Do you have any Tractor Supply near you? I haven't looked at their clothes/shoes closely, but they market to farmers and people that work outside.

Waterproof Merrill hiking boots from REI have served me well but I do not usually have to muck through Kate Moss mud, mostly a bit of melting snow. I would listen to LaPed. She actually uses them.

I would be surprised if you found rain boots suitable for trail walking. My experience with Hunter and Le Chameau was that neither had good traction, especially on wet, mossy ledge. Also, blisters on the heel so never again.

Non adjustable shoes do not fit my low volume, small heeled feet well.

Duck boots were a little better but it's difficult to find ones that are sturdy and also flexible enough to be comfortable.

My first choice would be Gore Tex trail shoes or sneakers and veering off the trail wherever the height of the shoe will not be sufficient. This has worked very well for me even in snow as long as I am not the first person on the trail!

A good friend had a pair of Bogs and swore by them. I've never worn them myself. They are attractive to me because they look warm, where I always found rain boots chilly and clammy.

It’s been a truly miserable year for camping in the northeast with the constant rain and mud. (Through some stroke of luck, i ended up being away most of the summer for the first time in many years, or I would have been suffering the puddles right alongside you!)

I’ve had quite a few Bogs and Muck boots over the years. They’re a bit clunky but they do the job. I have my eye on deck boots from Xtratuf or Grundens — preferred footwear of many commercial fisherman! And I feel like the ankle height will make them more wearable for me, especially for travel when I’m loathe to pack full-height rainboots but often regret not having a truly waterproof shoe. They also have leather versions with a waterproof membrane for a more “around town” style, which would fill a serious wardrobe hole for me.

What great advice!

I’ll pass on the Hunters - I agree, Jenni, it’s probably due to Kate Moss at Glastonbury, and I’m not sure she and I have the same ideas on comfort!

I am indeed looking for something for tromping through the countryside, dog by my side.

I think I’ll order the Muck boots, in the chevron, since they are available and have free returns. If those don’t suit I’ll try some of the other options.

I knew I’d get excellent suggestions from this lovely community - I appreciate your thoughtfulness in regard to detail, quality and versatility.

I also was not pleased with my department store Hunters. Not comfy for country walks with the dog like in the pictures and the buckle broke too easily. I’ve been making do with duck boots for camping. Also not that comfy. The soles on rainboots are just too thin. If I could rally, I’d check out a feed store, but I have fears farm boots aren’t really different and that farmers are just stoic, lol

I use FitFlop wellies for my wide feet (I own both the tall & short versions in a UK6, since I'm a Uk5.5 D/E width). I like that they're cushioned, work well in the rain, are easy to wipe off, & can have shearling insoles added if need be:
https://www.fitflop.com/uk/en/.....y-boots-uk

I've not tried the ATB versions shown in that link, but I haven't had issues with the grip on my 'normal' Wonderwelly pairs in muddy fields (though admittedly I haven't tried them in mud during a torrential downpour).

You can try them on first if FitFlop has a stockist near you (sorry, I don't know where you're based?)

I found Hunters too heavy when I tried them on, too -- I couldn't really imagine walking much in them. It's also important to get the shaft height right. Some of them are too tall for my own short legs, but that would not necessarily be a problem for you.

Bog is another brand to look at. And things like LLBean duck boots, maybe?

I did not like Hunters when I tried them on…too heavy. I’ve always wanted to try Le Chameau but can’t really justify the price. Instead I ended up getting these last year:

https://www.6pm.com/p/sam-edel.....09/color/3

i found them not as heavy as the Hunters’ and I really liked the fleece lining. They seem fine so far.

I’m mostly looking for function over form advice here, although I don’t mind if they look nice.
I’m looking for a pair of rain & mud boots. These are not for city wear, but for camping and wet walks. There are some camping situations we are in where when we get heavy rain I’m finding my existing footwear is not suitable. A few times camping in Vermont this summer the mud was inches deep after heavy rain, and took a few days to dry out. I’m now on the way to another camping weekend that will start out with 2-3” of rain before clearing up. This very rainy summer and now fall have driven the need to find better rain & mud suitable footwear home for me. I have a pair of crocs (the holes make them not good for wet conditions) and a pair of waterproof garden shoes (not high enough to protect against deep mud and too low cut to keep rain from getting in). My hiking boots, while purportedly waterproof, aren’t easy to clean mud from.
I’d like to find something that is comfortable enough to walk a few miles in, has good traction and is easy to hose off. I have high arches and like a wide toe box. They don’t need to be super warm, in fact since this is a three season need I would rather they not be insulated. I’ve been looking at these, from Le Chameau, Hunter, and Merry People. I think I will have to order any candidates as I haven’t seen any of these in stores. Where else should I be looking? Farm supply stores? Thanks for any suggestions you have.
