Olivegreen, I see you are in the Southwest. Don't know if you are near Tucson but I virtually happened upon this mother daughter owned store there the other day via instagram called Bon Boutique...it's actually what triggered my 501 googling! They sell the 1890's version.

I recall doing the bathtub thing just once. Try getting those wet things off!
The Levis store I visited was probably at the level Gap used to be.
For anyone interested in the old denim styles, Levis is pretty good. From raw to gradients of distressed, you can get, again in the mens sections, beautifully organized denim jeans and jackets, which you can mix and match as you like. In my area, the hipster Southwest, you can double or triple denim without the slightest tinge of irony. At any age. Add silver and wallah!

My 1st job was with the gap in the 80s, we sold tons of those. I didn't even know Levi's was still making them! We used to recommend putting them on and getting into the bathtub so that they would mold to your body! Never did that myself,so I can't vouch for that method. In those days you bought your real size, because the jeans where built to shrink.

Thanks, people. I like balancing masculine and feminine and these are mens pants, so am giving up some conventional femininity for comfort and the pleasure of a substantial and well made product, made easily available.
I also popped into the Gap for the first time in years, and was shocked at the shoddiness of womens offerings. I know, out of it.
Having just bought mens jeans, I wandered over to check their side, and what a difference, substantial cottons rather than stiff and transparent polyesters.
Have been stealing my husbands stuff for a while now, and he is happy I am just going to the source!
Also, he had those same jeans when he was a lad. We laughed.

Inspired by all the denim on YLF and the blogs, I decided to check out the Levis CT Angie mentioned earlier this week.
They were front and center and somewhat distressed, so picked up a pair, was on the way to the dressing room, when passed the Mens raw, shrink to fit, 501s. They stopped me in my tracks, as they were the same jeans a younger self remembered breaking in, for horseriding. Wore like iron.
Enlisted sweet store assistant and raw denim fanatic, who informed me that this was an inexpensive entry into the raw denim thing...so we wrangled a couple of sizes.
You guessed it. The fashionable CTs were dismissed with a sniff and the retro 501s went home. Being waistless again, I guess I have that straight column and wide shoulders that scream tomboy. And the quality of the mens offerings was measureably better than the thin and gimmicky womens stuff.
So thanks to Approprio and her RATE pics. I will add more structure and polish in the shoes and woven shirts that look good with the stiffness of the jeans. They shrank to perfect size, so size up generously, one or two sizes depending on your waistline's ability to expand and contract in the course of a day.
First post, hope it was not too long, will try for a pic if I ever write another :-)
Thanks for your inspiration, all.
