I needed to read this today. I just talked with my a.a. sponsor about how I need to start applying the steps (to recovery from alcoholism) to delicious empty carbs and shopping for anything (clothes, shoes, building materials, decor, groceries, you name it)

So seriously, reading this was so on-time and on-point. Thank you for the inspiration!
And I'm going through the hormonal perimenopause stuff (ten years after surgically induced actual menopause) and am struggling with weight gain. So this information is on time and on point. Thank you for sharing your experience, strength, and hope with me as I start proactively dealing with the same issues. Changing my perspective on clothes from buying to experimenting with what I've bought; and considering keto or something other restive diet; these are things I hadn't thought of. I needed you this morning and my Higher Power made it happen.
XOXO

Cut the carb is a company that makes a flat sheet like a low carb tortilla. it can be used for wraps, taco's pizza the possibilities are endless. for our fast we have breakfast lunch and dinner Monday and do not eat again until Wednesday breakfast, and repeat Thursday. We have only coffee and water or a cup of bone broth on fasting days, but its hot now so really no bone broth for me. I usually loose about a pound a week. I do drink a lot of water and with the summer heat I have had to do power-aid zero. I am freezing now in the ac, and some times go outside to warm up a bit. I do enjoy this way of eating. Never going back.

Interesting update. I'm glad the new diet is working for you. I'm always trying to declutter my house but it's a losing battle with 3 kids. School starts in a couple weeks and I always try to get their rooms and desks cleaned out before the new school year. They have so many toys that they don't play with until I want to get rid of them and then all of sudden they're all favorites.

DeAnna - wow , way to go! That's a big achievement ! What is a cut-the-carb flat sheet? And is your T/Th fasting a 16/8 fast, or a 24hr fast?

I am down two sizes and for the first time I ordered some things from the NAS sale. We do fasting on Tuesday and Thursdays every week and I have never felt better. We have pizza for dinner every Friday with a cut the carb flat sheet as the crust. I really love this way of eating, It just takes a ton of planning.

Lisa, I did the decluttering month in June. Mr. SF didn't. We still have lots more to do. I am impressed that both of you are doing it.
It all sounds very exciting. Downsizing can be a release. (From what? Well, I guess that depends on the person.)

I plan to check out the deodorant. Thanks for the recommendation.

Ohh, thanks for the deodorant recommendation. I’ve been trying out lots of different ones, but not found the right one yet!

I love food and cooking and do eat for enjoyment. But I’m also a T1 diabetic and eating Low carb/high fat helps me get really great control. I don’t do keto because I’ve found that I need slightly more carbs, which I get from vegetables, fruit and nuts mostly. If you can get keto to work for you that’s great. There are some studies pointing to keto not working for some women in particular, but lower carb does.

My Mum is downsizing. She keeps giving things to me!

I'm curious as to which rose gold shampoo you're using -- is it Overtone? I keep seeing ads for their new metallics. It looks fun, but my hair is so dark it'd be a very subtle effect, unless I felt like bleaching...

So glad to hear things are on track for you! I'm interested in the keto way of eating. I don't really eat much fruit and do not crave sweets so aside from bread, I wouldn't have to give up too much to try it. I decided to order the monitor in fact - thanks Lisap! I see that it can also be used for a quick check of iron in blood and that would be so helpful for me if it's true.

I’m not doing a ketogenic diet but I’ve been no beans and no grains for the last three months. The beans seem to exacerbate joint pain and all grains seem to cause overproduction of stomach acid.

I’ve lost six pounds each month for the last three months and that’s with trying to eat as much as possible. I eat fruit and squash and potatoes and sweet potatoes but not starchy veggies related to soybeans like like green peas or green beans. I’m at a good weight for my frame and I’m hoping that my weight will stabilize soon.

Shevia - my "signature hair" is the short pixie with longer bangs I've been sporting for awhile now. No more longer back, layers , no longer top - just short all over and a longer bang. Bleached blonde/white highlights on natural roots. I have been using a rose gold "metallic" colouring shampoo lately too which is a fun way to switch up the colour with no permanent commitment. Re: the keto diet, I agree with you about fruit. That's been the toughest part. I do miss apples and bananas , pineapples, and mangos. Legumes and beans were always too hard to digest anyways, so I don't mind not feeling compelled to eat them anymore

I came to read about your July updates and then ended up ordering deodorant from Amazon and trying hard to follow all the information related to diet/fasting. Waves at Carter.

So much information! I feel uninformed. But I am always interested and want to learn as much as possible. I have done 24-hour fasts in which we limited our caloric intake to 500 calories. I have never fasted beyond that. I certainly am interested in trying though.

Great report, but where is the picture of your signature cut and color. Curious minds want to know!
I have tried keto diets of various types successfully, although in the end I like fruit and legumes too much to be fully committed. I do totally understand how it can be easier to be on strict diet than a moderate one. I am like that also. Congratulation on your success with decluttering your space and your mind!

I am busy right now, but have marked this one as a favourite and will return to it later--also to see if there are some extra tips in the comments, which I haven't read yet. Glad to hear that your decisions work for you. Thank you for your tips on deodorant. I will check whether the Weleda deodorant is available here. I really hope it is, as I have had the same frustrating experienceso as you had.

Thanks for a great update although I have been wondering how that new job is going and if the job and Black dress code is still working well for you.

Laughing at DH scaring you with his cleaning challenge- can he speak with my DH. He needs extra motivation as we are downsizing in preparing to move closer to our daughter. It is amazing and scary how much stuff people collect over a 42 year marriage and life in the same home for 34 years.

Happy to hear you are doing well on new eating plan. A friend is doing well on keto diet but I am not a big meat eater so its lost on me. I just have to keep away from processed foods- too bad I love them so much.

Thanks for deodorant tip. I have tried crystal and didn’t like it. Currently using Tom’s of Maine unscented- less stuff in it.

Enjoy rest of summer and please don’t be in a hurry for summer to end;-)

So good to hear an update and that life is gong well. I’m need to take a hard look at our clutter situation. DH and I have lived in our home for 20 plus years and DD is off to college in a month. I think October will be a month of purging.

I just returned from a month of family travel overseas with almost every meal in a restaurant and I now weigh more than I have in two years. I’m trying hard to eat sensibly and get the exercise back on track. It is always interesting to hear about what others find works on this front. I used MyFitnessPal 3 years ago to lose 20plus pounds and keep it off. But I don’t track on long vacations. I must figure out a way.

I will look into the deodorant. I really like th Crystal stick and roll on. I use the roll on at home and the little mini stick for air travel (be careful not to drop the crystal when one wets it to activate, it will shatter).

Great post Lisa. So glad you are feeling happy with your uniforms. I am increasingly settling on that way of dressing, too. Who cares if some might find it boring? It makes me happy and I am clothed to a socially acceptable degree.

I have also been bitten by the decluttering bug. I have been chipping away at things over the past couple of years. I find that it is a bit of an iterative process. Partly because I have a kid who is still at an age where she is growing into and out of things. Partly because after living with my new collection of stuff for a while I realize that there are still things I am holding on to that I don’t need. The strategy that has made the biggest difference for me is decluttering by category.

I also think that decluttering and spending less are two closely linked goals. When you really confront your stuff, you develop a different sense of how much you *don’t* need.

Lisa, I’ll try the Weleda deodorant next. Thank you.

Carter!!! As usual, you have the best information! You’re way ahead of me diet wise. I do IF 3 days a week via a scaled back version of bulletproof coffee. I’ve gotten over my fear of no energy, so maybe it’s time to try a fast as the next step. My husband does a version to help his blood profile.
Thank you for the links!!

Lisa I always like to read your posts and this one is no exception! Well done on your no-spending summer, decluttering and weight loss.

I'm not keen on buying and acquisition, but conversely, find decluttering quite hard! (which is one reason I don't like to buy much) So you impress me.

I had a colleague who did very well on the keto diet - I'm glad it's working for you. I resonated with your "strict rules" bent - I think I'm the same - I have done the whole30, and every year do a sort of very cheap eating challenge, but find "moderation" harder.

And hello to Carter!!

It's so great you found what works for you. For me it was looking at it as a lifestyle change. When that clicked I started seeing results. I would say I'm on track about 80% of the time now and that seems to be working out. BTW, I do intermittent one day water fasts but I'm not organized like Carter. I would like to work up to a three day fast but I'm not there yet in my head. I prepare the meals in my home for my guy and dog and that is torture when you are fasting.

Thank you for the deodorant recommendation. I'm going to be checking it out.

lisa p...thanks for the interesting discussion on the keto diet...i know really nothing about it, but will be off to goggle it after this...always interested in learning about new things.. and sort of related to carter's fasting was reading this week about the research into how when you eat impacts how your metabolism works....and going to goggle this 30 day clutter challenge....unlike LaP i probably have 90 days worth of stuff!!!!

All very interesting, like always Lisa. Have read about keto, but need to know more. Although I cannot deprive myself, all the different theories and discoveries about metabolism and health interest me a lot. I also had some waistline creep. And pounds. A year ago I got a fitbit. With all the walking and running I thought that would be the answer. No way. Nothing happened, I think I also ate more. So this spring I took an online Weight Watchers subscription. To loose 12 pounds (not US pounds). I learned very fast where my trouble lay. Measuring the olive oil with a teaspoon instead of just glug glugging it in the pan. Cheese (I am Dutch) and fullfat yoghurt etc, had to be much less. Weighing nuts and seeds instead of a handful. ( Also less bread, cake). For me it worked. Slowly yes, but I wanted that.
Thanks for being so open about your plans, ideas, struggles. You are an inspiration.
And now to take a look at my attic.

Cheering you on, Lisa. You will be thankful of every bit of deck uttering you did now before down sizing. Low carb will help a person lose weight around the middle. Remember that some carbs are needed for energy and even thinking, but we eat way too much. Low fat diets can be the opposite of low carb with lots of added starches to satisfy.
I will try the deodorant if it absolutely contains no sulphur and no part is made , including the container, in China.

Once you're fat adapted, fasting's pretty easy. Our current IF schedule is coffee around 8am, breakfast around 10, and late lunch/early dinner sometime between 2-4, depending on the rest of our day. For extended fasts, I started with a 24 hour fast, then on to 36. 3 days is really my favorite so far, because the energy really kicks in sometime in day 2 for me. How you fast really depends on your goals. If it's just weight loss, regular 36 hour fasts with bone broth will get the job done. If it's blood sugar control, a fat fast could be perfect. A 36-48 hour fat fast can also be a good way to start seeing some benefits from autophagy. If your immune system needs a total reset, a 3 day water fast followed by a probiotic/prebiotic heavy re-feed will get the job done. We'll be doing a 5 day fast in August for my husband's health, which I'm really looking forward to. Just remember that any fast longer than 36 hours needs significant attention paid to electrolytes, particularly sodium, magnesium and potassium.
