I think it is true that the amount of clothes one purchases has gone up both in amount and frequency of shopping trips. I'm guilty of this myself. As a kid I used to shop twice a year, for fall to purchase fall and winter clothing and for spring to purchase spring and summer clothing. Now I can and do shop whenever I desire, which is more often than twice a year.
