Boots and Booties! I live in nothing else all through the Seattle fall and winter seasons.

I never wear rainboots; I find them very uncomfy to wear indoors and I do not like the hassle of carrying shoes and switching into another pair. I recommend several pair of flat boots or booties that are wide enough at the calf to tuck skinny jeans or leggings into. I also wear my Aquatalia boots and booties constantly, although these are pretty pricey.

Skirts are OK as long as they are pencil or otherwise not a skirt that will blow up in the wind. I have a long tube midi skirt I am wearing today with booties and tights. I usually avoid wide hems (i.e. bootcuts) in the rain, although yesterday I wore trousers and now they need to be cleaned. )-:

I like hats, but in fall I find ear muffs more practical because while it windy and cold, it's not so cold that I need to bundle my head up and I just want to protect my ears from freezing off without my head sweating.

I have a long neck, so I usually wear a scarf when it's raining - a light weight one if it's not freezing out, or a cashmere one if it's cold.

I use an umbrella -I have one that opens AND closes with a button on the handle and it is beyond convenient because I don't need two hands free to close it when going indoors.

I find leather gloves really important - my hands get very cold and when I have to hold an umbrella and can't put them in my coat pockets its important to have wind-proof gloves.

I also have a trench coat but since I use an umbrella I don't really feel the need to wear it every time it's raining unless it's really pouring out (which actually doesn't happen THAT often in Seattle - usually it's more of a nasty, windy drizzle that blows everywhere).

It never occured to me to waterproof a hat, that's a good idea. As an aside, one thing I don't love about stiff hats in general is that they are hard to stuff into a bag or pocket once you get inside the subway or mall or whatever.
I started wearing scarves a lot in the past few years and for a short walk in a light rain I will put the scarf over my hair... a la babushka... not very fab but practical sometimes.
Oh, I love those Kamiks. I may have them mixed up with another brand but I thought they all had patterns and wide ankles. I like the styling of these much better. Love the teal.

I live in England, which is also pretty damp. So far I have collected five different trench coats and two "gear" raincoats. And several cans of waterproofing spray. The one I wear the most is a bright red lightweight thigh length trench coat, because it's light to carry around and more stylish than the gear jackets.

I don't really like using an umbrella, although I do usually have one with me for the unexpected. Lately I have taken to wearing hats with a brim, despite the fact that I kind of feel ridiculous wearing them. I bought an inexpensive tweed-y fedora earlier this year and waterproofed the heck out of it, which works pretty well, and sometimes I wear a grey flannel baker boy type cap.

My preference for boot cut jeans is my downfall. I should really invest in a pair of skinny jeans that fit me properly so that I can tuck them into my tall boots.

I have this trench http://www.eddiebauer.com/cata.....hInfo=null

It is completely waterproof and very lightweight so it can be stuffed into a backpack if needed. It's not super fashionable but very convenient. The only problem I had was with sleeve length (as you can see in the photo). The sleeves are OK in petite but then the waist is too high so I ended up with regular size and have to fold the sleeves up.

And I think this is the red trench Donna was talking about. http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/mi.....ltback=895 It is very nice and a bit warmer because of the lining.

Cheapest rainboots are at Target ($20/25 IIRC), but in the Bay Area, you have to jump on them when you see them. You may also be able to order them online; I remember a HUGE variety last year. And now you can return what doesn't work at the new Metreon Target! I found they run big; size 6 fit me, and I generally wear 6.5W or 7M.

I find umbrellas to be difficult in the wind and/or when I'm carrying stuff so I get raincoats with hoods. I have a shortish rubber one for downpours. Well, actually, I sent my coral one with DD as she headed off to college, and I kept her kid-sized rose one. For normal rain, I have a red trench with zip out lining that I bought at the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale and then later went on sale for about the same price. When I was a student many years ago, I wore something more along the lines of a water-resistant utility parka. If you anticipate internships or other occasions where you might need a smart casual or better look, investing in a trench might make sense. Otherwise, since you are a student, wearing sturdy gear-wear might make more sense.

I do black shiny Kamiks (with fleece liner socks when it gets really cold) and a fully waterproof red trench-style rain jacket for more casual outings or a black fully waterproof Michael Kors rain trench. Both have hoods which is a must for me as another stroller-pushing MOTG. If I'm kidless I carry a polka dot umbrella. I usually wear a colorful scarf of some sort.

Shiny, I'd love to see your houndstooth trench and pleather boots! What brands are they?

For Hunter rainboot alternatives I like Kamiks (http://www.zappos.com/kamik-wo.....est=pd%3A0). They are a bit less pricey and I prefer to not have the brand on the front (although I know for some that's a selling point).

What is your lifestyle? As an urban MOTG I find the trench/umbrella combo fairly useless. I can't push a stroller while carrying an umbrella, and I need more rain protection than most fashion trenches offer. I don't insist on a rain slicker, but a decent water-resistant jacket with a hood is a must. Unfortunately my perfect old one got too worn so I very reluctantly pitched it. Land's End and Eddie Bauer have some options but nothing I have fallen in love with yet. I'm hopeful for spring which seems to be the big season for purchasing rain gear (but if people have suggestions, great!)

I have rain boots with OK styling and would love to upgrade to Hunters (but I feel I'm late on the trend to be spending that much money). Rainboots are great not just for rain but other MOTG activities - pumpkin picking in a muddy field, playing in the damp sand at the park in the fall, slushy winter days. They can be hosed off which is great.

For rainy weather I tend to personally prefer skirts and dresses rather than jeans and trousers. The reasoning is that if pants get wet (even if it's just the knees, because trench and boots are covering the rest) they take longer to dry than a dress and tights. There's nothing worse than the feeling of wet, clammy denim against your skin.

For footwear I like tall boots because there's nothing worse than stepping in a puddle while wearing something like a pump or ballet flat or sneaker and then having wet feet for hours. My daughters adore colorful rain boots (with fleece liners for colder weather). I don't have those; instead I have a pair of tall boots in pleather, which are completely waterproof so I can splash away in puddles to my hearts' content.

3/4 length trench or coat is a must, because even with umbrella your thighs can still get wet. Make sure the trench is waterproof. Believe it or not, there are a lot of trenches out there that are not waterproof! Trench needn't be beige. Mine is black & white houndstooth and it goes with everything.

I also recommend a rain hat. I find such a waterproof hat to be invaluable. I wear it under the umbrella. It keeps my hair from frizzing out. It prevents my head from getting soaked during those moments when you are getting out of the car/entering buildings and opening/closing the umbrella, or you have to move your umbrella out of the way as you pass someone on the street. Also handy if someone steals your umbrella. Or if it's only a light drizzle.

Ask the Seattleites! We have the look fab in rain attire down :)

You need to waterproof your footwear with spray. Do not wear wide hemmed jeans or trousers - keep the bottoms tapered so that the hems stay dry. Wear booties or tall boots. I like to wear colour on a grey day, but that's personal.

You need a great trench coat, or coat if it's colder. Fun umbrella, scarf, a smile, and you are set.
