And I participated last night by making Mochi-inspired gnocchi! Nom! I used organic russet potatoes, homegrown basil, truffle oil, and the very best Parmesan-Reggiano I could get at Whole Foods. Delicious!

Here's the recipe:

I've had this thread open on my screen for two days now, unable to find a minute to write, but I SO agree with so many comments here. And I have had the same reflections too about YLF. It has a profound effect on the psyche AGAINST mass media thinness alienation. Looking at the real world is so much more beautiful and interesting!

Whoa! I wouldn't go that far! It's a pretty L.O.N.G. leap from a leopard cardi to leopard tights worn with leopard heels!

Shabby sounds like she can give Giovannna a run for her money. I mean, after all, cobalt flats, leopard cardi, vintage bag and silver hoops sounds pretty statement-like to me.

I really do wear it intentionally. My wardrobe has lots of colors, but there is always black in the mix. Try as I might, I just can't get excited about brown - I feel so *BLAH* in it.

As long as we wear it intentionally, as Angie says. With forethought and planning.

I too would LOVE to see your interpretations, shabbychick. I'm so excited that even one person found this project-worthy! I promise that at some point I will start posting WIW's. It's going to be at least a mid-term project. I've just embarked on a year-long fitness regime and am hoping to get down at least a couple of sizes. My wardrobe will probably be in great flux (I hope so, anyway) and I won't be investing in anything longlasting. (Now that I'm writing this, I'm very accountable, everyone...but so far, one month in, it's pretty good, I think).

Anyway, your first try at reinterpretation already sounds so delicious! I hope you will be posting pics soon.

Ok ladies, bringing this topic back to the front, and I'm warning you, this post is gonna be long! So I went shopping today. Challenge: "Giovanna Battaglia" Inspired!
I was geared up and ready to follow the rules - Statement, Statement, Statement mixed with Simplicity. I wore my makeup as usual because I wear it natural like Giovanna. I tried to wear my hair down and casual, (this is hard for me because I love hairstyles) but I didn't like how frumpy I felt, so I loosely pinned it up and it looked super cute. I wore semi-big earrings (because I'm not a huge-earring fan) and my big watch, only other jewelry wedding ring. I have nothing in my closet resembling Giovanna's style, which is why I needed to shop. Well.......let's just say that once in the store it didn't take me long to realize that this was going to be an EPIC FAIL. I saw heels, BIG heels. I even tried a few on. But I got distracted. You see, a sweet little pair of cobalt blue pointy toed flats started calling my name. What do cobalt blue pointy toed flats have to do with Giovanna Battaglia? Absolutely nothing. But Shabby LOVES cobalt blue. And Shabby LOVES flats. (You see, Shabby fell a few years back while wearing wedge heels - ended up having a grand mal seizure afterward, and well, you can imagine why Giovanna heels simply don't call my name like flats do.) Anyway....then I looked for statement tops, because everything Giovanna wears is a statement something-or-other. But wouldn't you know it, just then, a leopard print cardigan started calling my name - and you all know how cardigans love to call my name! I know, I know. You're wondering "what does a leopard cardigan have to do with Giovanna?" Answer: nothing! But I came to the conclusion that since Shabby is buying and Shabby is wearing, Shabby is gonna get what Shabby wants, not what Giovanna wants. All in all it was a short lived experiment which proved what I felt all along...Giovanna owns her style and her style is NOT my style. I can appreciate her, much like I appreciate a rare black panther at the zoo. Stunning and amazing to behold, but not for me to try to catch. Not because I don't have her body or hair, but because I have my own style - and I love, REALLY LOVE my style!

Mochi - I would still love to see your interpretation of Giovanna - I'll be watching from the sidelines!

Shannon's comment about FEELING tall and slim in certain items is, in my opinion, how we make our fantasies real. When we put on clothing that makes us feel good, others may perceive us as being more attractive because we look confident and happy.

So, if dressing like your "crush", or using her as inspiration, makes you feel confident and happy, then go for it. But, I'm going to add a qualifier. I think that imitation has its limits. Copying another's look is not the same as owning that look, as Sveta so wisely puts it. If it doesn't fit your body or lifestyle, copying can sometimes make you look less confident and less attractive than if you were to develop your own style.

I agree, Mochi. You know what would be really neat? Well, for all I know, maybe it actually exists. A site where someone shows her high-fashion inspiration (or her nature inspiration, or whatever her inspiration is) and then her translation.

Actually, we do that here in our challenges. But it's a bit different if we pick our own inspirations.

Yes, of course Karen is a knockout too. My thought being that the fantasy sells to a degree, I'm sure, but also some realistic depictions of clothes, as a wide range of women wear them, would ultimately be more successful in giving us the confidence to buy. At least that's how I tend to think.

Agree with many of the thoughts on this thread, in particular the realization that many of the greatest looks on YLF have been worn by women shorter, heavier, older, etc. women without access to high designer pieces. I find it so empowering, and also ego salving, to remember that in moments of self doubt.

Will just succinctly agree that no one could have been better ambassadors for those clothes than Bei-Jing, Meredith and Phoebe. In fact, it was so shocking, almost--and then I was wondering why the industry doesn't employ more shorter, average-sized women like them. They'd absolutely sell more clothes.

Gnocchi - MMMMM!!!

That's so funny.

And Sveta, you are SO right. A lot has to do with the personality of the wearer. Ditto, Clarissa. Wrap dresses are the great case in point; curvy women look SO much better in wraps than straight types.

Shabbychick, not Shannon, but here's my guess: she will feel tall and thin in a pencil skirt with her wedge heel booties or shoes, a fab jacket that nips in at the waist, and something retro in the outfit as well as something rugged. Or a fantastic drew with a jacket.

ETA DRESS not DREW. Sheesh!!

I have a Michael Kors watch on my wish list. Right now my watch is a big BCBG, which is fine. Just not as fine as the MK

One does have to be careful about statement everything, lest the clothes end up wearing the wearer. I shall take the challenge of finding the right balance!

Shannon, you are a gem of high price. And worth every penny!

I agree with you 10,000%. There are some outfits that make me feel - well, I don't know if I feel tall and thin - but I feel GREAT, which is even better, in my books!

And Angie, I could not agree more about your gorgeous clients Bei-Jing and Karen and Meredith. So many times, I have seen the individual pieces that you've dressed them in on the models and thought, "Meh." Then I see the items on them, and WOW!! The difference is that the tall very thin model could not do the item justice.

It helps, of course, that they have YOU for their stylist! You help them cut through the chaff and find the pieces that really sing on their unique bodies. But through reading YLF I feel as if I am slowly beginning to understand the "whys" of figure and style flattery. It's still a challenge for me to put it all together for myself, but I think I'm learning.

Some of the most stylish women I have EVER seen in real life were plus-size women. I mean that. I truly believe that style has no size. It's all about attitude. And a willingness to play, I think, and a sense of humour, and, I guess, a love for it all.

Shabbychick, I'm not going as far as trying out GB's style because it's not a style that I personally could aspire to, at least not in total. But she DOES remind me of the importance of statement pieces, of luxe fabrics, of choosing at least one glorious piece per outfit. I'm already on the same page as her when it comes to simple hair and makeup. I do tend to prefer statement shoes, although mine are not and cannot be sky-high heels. I do love a statement watch and would love to get myself an understated one (if that's not an oxymoron, LOL!)

Gnocchi - very yum indeed!
And Shannon - please tell me what silhouettes make you feel tall and slim cause I'm totally stealing them!

I agree from personal experience that certain clothes do not look better on the model. I am a petite hourglass and I love fitted or fit and flare dresses and that flatter my curvy body better than it would a straight body. Its the differences in our bodies that make them special. Certain clothes look better on certain features, finding the ones that flatter us make fashion fun!

Here is my theory why so many YLFers who are not as thin and tall as models rock the same clothes better than the models in the catalog:
- when a model wears a piece of clothing for the picture it is not her choice and maybe not even her style. Very likely she acts like an animated hanger in the picture;
- when Kari or Jonesy or Suz or Shannon (I can continue the list endlessly here) put the same item on she OWNS it and owns the whole look. It becomes a part of her personality which shines through and it is much more mesmerizing than the catalog shot...
Just my 2 cents...

Totally off-topic, but I just added gnocchi to my meal plan for next week. Every time I see "Mochi" I think, "gnocchi, yum"!
