Thanks for the advice, everyone. I'm glad I'm not the only one with this problem. A friend of mine who has experience with sewing told me that she thought that over time, the strands would knot up or something and the fraying would stop. But that's clearly not happening here.

I didn't hack these myself, FWIW. This is how they came from J. Crew.

Runs with Scissors, I will check out the Fray Block after I give my jeans a haircut!

My experience is like Marilyn's -- some continue and some don't! Thanks for asking the question because these are great suggestions and tips.

If they are continuing to fray I would sew a row of stitching above the fray to prevent it from going further. Some keep going, some don't. From my experience it depends on the denim. I have that issue with frayed Mother jeans. I learned my lesson with the first pair because they kept going and it wasn't even.

I trim my frayed jeans as I don’t like the hems to look too messy. My NYDJ crops are stitched to prevent further fraying. JBrands and Paige denim don’t seem to fray too badly despite not being stitched.

I have 2 hacked pair of jeans, and though I sometimes have to trim a long straggler, there haven't been any problems with a deepening fray. One pair was hacked in 2017 and the other last summer. They both have plenty of washes and I dry in a machine. It might just be the weave of the material?

I just checked my two pair of frayed jeans, and both were stitched. And, thanks for asking, as I’m ready to hack a pair myself!

It's unlikely the fraying will stop on its own. I would stitch around the bottom ... but then I have a sewing machine set up and ready to go!

There are products that stop fraying so I searched to see if any are recommended for denim. Found one suggested on a sewing forum where someone had asked this same question: Fray Block. Apparently, unlike Fray Check (which I have used) it isn't stiff when dry.
https://sewing.patternreview.c.....pic/107119

Again, I have no personal experience, but FWIW!

I have this happening with my wide leg crops from H & M. I gave them a haircut but have thought about stitching above the fray. My sewing machine is very old and unpredictable which is why I haven't done it, I hate to drag it out and then it won't co-operate. If anyone knows of anything that will help without sewing I'll be happy to try it !

In my experience with diy frays, they do keep fraying. Not sure which is better to do though to mitigate.

I bought a pair of raw-hem jeans from J. Crew that I love. There was just the right amount of fraying at the raw hem. However, I've found that as I continue to wash and wear them, the fraying is increasing, so it looks a little "fluffier" than I'd like. Should I just take a scissors and trim off the excess, and will it eventually stop fraying? Or do I need to have someone at the alterations department sew above the fraying to prevent it from continuing further? Or take some Fray-Chek to it (I used to use this for cross-stitching, but I'm not sure that that will survive the wash)?

I know very little about sewing so feel like a fish out of water here...
