Yo! Another Canuck weighing in - I definitely have the same problem; I have found that Zara bottoms work well for me! In addition, the brand "1921" if you can find them, gives me a very trim middle and looks sexy :p

yummy tummy camis work pretty good at keeping MT at bay. I cannot tolerate a too high rise so I do pop a cami, if I am having an MT week.

MsKK -- I was in Gap today, returning a pair of Really Skinny pants for the same reason: rise was way too low. The SA introduced me to their "Mid Rise Skinny" jean -- which has a generous waist, high enough rise, and good stretch. My normal size fit me well and I would have bought two pair if they'd had another. I'm going to order a second pair to keep at SO's house.

http://www.gap.com/browse/prod.....-jeans.jsp

They are a very dark wash with no whiskering, distressing, sanding, whimsical stitching, rhinestones, or other junior-esque jean features. And no bulges caused by a too-small waist hitting in the wrong place.

ETA: Dang, I just realized that online they are only available in sizes 00 and 20. They seem quite similar to what they're calling their "stiletto jean", though, although the stiletto has a longer inseam: http://www.gap.com/browse/prod.....=153109002

I am also a squishy rectangle with a long rise and a curvy butt--although my legs are not especially shapely until the ankles. I actually prefer low-rise jeans, although I'm younger than most on this forum. A 7.5" rise is "magic" for me because it sits on my hips below my squishy section; I can comfortably wear a 7-8" rise. I'm more rectangle than apple so this works for me, as long as I don't try to tuck a slim shirt into pants.

I've tried countless mid-rise and high-rise jeans, including premium brands, and they actually give me muffin top because my rise is verrrry long (waist = hand width above my belly button) but doesn't go in much. If I do manage to find a high-rise pant that hits my true waist, I have to go up 2 sizes and everything else is huge.

So, just an alternative perspective on dealing with muffin top... don't rule out low-rise completely, especially in premium brands that will fit your booty better. Very low rises are cut with a large waist to accommodate hips, so you may be able to size down (I have a 28" waist and wear a size 26 low-rise jean).

@DonnaF - No I haven't tried JAG's. Perhaps this is a brand I should look into.  Thanks!

@JR - thanks for the review on the Reitmans! I noticed their comfort fit pants fabric has gotten better (I looked into them when they first came out and it was way too "polyester-y for me". I'm going to try sizing up and see if that works.

@Scarlet - that looks like a soft elastic waist! And that's from Mango? Hmm.. Worth looking into! Thanks!

I haven't noticed too much bag at the bum or knees. A bit in the thighs sometimes. I think the fact that they are stretch helps to reduce bagging, as the fabric will hug better. I've only started wearing jeans again at all in the last couple of years, and so far I have been quite happy with theirs, although I do find the zip front ones fit better, even if they are a wee bit bulkier. YMMV.

I have a very different body type with thighs and calves a size or two larger than hips and waist, but am wondering if you have ever tried Jag pull-on jeans? They are made of regular jeans fabric but have a faux zipper and wide stretchy panel at the top which is about the width of some Express Editor slack styles. (I had to take them in at the waist.) Jags might be too roomy in the legs for you, however, since I get a fit.

@cciele - I wish they had long and leans in SKINNY version! I remember having luck with these as they are mid-rise (just below my belly button). The only problem I have with them is they stretch out almost a full size larger. I'm very (VERY) picky with bum and knee sagging! I'm not a huge fan of Gap's Always Skinny and they don't have enough of the Always Skinny mid-rise.

Ahh well -_-

I'm also a rectangle and sympathize with your problem! Today I wore my Gap Long and Leans after having worn BF jeans for months, and I realized I had no muffin top in them So they might work for you (although they do stretch a bit out as the day goes on)

@JR - YAAAAY another Canadian! :D

I tried the Reitmans pants - and their comfort fit still squishes me I guess I just have an unusually big belly (it really doesn't look like it though, because of my slim limbs. I look slim on first glance).

With regards to the Reitmans - have you tried the jeans? Do they bag a lot on the knees and bum? Those are my two areas of concern with jeans, in general.

I have a very similar problem. Squishy rectangular apple, that's me. I am working on reducing the squishy part, but I will never have much of a waist.

I prefer stretch jeans, which I normally get - wait for it - at Reitman's. They also have a good selection of pull-up pants which add less bulk at the belly. Any pants I get with no stretch create the muffin top at the waist and then get too loose everywhere else. There is no point at which they fit really well. I am considering taking in the side seams on some of them once the waist fits, to be able to wear them longer, especially the lighter-weight fabrics, which make the looseness more obvious.

If the muffin top isn't too terribly bad, I wear loose tunic-length tops to disguise it. If it's just a slight bulge, black sweaters or prints camouflage it well.

I haven't been on the forum for a few days and here I notice a multitude of responses! Thank you for your suggestions and feedback, ladies! I will be addressing some of these feedback individually:

@Kim - My KK jeggings actually fall just right on my belly button and it holds me in fine. I still get a mini-muffin (and sometimes breathing problems) but it's comfortable and looks good otherwise. I can wear slimmer-fitting tops without looking like sausage casing. Thanks for the suggestion! I do notice that the lower the rise, the worse the muffin gets!

@Scarlet - I tried maternity pants, actually and don't worry - I am not offended! Sometimes it all boils down to body type! Anyway - with my experience with maternity pants, after a while the ones I tried (I don't remember the brand - it was long ago) is that they tend to fall off around my hips and don't hold the jeans up enough. Eventually the bum and knees look saggy. From what I remember of the brand, it seems generic - not a maternity version of the higher end brands.

@Freckles: FINALLY A CANADIAN!!!! I haven't really tried Le Chateau yet - I actually never would've thought of it given that I found most of their fabric a bit "cheap." I will not rule it out though. Thanks for the suggestion!

@Anna and Dana - I tried NYDJ - while they fit AMAZINGLY (and I mean AMAZINGLY) on the waist, I found the hips/thighs/legs a bit too big! I have slim legs (not skinny though - a lot of booty and a whole lot of thigh due to running). I have 3 pairs and altered 2 of them (and successfully WRECKED them). All of them had to be taken in from the hips down - and even then, they stretch out massively and bag on the knees. You have no idea how sad I was after that. I learned next time that I shouldn't do my own alterations, but I found a lot of alteration places are very apprehensive about working with jeans. So yeah - frustrating :(

@Elisabeth - every time I try woven tops, it makes me cry. I am very chesty - and so button-down woven tops emphasize this and even emphasize my straight waist (despite the darts and princess seams). It makes me look bigger than I am. What DOES work for me are delicate woven tops - I tend to go for semi-fitted and I never look too top heavy. Oddly enough, knit tops (the ruched variety) are quite slimming on me.

@Una - You're an IT, correct? How does surrendering the waist work for you? I tend that I need SPECIFIC methods in surrendering the waist, without looking extremely top heavy (because I tend to - but I don't have the broad shoulders of an IT). I find that dolman sleeved tops with deep, wide V's and cinching at the low hips work best - but there's not enough styles like that (most are boat necks). Overall though, I'm often seen in ruched top/tailored semi-fitted jacket combo or a partially surrendered waist (assymetrical tunics with one side ruched or shaped).

@Shiny - thanks for the explanation! It's really sweet and encouraging of you! I have about a 0.87 ratio. They say that this hip-to-waist ratio is unhealthy, but I don't remember ever being below a 0.8... *shrugs* So yeah obviously, I'm a very very very difficult one to fit. This is why I've taken up (and often miserably fail) sewing. It will take me a lot of time and practice though. Again - thanks!

I am also a victim of the muffin top. I found some skinnies at Costco of all places. They are the Calvin Kline ones - they come in 3 tones (black, mid wash, dark wash). I bought one and liked them so much I bought a second pair. Happy to say they do not sag after wear, and zero muffin. They were about $23 dollars. I am based in Ontario.

I agree again. My waist-to-hip ratio is 0.81 (I just got out the calculator) and I wouldn't want to be much leaner than I am now. I'm just a boyish shape. I think it explains why my pants always want to slide down!

I want to add here that even when I was in high school, before kids, and weighed only 97 lbs, I still had a 0.8 waist/hip ratio. When I was lifting weights 5x's a week, running half marathons, and had very very low body fat, I still had 0.8 waist/hip ratio. And yes, when I gain weight, it's still 0.8 ratio... gain too much, then it starts getting greater than that.

The point is, it's not worth hating your body. Some of us are born with this shape, and it's not fat, it's just how we are built. It's the *clothes* that are the problem, not our figures.

Unfortunately, alterations don't really work for this (as they do for those who have the opposite problem, and waist bands are always too loose). Altering a skirt works. Heck, this is why I started gravitating towards skirts and dresses in the first place... much easier to fit than jeans and pants!

Muffin top is caused by the waist band being too tight -- no matter how slim and fat-free you are, and no matter where the rise lands. I could wear lower rise jeans if I found some that weren't too tight in the waistband AND didn't slide down -- since I don't have a lot of curves.

Clothing manufacturers tend to shoot for "average" to hit as much of the mass market as possible. Average waist/hip ratio is around 0.75. This is why so many women with 0.7 ratio or lower find the waistbands to be too loose (creating dreaded butt crack effect) and women with 0.8 ratio or greater get muffin top.

There's something magical about 9 inch rises on my figure; I guess at that point on my body, my body fits within the 0.75 average ratio curve. Note, this rise does not land at my natural waist -- which is much higher. It hits right below my belly button, which is just a smidge above the top of my hip bone.

I get muffin all the time and posted an angst-filled thread about it here once. I tend to go with midrise because it girdles me without segmenting me right in the middle or making me feel too squeezed up. This is another reason I love waist surrendering looks - they hide any muffin, since it tends to grow over the day.

I second the recommendation to try higher-rise jeans. I don't have much of a booty, so these suggestions may not work for you, but it's worth a try:

1) Urban Outfitters BDG High-Rise Cigarette Jeans, $58.

These work if you do not have large feet/big ankles. If you can get them up over your ankles, they are a nice 10 inch rise, which sucks every jiggly bit in. I have no muffin top with these. Note, not all the fabrics are the same, some are stretchier than others. Try the medium blue first. They shrink a lot, so don't fret if they are too long/too loose when you first order. I find them TTS.

They do stretch over the course of the day, but never sag in the rear (provided I wear a belt to keep them up). They will sag a tad in the knees, but not much. I do not have to run them through the wash after each wear. I probably wear them about 8 times between each wear!

2) AG Farrah High-Rise Skinnies, $178.

These are new, so I have yet to see them on sale, and yes they are expensive but I *highly* recommend them! They have a 9.5 in rise and come up to just a pinch/ or half inch under my belly button. They are made of a super stretchy fabric -- it stretches over the day, but does not sag. I bought them in two sizes, thought the larger size was too stretchy, but when I took pics and posted a WiW, I realized they did not *look* stretchy at all. Weird. These do not give me any muffin top to speak of, because the waist band is also fairly stretchy. (often jeans with stretch will stretch everywhere but the waistband... so annoying). I just got them in a size down (my usual size), have yet to trial run them, but i think that size is going to work even better.

Please note, I have tried the AG Stilt (saw them on sale at TJ Maxx), but they are lower rise, so despite stretchiness, gave me muffin top. The Farrah is what you need.

I will add that my friend, who's pregnant, has AG skinny maternity jeans in the exact same stretch denim. She has a totally different shape than me - curvier hips/rear. And the AG's work beautifully on her too.

3) AG mid-rise Alexa slim bootcut, especially since you say you like slimmer cuts. These are a tad lower than the Farrah. Size up one size in these, as they have no stretch and will not sag at all.

4) I also have had good luck, in the past, with Citizens of Humanity (higher rise styles only, such as the Huttons) and with Inc brand at Macy's (again, higher rise styles only: unfortunately, the quality is not all that great. I do recommend the 5-pocket Ponte Knit pants if you are looking for pants other than denim. So comfy!)

You can see a trend here. To tackle muffin top, I've learned I need about a 9 inch rise. 8.5 is passable, with a stretchy cami and flowy top. 9-9.5 inch, and muffin top disappears! It's all about where the waistband hits you. Find your magic number.

Great post, thank you so much for asking the question. Looks like these are some good suggestions. I'm a similar body shape and have had decent luck with INC, Joes Jeans and Calvin Klein.

MsKatieKat, you are not the only one with a muffin. I think the Not Your Daughter's Jeans could be a good choice. I have a pair of 7's (skinnies, not sure of the name) that have a bit of a higher rise and are slim in the legs. They would probably work for your booty, too. They give me a bit of a muffin, but I just make sure to disguise it with semi fitted tops, etc.

If you want boot cuts, the Paige Laurel Canyon would be a good choice. Alterations are a good option for you for pants..

One thing that also helps is wearing woven tops instead of knits. My hubby is built such that even though is is thin, he always has a little extra right below his navel. Men's jeans always sit quite low on the hips, yet with the tops he wears, you cannot see any lumps at all. He usually wears a plain short-sleeve tee shirt under a button-front shirt. I use that trick myself when I'm wearing tight, low-rise jeans. It hides all muffin top issues!

I suggest Not Your Daughter's Jeans (NYDJ) brand. They fit me fine in the waist but are too tight in the thigh, so they might work for you.

Have you tried Le Chateau? I bought these pants and just love them.

http://www.lechateau.com/style.....olor=Black

My bootie is small though so we differ there but the muffin top is very large...

They handwash beautifully and don't even have to be ironed. Don't lose much dye either.

Personally I'm never happy with a pant unless it is a side zip. They just seem to fit and flatter beautifully.

You know, maybe this is a wacky idea, but possibly consider maternity pants? I have only recently become acquainted with them, but essentially instead of a tight waist band, there is an elastic band that keeps them up without pinching. It might create a smoother line. I am actually considering wearing them in the future on long plane rides, for example, where it would be much more comfortable. Check these out just to see what I mean:
http://www.topshop.com/webapp/.....~%5B209831|208537]&noOfRefinements=1

I really hope you don't find this suggestion offensive. If the pants are cute and look good, who cares where you bought them.

ETA: just want to emphasize, that this is no comment on your or anyone else's body shape or saying that muffin-top has anything to do with looking pregnant. I just think hidden elastic waistbands could be kind of awesome sometimes.

I saw a stylist yesterday on Rachel Ray that said to banish muffin top your jeans can't be more than 2 fingers below your belly button. How do your jeans compare to that? Your Karen Kane ones especially? She said most women wear their jeans 4 fingers below and that hits right at the squishable area...

i have a similar issue, i'm slim, but have a muffin top. this season i have found more jeans, even skinny ones, with a higher rise. the high rise covers just the area that tends to "muffin", but still manages not to enter "mom jeans" territory.
i found a great fit with rag and bones skinnies, but i noticed that many brands, at all price points have added high rise styles to the mix this year.

@Kelly - Nope no Target in Canada but that will change soon I really hope they will have different fits over here though. Merchandise seems to change up here with regards to different brands :(

@rae - You and I probably have a similar body type then (probably minus my muffin top). I'm straight in the hip but I got booty as well. I think I have a long rise though.
