympathize. I guess I have it too, because it doesn't even need to be very cold for my fingertips to go white. It drives me nuts because otherwise I warm up very quickly (when outdoors exercising for example). When I'm running, I wear a pair of lightweight gloves with a pair of Brooks windproof mittens (I also have a fleece liner for the mittens when it's bitter). But that's gear and not very fashionable.

I'm not wild about wearing mittens because they don't look very sophisticated, and they're hard to wear if you want to do anything with your hands, but if I'm going to be outside for an extended period of time in the cold, I just throw on those unfashionable mittens. Otherwise, I have been making do with beautiful (but not always terribly warm) lined leather gloves.

I'll be tagging along on your post with interest.

The boot information is great, I have Raynaud's and live in a very cold climate (Chicago) and it is a struggle to stay warm. My biggest problem though is keeping my hands warm in gloves/mittens that look chic but are also warm -- would love to see a posting on gloves/mittens for the snow and cold!
