For a business site, I really appreciate clear wording about the product or services -- I don't want to work to have to figure out what the person does.

I'm torn about the "fill out this form to get a personal estimate of our services" versus, "here are the cost ranges for our packages..." I often want to know, "Is this person even in my budget ballpark" before I go to a whole lot of work filling out forms and making personal contact.

My thoughts on a blog: don't start one at all if you're not committed to keeping it up. Often, when I check a business site and see the blog or other "our current events" pages haven't been updated for a year or two, I get the impression the whole business is on the backburner.

For mobile, I really appreciate a jump button back to the top given the current trends in mobile site design

I do hate having to keep clicking, back, back, back when on a PC you can just use the dropdown menus on the top left hand size and go back several stages.

I see a lot of ugliness during my work day, so my fave sites are kind of escapist with lots of beautiful things to look at:

1.Hostess of the Humble Bungalow (recently retired teacher living inBC in a Craftsman Cottage. Gardening, Fashion, Food. Amazing photography)
2. The Royal Order of Sartorial Splendour (doesn't every girl worry about tiara hair and Ascot hats?)
3. The Vivienne Files (the best site - EVER - for capsule lovers)
4. Instyle UK

I'm a fan of Pinterest as well - fashion, beauty/hair and gardening

Oh I realise I didn't really answer the question. For a business web, I like a lot of white space. Wall to wall text is annoying. I prefer the scan column. I hate slideshows, too slow and too many clicks. I don't like clicking more than one layer down. Two is my max unless I'm really digging for info. So links to pages of links - 'landing subpages' - :p For mobile, I really appreciate a jump button back to the top given the current trends in mobile site design. Top peeve esp. for fashion house sites - slow loading visuals and video. If I have to wait, I'm moving on.

Hi everyone, thank you!

Be assured that I totally get it that content rules. And, my designers are terrific designers. And, we have a plan for the site (Suz/Lisa: Calling card-like, definitely). They just want some sense for what I like, what I am attracted to in websites. And I realized that there is a rather limited set of sites that I visit frequently -- so I wanted some ideas from all of you.

Thank you for sharing your favorite sites. They gave me more to look at and to think about.

Anna: Kingdom of Style is GREAT. And there are some specific things I can point to there that really appeal to me. Thank you!

Lisa: myfonts is really interesting. Great presentation/illustration of its content and I really love the use of maps. I'm getting an idea there.

kkards: closetfulofclothes is bookmarked for me personally now. :)

Lisap: So interesting. "About" is probably the single most important tab on my site. I'm handling it very differently from on my last site and may even call it something different to highlight it more.

Interesting that so many of us read the NYTimes (it's my daily morning ritual too): I've got to think more about what makes it so workable, beyond the content.

Suz/UmmLila: Can you send me links to your sites?

kkards/Diana: Thanks for the comments about mobile utility. That is important to us for sure.

If you think of any other specific sites, please send them along. I appreciate having more to look at and consider.

Thank you!

Agree wholeheartedly that content is queen. I think we're all pretty savvy with figuring out how to navigate a site now - it's the images and content that matter . I also am nodding with Lisa's comment about businesses being flaky and jargony with their mission statement or describing what it is they do . I did have a website ( really a blog in disguise ) that needed to be kept active and updated but it required constant time and input that I couldn't keep up with . Anyways - I read the NYT , the Business of Fashion , some publishing websites - Quill & Quire is one ....and it is the WORST . What shows up in the weekly email update doesn't match the content on the site . I am also constantly looking up retail and service websites for my job, and find it supremely frustrating when contact tabs or "about us" tabs don't disclose the owners' name/s . A business shouldn't be a secret entity if you want to engage with customers .

I am with Diana in finding it frustrating to have to download an app to look at a site properly, or when its mobile version doesn't function as well, or when it has hideous, noisy, intrusive advertising. I also hate slide shows or other mechanisms by which to add more advertising or slow down the viewing of a particular article.

I am otherwise mostly interested in content rather than design.

Having said that, one website I particularly like is myfonts. It is attractive, functional and has a good mix of products and content. Oddly, the USCIS.gov website, which I used to hate, has gotten better in terms of organization, presentation and search ability of a lot of content.

For my own personal gratification I am fishing through news and fashion sites, most of which I do not find to be particularly attractive.

For work purposes I am often looking at business sites. My pet peeve with business sites is that some organizations (mostly in the advertising and marketing industry but also in finance) refuse to have a page that says what their business IS, or that is so jargon-heavy no one can understand it -- e.g. help clients address the digital transformation needs created by accelerating technology advances, the changing competitive landscape and the rise of the empowered consumer.

And I am with Suz -- my site is more of a calling card. I don't update it and do more with Facebook and LinkedIn in terms of updating. So perhaps you might be best with a well designed first page and then really good representation on social media.

Vivian, is your site more or less like a calling card? That is what mine is...I do have a blog that I hardly ever use any more but could revive if desired. But oftentimes consultant-type people, like artists and some psychologists, don't need a super active site or a commercial site -- they just need a place to showcase their work so people who might hire them can get a sense of them.

If that is the type of site you need, you can look at writers' sites, artists' sites, designers' sites -- and the sites of other people who do the kind of work you do. A site that does a lot of other stuff is probably going to be overkill. Simpler is best.

Mine are all over the place. I don't care anything much about layout, ease of use, readability. I'm determined and will put up with most anything to get what I want.

I've been, well, outraged by the kind of news coverage that has an agenda. Now that I am old I agree with what William Buckley said of himself after he got old: facts were of the most interest. So I don't watch tv nor read much in newspapers. Won't listen to talk radio. I haunt The Conservative Treehouse. Caught my attention when they had an admin and a squad of volunteers who investigated the coverage given to George Zimmerman/Trayvon Martin case. I really admire and rely on their dedication. I don't comment there.

I also read Takimag because I like the quality of the writing. I think Kathy Shaidle's a hoot and like to read Theodore Dalrymple (pen name, I think), who I think was a prison doctor/psychiatrist. There's mostly a lot of rants here. And that's the opposite of the Treehouse.

For more rants, I like Unz (the Unz review): billed as an alternative media selection: a collection of interesting, important and controversial perspectives largely excluded from the American mainstream media.
These are all over the place and quite a few are really out there. I like how focused they are in their wild-eyed speculation about history, current, modern and ancient. For all the above sites, I read the comments to the articles. I often find interesting links that way. They wouldn't be the same for me if they were straight thinkpieces and had
no audience response, challenge, interaction with the authors and ideas.

I read the Dilbert blog: Scott Adams. Just a whole bunch of fun to me. I like to hear the ideas people have about what is behind the curtain. There seem to regularly be over 3000 comments attached to each of his posts and I don't read those.

Style, I've cut back a lot on the sites I would read (besides here, of course). I like Lisa Armstrong, who is the fashion editor of the Telegraph. So I'll read a fair number of articles there throughout the month. I've run into the paywall/limits, though. I obviously don't like it enough to pay. I just stopped opening articles entirely for a month, out of cussedness. After I found out to open a private tab in my browser but keep my bookmarks, now I read whatever I want. I don't read the comments there, as they're mostly idle jeering.

I really like the blog of a former? YLF member who's become a stylist/shopper. Rachel Klewicki. I like how she puts her own outfits together and I relate to how she explains concepts. That's really important to me. I read for ideas. And even the visuals I like are because it's an idea that hadn't occurred to me yet.

I use Pinterest a lot. Won't start my own board. Too much of a nuisance. But I keep it as an easy search tab and when I want to see how someone styled an item or color, I open it.

On the other hand, I tend to avoid Polyvore like the plague. I can't relate to a collage of clothing that is usually out of scale and quite obviously cannot show any movement.

ETA: I also like Joe Baltake's blog The Passionate Moviegoer. I remember when he was the Phila Daily News critic and what I always liked about him, even if I didn't agree, was exactly his passion. He writes now, sporadically about favorite neglected films and actors. It's typographically hard to read but I persist because it's so absorbing to me.

And YouTube when I feel like going down the rabbit hole hearing different musical versions of something. I find it really easy to use because the site picks up on that and suggests alternative artists or songs. Though they also suggest based on what I've listened to before and I already know that. :D

I agree content is #1. But design determines whether I will visit a site regularly and "hang out" there so to speak. I can't deal with sites that have annoying pop ups, broken scripts, or really pushy ads. (Ad blockers can fix some but not all of these problems however.)

More and more, mobile functionality is becoming important to me as well. Specifically I appreciate when a site works well ON THE BROWSER on my phone. It annoys me to have to download an app for every site and I refuse to do it. I just want to use the browser on my phone and I want the site to have all or most of the functionality it has on the computer.

YLF and ravelry both have "mobile views" on the phone browser which work well, plus they both allow switching to the desktop view if necessary. This to me is an ideal way to approach this issue.

kkards, Xtabay: me too! I check out the NYTimes regularly. I've never paid much attention to the web design, although I'm sure I'd notice if the site was difficult to navigate.

Viva, I would say that 98% of the reason I visit a website repeatedly is because I enjoy the content. Design has to be good enough not to be noticed, but beyond that it doesn't really matter. What I mean is, if the design is so poor that it's distracting, or the navigation is confusing, it would deter me -- but a page with a super-cool look and feel is no more likely to make me revisit than an average but perfectly functional one. It's the content that counts. :-)

By the way, I don't visit any other fashion/beauty/style sites besides YLF. I don't know if this matters for your informal survey. What kind of web page do you have?

ETA the content HAS to be well-written. :-)

If I'm not on YLF (heart), then I'm usually at the NYTimes. Love their organization and their coverage in general. Like YLF, it feeds my soul!

houzz...because it's...well decorating porn....and I'm addicated. anyway, its easy to search, has great ability to save things you like, and has pretty nice interactive features.

closetfulofclothes --because its well organized, colorful, and has just the right balance of words and pictures (yes I treat it like its a magazine)

NYTimes ---I prefer the app vs the website......

and that brings me to my personal pet peeve....I browse thru sites via my ipad and iphone a lot....and I hate sites that are not mobile friendly.

It's all helpful, Lisap -- blogs and sites. And I really appreciate hearing what you have to say, Diana.

Yes, I am doing a little background work for my site redesign. The design duo has asked for a few of "my favorite sites" and I realize that I am not passionate about many sites when it comes to design (YLF aside, of course!) -- so I wanted to hear some other people talk about what turns them on, webwise. I'll take whatever you have to offer.

Thank you!

PS. Ah, Goop. Gwyneth Paltrow is like cobalt to me.

Hmmm. I read a ton of blogs, but they are all design, food and fashion related. I assume you're considering this in relation to your own site?

I have to admit I like Goop for how it is organized. My one quibble with it thought is that the posts aren't dated - so when you read a fashion post that was linked on line somewhere else (like on Facebook), oftentimes they are a few months old, which isn't instantly apparent.

Oh - I just realized that I am thinking blogs, and you are looking at websites. Goop is one of the only actual sites I read regularly. The rest of my reading is in blog format. Different animal.

Aside from YLF? My favorite website is Ravelry, which is a knitting database/store, forum, pattern library, and knitting "notebook". It's basically a gigantic (over 6 million members I think) social media/database site for knitters. Basically, it links patterns, yarns, and individual projects made from a pattern or yarn. For example I'd make an entry for a sweater I knit, with my own photos and notes, and link it to the pattern and the yarn I used. When someone is searching for a particular pattern or yarn, they'd be able to see all the projects that people have made with that pattern or yarn.

There's also a huge and incredibly well-designed forum with many boards ranging from knitting help to totally unrelated things. (Each board has its own moderators and rules although of course there are a few site rules as well.) It's not nearly so friendly and communal as YLF but then again it's like 1000 times larger so you wouldn't expect that.

I think the biggest thing is that one of the founders, Casey, wrote the code for the site entirely from the bottom up, so it's incredibly responsive, perfectly tailored to the application, and extremely well-designed overall. It's probably the most well-designed site I've ever seen (sorry Greg) and runs incredibly smoothly, which is amazing considering the number of users and pages on the site. What amazes me even more is that Casey wrote the code single-handedly and in a relatively short amount of time. (I think he has a helper now but in the beginning it was just him.)

Unfortunately I think you need a login to see most of the site, but there is a tour with a video here:
http://www.ravelry.com/tour/getting-started

Here is a public pattern page (designers who sell on Ravelry can choose to make their pages public so non-members can also purchase patterns):
http://www.ravelry.com/pattern.....ms-worsted
