Kdj and all...here's another article I ran into..."The Best Entry Level Raw Denim Jeans"...including the beloved 501's and also an $ 82.00 pair from Nordstroms...men's too, though... http://www.rawrdenim.com/2014/.....nim-jeans/

Amy, I looked those up your jeans...they are very nice! I hadn't heard of Rogue before and found this article about them http://www.rawrdenim.com/2013/.....s-jackets/ ...nice jackets too. I slept in mine at the very beginning too! It seems a good way to break them in, with the body heat. How long did mine take to soften?...well, I think it was a month maybe? Or six weeks? I went on a trip shortly after I bought them and purposely took them and only one other pair of jeans with me so I would have to wear them a lot. And I actually ended up wearing my raw one's nearly every day and at one point in the three week trip it occurred to me that I wasn't thinking about my jeans any more, they had softened up enough to forget about them Here's another post from Sophie's blog:http://www.lesantimodernes.com.....month.html about her raw jeans at one month, in case you or anyone else who is considering it is interested.

Judy, I'm hefty and didn't see women's raw jeans in large sizes, so went with men's. Rogue Territory's Stanton jean, in "stealth."

How long did it take for yours to start to soften? I've even (intentionally ) slept in them a few times.

Not to go too off topic of the raw denim, but if the idea of selvedge denim appeals to you, but you don't want the pain :), not all of them are raw, of course. The one's I've felt in person (Chimala) feel thick and like the old denim. Carried by Madewell, they have a few styles, here's one: https://www.madewell.com/madew.....ENE~1+2+21 And in searching, found a whole page at J Crew https://www.jcrew.com/search2/.....8&Nsr

I am with Rachy and Janet on this. I prefer trousers with a bit of give in them. They are more comfortable to me and I feel more flattering. And I am not really willing to break much of anything in anymore. Jeans, shoes, boots, whatever. I really want things to be comfortable when I first buy them or I won't wear them.

Amy K, did I miss what brand you ended up getting?

Currently I have the same pair that she has on in this post: http://www.lesantimodernes.com.....women.html a pair of unisex APC Petit New Standard that I got a year ago. It's a commitment, but it can be fun and like an ongoing wearable DIY project to see how the stiff denim creases into patterns as it conforms to your body...and gets an interesting patina. You've heard the "don't wash" probably, but I can attest to that. It totally changes the denim, so if you want the natural whiskering, don't wash before you get that. You can air out or spray the crotch with perfume very slightly or there's the "put in the freezer" method but I haven't tried that. It's also why one can buy them a BIT tighter, because they do stretch a little and the fit on the body helps the creasing...the blog link explores this well. Good luck, and enjoy your new denim project!

Well, these intrigue me because I love all things denim, and I love the look on other women, but I suspect I might be with Rachy on this one. I think I've gotten spoiled by jeans with *give*. Plus the raw denim styles rarely seem friendly to those of us with curvy lower halves -- the stiffness seems like it would have the potential to make me look wider in the thigh, which I so do not need.

I remember those jeans. Hard as rocks. You would wear them for a long time before washing so they would "know" your body. Actually we washed our jeans as little as possible. They lasted longer and faded better. Never put in dryer. And yes it could be painful.

Carter,

*Raw* denim is made of fabric that hasn't been washed/softened/finished. So you break it in yourself, old style. Usually it's 100% cotton.
http://www.artofmanliness.com/.....roduction/

The selvedge is the edge of the fabric as it's milled. (Firecracker and other textilistas can explain it better and how the edges differ with quality of fabric.) "Selvedge jeans" are cut with the outer leg seams running along that edge. That can be done with pre-washed/softened fabric as well. As far as I can tell it's a bit like surgeon's cuffs, not much function but people like to show it off.
http://www.rawrdenim.com/2011/.....all-about/

I bought black at BF's request (he gets veto power on new purchases because I wear the same garments almost all the time) and because black goes further in a very small wardrobe. They won't fade as dramatically as indigo jeans do.

Right now there's a whole lot of excess at the bottom. Attached picture isn't styled or intentional, was taken when trying on boots.

I remember in grade school all the kids wearing cardboard-like jeans the first few weeks of school. Of course, there was none of that wearing them for a ridiculous amount of time before washing them or anything like that. They were just plain jeans; that's the way they were sold then. It wasn't until I was at least in middle school that jeans came in different "washes".

I've considered getting raw denim again, but I'd want original Levis - none of the fancy alternative raw denim they charge hundreds for.

Always trying, I still buy Levi's 501 Original Shrink-to-Fit Jeans. I just don't like stretch of any kind in my denim, plus I'm a pocket gal. Women's jeans all seem to have shallow pockets, I'm afraid my keys will fall out.

alwaystrying, yes that's the kind. Thanks to Marmee's blog tip, I've found a local-enough store that has a selection of dry/raw denim, and will go down this week to see what they say.

These days I can get away with wearing the same pair of pants pretty much every day (yes, they get laundered) so it's a good time to be breaking in stiff denim.

I am just hoping one can buy anything at reasonable prices that does not have 2% spandex. I have an old pair of Levis that are 100% cotton that I still wear, but carefully as to preserve them. Recently found 100% cotton ankle pants at Bass outlet. bought one in denim and another in cobalt, that will be for the "casual" no jeans affairs, or just when I feel jeans may not be best to wear.

Are these jeans like the old denim that we had to break in, and once you did that you had a very comfy , perfect pair of jeans?-oldies on here may remember that..

I have wanted a pair of raw jeans for a while, but I fear finding them in a "curvy cut" is going to be the issue. There is a top raw maker here in town that I would LOVE to purchase from, they even use local mills to produce, but I'll be damned if these hips + behind ever get into a pair of straight from the mill "flat-Stanley" shaped jeans.

There was a bunch of selvedge on sale at the Gap yesterday - to me it looked out of place in this season of light washes and pastels. I guess I can't see past the current season and trends. Also, it's really a hipster-guy thing here, and trends aside, on a practical level it looked really hot and umcomfortable in the summer heat last year.

As much as I love denim, I'm surprised I haven't tried raw. I think I just haven't seen a pair yet. I'm stunned when I can find a pair without stretch, let alone no stretch no wash.

My stylist niece gave my brother a pair for Christmas and he looks amazing in them. That makes me want to try a slim fit straight legged pair for myself. Not skinny but not full on boyfriend either.

ETA -- the Tellason from Denimhunter's link is exactly what I mean. I'm not sure I could take a fitted high rise skinny in raw denim. Those Tellasons look great and they're made in San Francisco. Thanks for the links AmyK!

Gap's boyfriend jean washes this fall included selvedge denim that wasn't exactly raw but was more like I remember levis 501s being in my childhood. I think the boyfriend / relaxed jean trend might make raw denim a more compelling choice for women, because it's really too stiff for tighter jeans in my opinion.

Have you seen the posts on raw denim at les anti-modernes*? I was almost inspired to buy a pair after reading Sophie's posts.

Has anyone explored raw denim?

Male friends seem very happy with their selvedge jeans. So I'm wondering if this option makes sense for me, and what the collective experience of YLF has to say.
