Denise, I am with Una - I love to see a handful of WIW together. I do get overwhelmed after 4 or 5 but that's just me. You are right about the give and take aspect . . . I like to think I give input as much as post my own. But at any rate, the irritating post in question is long in the records and so is my attachment to it. I'm free!!!

I do plan on returning to Tahoe imminently! I was hesitant to say, but the BF called our old boss at the pub (who had called us up to work not 2 days after he just got to FL, remember?!) and said we are planning our return and to please call us. Well, got a call back the next night and he said he'll pencil us in! So we have all expectations of a job waiting. Wheee!!! Planning to leave FL on the 15th of December to be ready to work the crazy Xmas to New Years week.

Denise, I love when people post a series of WIWs in a post - it's so much fun to see cohesiveness and variety that way. I never do it, of course, because I can't seem to get my act together. But I love when you, Christie, Aida, and others do it!

Hi Mo -- I'm dumping a lot of thoughts here...

First, you KNOW I always comment when I see your WIWs or any Mo threads. We have a lot in common living casual lifestyles.

However I haven't been here much lately. I have been feeling less interested on the one hand, and on the other hand, overwhelmed. So today I posted a WIW because I knew that would re-engage me in the forum. As a result, today was the first day in a while that I spent a lot of time here. I agree it's hard not to get comparative or competitive with others, I do it too but instead of thinking I shouldn't post WIWs any more I think the opposite. It's usually when I'm not participating as much that my threads aren't as "popular." I think the people who get a lot of responses tend to GIVE a lot on the forum as well.

One thing I try to do on a regular basis is go to the WIW section. That way I might pull up some older WIWs that got pushed down on the list.

This is tangential, but I wonder if anyone else feels guilty for starting too many threads. For example, I lump my WIWs together and lately spend a fair amount of time creating collages with captions etc. Also I put a fair amount of effort into finding good photo locations. However, I wonder if just a simple one-outfit WIW would be less cumbersome for everyone. I'm thinking of going this route again. My WIW post today had 6 outfits in it, a little overwhelming no?

Sorry I missed your BR thread (what does that stand for BTW). It's just been a busy season, I'm still working 6 days a week but starting next monday I go to only 4-5. Woohoo!!!

Any chance you will be coming to Tahoe in the (near) future?

I'm sorry, Mo! I didn't see the post in question, but I've been barely on the forum for the past three weeks, and at the moment I'm feeling like I just can't keep up.

For the record, I've always thought you have fabulous style. It suits your lifestyle, your personality and your body shape. Carry on!

Another Mo fan here too! I totally dig your casual style, and seeing how you've been refining what it means to dress the Mo way I often go on spurts of commenting and comment less often than I should.

But anyhow, I totally sympathize. I think looks that are too edgy/out of the norm get fewer responses too. FWIW, I've noticed a trend of when I post an outfit that is relatively "normal" or incorporating a popular item, I will get more responses than my edgier outfits (and I haven't even begun to post my really out-there outfits). I think people post more when they can relate to an outfit and how it fits in their own lifestyle.

Irene, so sweet of you to post! I agree, it's not worth letting get under your skin, and if it does you need to step back a bit - and I did. And I'm happy!! Thanks for the nice comments, by the way. And I'm sure you totally felt disheartened to not have anyone acknowledge your beautiful work It is hard to 'put yourself out there' to some degree for all of us. Thanks again!

Hi Mo, I'm one of those who hardly ever comments on WIW, but I do check some of yours. To be honest, I actually like your outfits better than other's because I feel I could wear that myself, and that doesn't happen with other posters. I realize I normally comment on the same people (if I do), which are the ones I always, or almost always, like. Also, I live in a different country with a totallly different sense of style and many American looks you fabolous women portray look quite odd to me. Which is why I normally comment on more European-like WIW.

As for not getting comments, someone above was right: if it gets to the point where it's nerve-wreaking, just stop. After posting these two photos in a Photography Forum, I only got two replys for #2 and none for #1. And even if those are not fantastic, or spectacular, I truly believed they were worth a pretty number of replies for many reasons, including a beautiful model, a careful setting, a strange angle, a mindful postprocessing and a story in itself. Yet I didn't get any replies. I felt so bad I decided I wouldn't post on that forum again for a while. It only damaged my self-esteem, and many other posts were as average or even worse than mine.

Which gets me to the next point. After being is many foums of different themes I can say there are always those who receive a lot of comments (no matter what) and then those who don't, even if they 'deserve' them. It always happens, and it's because those people comment more on other's, or they have been around for longer, or they just sound graceful and interesting.

My point here is, don't let it get to you. We are just not worth it. Really.

PS: And when I look at you in short skirts I always think 'damn, I want mine to like like hers at 40!'

I've just added a post where I have used your post as inspiration so even if people don't comment it's not always because they don't care or like your particular posts. I feel the same as Deb & cjh I'm learning so much about my style from being here & any feedback is an incredibly lovely bonus..

@citygirldc, i went thru those feelings, bought a lot of stuff that i have since purged, and come full circle back to my original style...lots of black, lots of structure, minimal pattern and no pattern mixing.

i have now startd to think about dssing similar to investing...there is a lot of noise about the markets and i've gotten really good at tuning it out and sticking to an investment plan. with dressing, there is also a lot of information via blogs, magazines, etc that encourage experimentation And pushing the style envelope. i need to apply my investment approach to my dressing approach and stick to what works for me instead of being all over the style map. innovation for the its own sake is not how i want approach anything. but soomehow,in fashion, novelty is externally rewarded even among the consumers. so my personal response is to cut down on the information feed i get, focus on what i have now and be much much choosier about how i stay "current."

@mo,while i appreciatd the exercise of putting together a br capsule, i failed to see the pointin engaging in the exercise unless it was going to take me to a destinationi wanted to go. i've done the vivienne files one as a thought exercise because i am a minimalist at heart. there my challenge was to discover how much (or how little) color or pattern i needed to stave off boredom. similarly, as you pointed out it seemed like wasted effort if the outfits that you could create were essentially not a good fit with your lifestyle.

Hi to all who have stopped by on this post today! It's great to hear all your viewpoints and wonderful to see things from other angles as well.
Deb, coming here as a means to an end for knowledge is totally valid.
I don't feel like nobody loves me and I'm gonna eat some worms ha ha ha - but I was frustrated at putting in several hours of effort, not solely for my own benefit. I actually did it as a learning experience for all, and a challenge to myself. I see that the post has resurrected today and some have acknowledge the effort, which is nice to see.
I'm feeling fine, just needed to vent at the time, which I did. Onward and upward!

I kind of feel like Deb. I really like reading and looking at many people's posts to see their outfit combinations - almost all are inspiring for one aspect or another - color, patterns mixed or not, bold use of accessories, a different idea for putting things together, making the most of clothes in work, casual, social or travel situations. And I put up my own photos in large part to help me see myself from a different perspective. To me, it's nice to hear a comment or compliment or two, but if I didn't, I'd probably learn a lot just by looking at my own photos and others! I try to comment when I can.

There are days I don't have time to do other than click through to see who has posted photos - work and other commitments tend to suck up lots of my time! But I enjoy being part of the forum and "getting to know" the other ladies, who all (including you) have their own beauty, creativity and personal style qualities.

This is an interesting thread. I am a relatively newcomer here and just learning by trial and error how I want to use the YLB site. I am just surmizing here, but it appears to me that those that have participated on the site since the beginning have a different feeling about the posts. A more emotional feeling, more like a friend. I am here just to gain knowledge and new ways to do things, dress, shop, or whatever topic is at the forefront. Although that may seem selfish, it is what I use my computer for. A means to an end. I never expect anyone to post on my threads because I use the post as an excersize. Much like school did and does. The socializing is an extra bonus. Of coarse, I feel this way with work also. Maybe my view is unusual in that respect.

Like you I feel the same way hence I don't post my outfits too often. Sometimes I feel my outfits are not edgy enough or I tend to repeat lots of my outfits. Honestly, I really don't know what my style is any more. I used to know back in college when all I did was wear black but now I'm lost in away. A party of me want that edgy "youthful" look and then a part of me wants that sophisticated "older" look.

Most of the time I come here to get inspired but everyone else outfits.

I know I hesitate to post sometimes simply because I don't typically have any *constructive* comments. It might be interesting to look a little closer at what threads I do comment on. I think the more casual looks are of more interest to me because that is what I wear daily, but maybe they aren't the posts I comment on. Embarrassingly enough, I have a hard time recognizing what makes combinations work - or not - and articulating that.

The dinosaur pic is an all-time favorite of mine. It has a dedicated place in my memory (and I have a memory like a sieve!). Also, I love your red and white outfit there!

I was thinking about fab and plain outfits this week. Like, I'll get up, put on something, and then *de-fab* it for the office. Because the thing is, fashion is not my business. Also, when I walk the dog after getting off work at the bakery, it is late late at night. I throw on my weird wool hat and old puffer and look downright shabby. But you know, the fashion show is over by that time of day and different people are out. I think some of the nice people we talk to wouldn't talk to us if we didn't look like we belonged to the "nightside."

And then there's the granola-nut-in-the-forest fashion I love, but don't sport much right now and so is going undocumented...

Not sure how often I comment, but I read a lot more posts than I'm able to answer. For me as a non-native speaker every comment takes time! I also often wonder if I should post my outfits, because my looks are so similar to each other. I just don't have that many clothes and I don't buy that many new things.

I love how you've taken trends, styles, and made them your own AND done it over two distinctly different climates. Yes, we get distinct climates here, but they come with plenty of warning - not like your move back to FL ;-)

I agree about the forum moving too quickly - I rarely get beyond Page 1 and that can mean I only see the last 20-30 mintues of activity sometimes! I also agree with limiting time for bringing balance back IRL. I think when you get back to working and have that real life outlet for your style, that will also help confirm your clothing choices - seeing how you look fab and your clothes actually work for you too :-)

Not that it matters much, but I've wondered why I sometimes choose to open one thread over another, or write a reply in one and not another. I've just begun to see some patterns in myself. I do know writing responses does NOT come easily to me. I have even avoided starting my own posts because I remember how awkward I felt trying to reply to comments in my own thread. . . :-\

Love Nadya's insight into when it's good to step back a little!

Thanks again for the support. I don't have hurt feelings per se - it was more a feeling of frustration at putting forth a lot of effort I guess. Anyway, I'm over it and a-okay! Nadya, you are right that if it's getting under one's skin it might be time to take a step back, no? And yes, what works in our everyday real life that we love, and hopefully look good in, is exactly what it's all about!
Signing off until this evening; putting my moderation plan into effect

I haven't been in the forum much but I do understand what you mean.Good casual looks are very hard to achieve and most of the times they work better IRL than in photos. And people won't comment as much.
I do try to post on less commented posts because I know how it feels to be left without an answer but when posts go to page 2 or 3 my forum time doesn't allow me to reach them.
I didn't see your BR challenge(in fact I didn't know there was one) but I always enjoy seeing your outfits and hear your 'adventures'.

I don't have an exact read on why some posts gather more replies than others. I know that for me, when I start to obsess over how many replies I'm getting, it's time to stop posting WIW. A few months ago I honestly thought I'd never post one again because it was just too nerve-wracking putting myself out there as. Now I post when I have something I really want to share for some reason - a new jacket I love, or something that's out of my norm, like pattern mixing. But if I start to get my feelings hurt or if I try to read too much between the lines then I'll stop again.

I love how your style works for your life - isn't that what it's all about?

Hmm, I think a lot of what causes certain posts to get more comments is timing. I'm in the PST timezone and the blog updates in the EST timezone. So a lot of people on EST may be waking up, checking the blog and then wandering over to the forum. So a thread that is posted then may get a lot of replies.

Also, I happen to start at the top and work my way down, as do (I think) a lot of people. A comment on a thread pushes it to the top, increasing the probability someone else will comment on it. So you have a bunch of threads dominating the top half of the first page. By the time a thread gets to page 2 or page 3, it's less likely someone will hunt for it and comment again.

FWIW Mo, I have always been impressed by your casual looks. Your outfits always look polished and put together to me and I 100% get the functionality aspect of it. I never want to be the person saying "oh no, I can't walk there because I have heels on" when it would otherwise be feasible to go on foot.

I've been off the forum all weekend and just catching up now. I know you've ranted about this before and I understand your gripe, I really do.

I usually don't post my casual outfits because 1) I feel I have a handle on them; 2) they're not that interesting; and 3) I'm probably going to wear them regardless of what people suggest.

Just don't take it personally! I think it's too easy to feel like the number of responses a post gets is somehow related to whether people like you or your style, and I just don't think that's true. Some days are slow, posts get shoved off the front page, and there are frankly days when I'm on and browsing but too brain-dead to say anything worthwhile.

I'm a huge Mo fan and we have a lot in common despite our lifestyle and climate differences (I'd like to be ready to climb a dinosaur or kayak if the need arose!), so I always try to check your posts....

Thanks again for your understanding. It's weird, I don't want a ton of praise, heck, I'm the gal who has always deflected compliment IRL with quips like I got this dress for such a deal, blah blah blah. I think it's more to do with lack of acknowlegement for the *effort* involved. Like the wear every shoe challenge, or trying the BR mix with shorts and sandals instead and trying to make it still work. And funny enough, I also hear again and again how hard it is for some of these posters to put together a great casual outfit.
I am as bad as anyone at not posting replies on WIW's that I like - many of which are yours, ladies! I agree, with the pace of the board these days it's just crazy to try and keep up without looking like a crazed auto posting robot lol.
All in all, this is just as much about me as anything Gotta remember my real life audience and my circumstances I am dressing for! Rae, you're right - blogosphere and casual looks are not a common match

This is why I rarely post my weekend looks Mo. I always figure it's my work looks that are more interesting - although that could just be in my head (lol)!

FWIW, I applaud that you get dressed nicely every day and consider your combinations including jewelry and footwear. I know when I'm on summer vacation and not "needing" to go anywhere, I dress much sloppier and less put together than you do.

And as Anna has pointed out, there are many times I personally look and surf the forum but don't have time to comment. I apologize if I have done that to your posts.

I am sorry, too, as I am a die-hard Mo fan but have been on the forum much less and also have less stamina to go through the whole list of posts like I used to. I don't think I saw the BR pics at all! :(

I do agree and sympathize, though, that the more casual and less edgy looks don't get as much attention. It is WAAAY worse off this forum, however. If I tried to post on Chictopia or somesuch, forget it... and then there is the fact that we are still in summery clothes while so many are looking for winter inspiration. :T

Anyway, you do a much better job of dressing at home than I do, and I think that's awesome. Not to mention the action pics above - as I have found, my office looks could barely stand a few blocks of walking!

Sorry, Mo, because I was one of the people who looked at your BR pictures but didn't comment. I actually love looking at your WIWs because you always manage to look so polished without looking like your clothes are dictating your lifestyle. You make it look so effortless it's easy to forget that nailing that casual style is probably the hardest challenge most of us face when it comes to our wardrobes. And I don't know anyone else who can dress for climbing a dinosaur the way that you can!

I understand, Mo. I often take pics of my casual outfits but rarely post them because they seem so boring (and poorly photographed) compared to the dressier, trendier or better-photographed outfits I see here. I really appreciate seeing other posters' casual looks, though, because I struggle with casual outfits, so I hope you will keep posting WIWs (I'm terrible about looking but not commenting, due to time restraints). I wil try to post more of my own too.

Hey Mo. I sympathize. If I didn't have to go to work, I would never have anything worthy of posting. I guess in a way you are lucky that you live in a climate that has no true winter but it also means you are out of sync with the majority for half the year.

I find that most forums seem to follow the 10-80-10 principle. 10% get lots of attention, 80% get average attention and 10% don't get as much attention.

Cool dino.
