Nancy, you are dead right. My hardest clients to dress are apple shaped plus size petites. They need the width but not the length. And the higher you go in size, the longer the lengths and sleeve lengths are on the garments. It is extremely hard finding items that fit in 14P, 16P, 18P and 20P. Bless retailers like Talbots for making them though.

Angie, I guess your and your tall clients' problems are the other side of the coin of mine, where I can't seem to find above a size in petite jeans (Gap being one example for many of their jeans, going only up to 30 where a regular inseam goes at least to 33). It's like you can't weigh more than a certain amount if you're short???

Aida, I haven't found knee-breaks to move up and down too badly with the sizes.

Linda, exactly.

Laura, only nearby sizes and that usually happens with budget wear. It's less expensive to produce an item when the lengths are not graded.

I noticed this on these BR jeans. I ordered two sizes to try and was tempted to go with the bigger size but the length was too long. The smaller ones still fit nicely and the length was perfect so they were the ones I kept.

It seems to depend on the brand. Some brands keep the same inseam for all sizes (or at least nearby sizes) and some grade inseam by size as well as width.

Since pants are usually 1-2" too long for me I never noticed the length changes! I actually bought two petite jeans this year and they are a LOT shorter than the regulars holy moly! Rises are a little too short but it was getting impossible to find something that would otherwise fit without needing loads of alterations (shorten, waist darts, knee break raise, and some shape slimming on some *sigh*). Do the knee breaks move up too with smaller sizes? That's my biggest issue, too low in regulars.

EDIT: Hmm now that I think about it more pants lengths fit better at my current size. I'd just assumed it was because of all the cropped lengths around! Must also be the small size. (Sorry to hijack your thread, Brie!)

Absolutely, Aida. That's why I lament the lengths of things and wearing a size 0 when I am 5ft 6. The size 4 or 6 is often the length I want, but does not fit. A 0P fits my body well in the width - but is a disaster in the length.

We try to size up with my tall clients to get more length too. Pattern grading sizes increases with width AND length.

Angie, with pants too? If so the difference must be slight, I've never noticed it. Definitely noticed with other bottoms (shorts, skirts, dresses, and sometimes trousers) just not so much with jeans.

Actually, there IS a length difference with sizes. The smaller the size, the shorter the length and sleeve length.

Thanks Aida and ALeigh -- that's very helpful.

I guess I was used to shopping for kids clothing where the pants get longer the higher the size.

Nope they're typically the same. Exception is if you go from a regular 12 to a petite 12 for example. Petite are designed with a similar width but shorter length, and anyone under 5"2 wish is petite regardless of actual shape

Size indicates rather generally a bigger waist, sometimes also thigh, leg or hipline but that also varies between types and brands just as much.

Not really. They tend to be the same length regardless of size, unlike how tops will often be shorter/longer as you size down/up.

If you go down a size in jeans will they be shorter?

(or conversely if you go up a size are they longer?)

I see jeans listed as "x inches inseam" and don't know if that's for all of them or just an example. If they do vary by size, any idea how much they lengthen for each increase in waist size?

Thanks.
