Joy, I think that going with a group of teenagers as a student ambassador and being encouraged by their host mother to give it a try made it hard for my daughter to say no.. sometimes peer pressure can be for good!!!

TraceyLiz, I wasn't brave enough to go to the public baths. DS really wanted us to have an onson (spelling??) experience. He has female friends who he said were willing to take me, but I was too shy. I'm glad that your daughter had such a positive life-changing experience.
We found the food fabulous. I was concerned before going because I can't have even a small amount of rice, but it wasn't a problem. The lacquer slippery chopsticks were a challenge but the cheapy wooden ones were very easy to use. I suppose Japanese with arthritis in their hands are not bothered because of long use.

I sent my daughter to Japan for her 16th b'day and while she didn't like the food and existed off of rice for two weeks, she fell in love with the people, the fashions (which she finds on ebay) and learned to love her body... She developed young and before she was emotionally ready and was dressing to hide her body... After going to a community bath and seeing the admiring looks from the young girls, her size C cups became a source of pride and she came back a totally confident young lady even declaring to her brother's that she loved her breasts! Can't believe she is about to graduate from college and go to graduate school!!!! Thanks for sharing!
I'm glad that you are enjoying these pictures. I've got many more on the camera that are not accessible to post yet.
Angie, we did go to Harajuku, which was amazing with its shoppers in cute and over-the-top girly outfits. We were there on St. Patrick's Day when there was a parade and related festivities, so it was beyond crazy. DH refused to even try to get down the street which looked like an overcrowded subway car at rush hour. I think he was also protecting me from the temptation of the sweet shops. I may have gotten a few shots with the camera. All photos I've posted so far were taken with my iPhone.
Our hotel was in Shinjuku after returning from Kyoto. There was lots of shopping. Across from our hotel, a short walk from Shinjuku station from the New South Terrace entrance, was a store that sold Porter bags. DS has 4 of them and is a big advocate of these Japanese made bags. He really wanted me to get one but I didn't really love any that I saw.
Here is an iPhone shot from our hotel room in Shinjuku. The park below is where I took the photo of the blooming tree.

Joy, what a treat it was to read your post and look at your pictures (although it's afternoon and you're probably asleep now)!

I loved the cherry blossom shot. It reminded me of all of the cherry trees in DC where I grew up. But they were younger and so much smaller.

Interesting about your take on the fashion too, especially the neutrals. I was very impacted by the stylish Japanese women I saw in Hawaii last year. For the most part, the women around our age dressed very conservatively and in neutrals, while their daughters wore more colorful, flamboyant and on-trend clothing. While I noticed the younger women first, I really admired the quieter, sohpisticated style of the women of a certain age.

Rest up, we have catching up to do! I'm glad you had a good trip.

so interesting. i live in a neighborhood near 2 large universities, and i love august when all the foreign students arrive (we have a particulary high level of Asian students). when they 1st arrive, they are dressed in the current styles/trends of their home country's, and its always so interesting. by the end of the year, it seems they have "Americanized" their looks.

It's 4am and I'm wide awake.
I keep thinking of things I should add like hardly any women in heels except small kitten heels. I didn't see heels in the stores either.
Parsley, one of my packing mistakes was to end up switching out the blush scarf for a black one because it was warmer. I did wear that black scarf almost daily, but so wished it was blush or ivory. Black on black seemed too heavy.

My mind is so overloaded and jet-lagged but I wanted to share some impressions before I forget. In general, the Japanese are upbeat, laughing and having a great time. By far the most popular color was black, most often paired with camel, tan or blush shades. There was almost no leather, even in bags. DS said that there is a huge tariff on leather, so no displays of colorful leather jackets here.
The weather was cold, but there was a nod to spring in most outfits. I was surprised by how many sheer skirts I saw, many with lace. I was also surprised at how many ankle length skirts I saw.
Here are a few street shots
1-3: Blush with black was everywhere.
4-5: Mint
6-8: sheer or lace skirts
9: floral pants. Most I saw were low contrast. They were worn by all ages.
10: There were lots of tights, some colored, some sheer, some that looked like tattoos on the leg.
11: lots of plaid before the spring equinox, especially on the guys. It disappeared and lots of shorts appeared March 21st,
mostly baggy and short with tights. I saw lots of Cons too.
